First and foremost let's get the obligatory excuses out of the way.
We were down three players today (Sima, Lovett and Alibegovic).
L.I.U. was playing down the block from their campus cheered on by a raucous home crowd of 200 fans.
The beds at the downtown Brooklyn Marriott made our players backs stiff. Note: when your basketball program is in the crapper reserving a dozen rooms with meals 12 miles from your campus is insulting to donors and fans who have to work for a living. Charter a fcking bus, especially if you don't plan to show up for the game mentally.
Now to the game. Let me start off with the player of the game Darien Williams. Darien provided all the offense never provided by Yankuba Sima. Problem is he is not a center. That rat Fink L.I.U player had his way with our front court like Max Cady over pubescent Danielle in Cape Fear. Needless to say the fast fading Yakwe was not in his league and never will be as Fink had both an inside and outside game. Yet another example of our team failing to stop the one player that should have been a main focus of the defense.
Did I say defense? We all know Mussini, Ellison, Amhed provide just token pressure on their player and Shamorie's defense has yet to catch up with his offense but Gosh Darn it how is it possible that 6'11, 145 pound Owens is the only player today that decided to play some defense. Of course most of the blame likely falls on this inexperienced and seemingly over their heads basketball staff who have yet to show they have a tactical defensive scheme in their repertoire of their predictable "run, pass and shoot the three" game. I shudder to think what the better coached guards on Butler, Xavier, Villanova, Creighton, dtc,, will do with Ellison and Mussini in the lineup at the same time. It is like deja vu all over again to last year's defenseless backcourt. L.I.U. collected the bulk of the fouls early and a more experienced coach would have exploited that advantage by going inside more but what we saw instead was Bashir "gonna get my points" Amhed driving out of control and even when fouled only is capable of hitting half his attempts which leads me the the wild man Malik Ellison who, managing to get fouled, hits a big fat ZERO % from the line. Bashir and Ellison left 7 points on the line. Basically, that was the game. Both players need to be reigned in and I'm not sure this staff is capable of doing that. Why haven't they utilized Darien to date?
Bench coaching? Perri obviously took game preparation seriously and Mullin looked pale and embarrassed at the end of the game. He shook hands but was less than gracious as usual, not saying a word to any of the opposing players or coaches. Hey Coach, grow a pair and save the anger for your team in the locker room. Steve Lavin was just as bone headed as a coach but was always gracious in defeat. From the looks of this team, you better tone down the sore loser attitude and focus on your players and their weaknesses. The new AD looked none too happy today. Time for a little more introspection for our $2 million rookie coach. Nice pay for a trainee. Better start reading "Coaching for Dummies". The $10 investment may work wonders.
