Lavin parting ways with St.John's

I don't know... Just watched the postgame interview from the tourney again. I almost get the feeling that Lavin knew this was his last game too...don't know if his heart was into it anymore... i feel that the split was definitely mutual. Good luck Lav... Thanks for making us relevant again.

I totally disagree. I think he loved it here but wasn't willing to take a pay cut.

I know a lot of you are jumping for joy. I'm approaching this with apprehension.

I'm not convinced this was the best move for the program unless they truly get that homerun hire we were promised over 10 years ago. We need a proven winner but that costs money!

If you knew me you'd know i am one of his biggest supporters and most certainly am not jumping for joy. Honestly until it comes from Lavins mouth or from the university, anything is speculative about what really went on behind closed doors.
In my opinion i feel he didn't feel appreciated here for some time now and was ready to move on.

That could very well be part of it.

I still think there were some type of negotiations going on and SJU simply lowballed him. The Yankees did the same thing to Joe Torre when they were done with him and both parties decided to part ways then, too. The Yankees couldn't just flat out fire Torre.

SJU knew they couldn't just fire Lavin IMO so they made him feel completely unwanted knowing he'd say thanks but no thanks.

Water under the bridge now.

will be of paramount importance for the next coach to establish strong relations with the NYC area HS programs.

for us to succeed, that pipeline must be open, which is why i think we need to get a NY guy.

ex-coach Lavin did not know where half of the NYC HS power programs were, nor did he care to know.
NYC kids are notan absolute necessit...Kinda overrated...Most can't shoot

What? Jermaine Lawrence, Jon Severe, Isaiah Whitehead all overrated?

Lawrence did nothing last year when he wa healthy at Cicncy and did nothing at Manhattan this year. Last I heard after a DNP Shis coach says it was up to Lawrence if he plays and how much and it didn't have anything to do with his health.

Severe did not do well this year after being suspended and then leaving the team for awhile. Many members on this Board would have been all over him with the shooting percent he had last year .

To be fair he did recruit Lawrence out of high school and when he left Cincy and he did recruit Whitehead.,I think one of the problems the CTK coach had with Lavin as he didn't go after Severe.

Impound have liked, him to have gone ahead after Giovan from Wings Academy but it look like he had his heart set on GTown from the start.

Raw, do you think his not feeling appreciated caused lack of performance the last couple of years? I was always bothered by the beating he took on the boards up until this year. I would have been happy had he protected his job by doing whats expected of all coaches at his level. How could the brass have not noticed the drop off in recruiting and the situation in which it left the team? I am not pressing you for an answer, just wondering out loud why he let up. It really is to bad.

A variation on "Constructive dismissal"?

You can believe it if it comes out of Lavin's mouth but I have enough cases of snake oil piled up in my basement not to.

If you think a coach is that sensitive that coach should work in some little cubby whole with no public contact.

I hope you realize I was being sarcastic.

Newsday headline by Greg Logan article

"Steve Lavin parts ways with St. John's"

Almost the verbatim title of this thread. I know there are but so many ways to say he was fired, but come on, at least a little originality.

@NYPost_Braziller: One NYC high school coach on Steve Lavin: "The new guy will already have done a better job the minute he steps into a HS gym".

Telling words
Never wanted him here. Glad to see him leave. Goodbye and good luck, Coach
Looking forward to seeing you on ESPN next season

probably the ctk coach

Seriously, Zach seems to have a pretty minute circle of sources.

Yeah, with his biggest one being Redmen.com!

I like Zach I think he does a good job, but maybe he is pissed that ex SJU coach Lavin and his minions have been providing him with completely erroneous info RE: the contract extension that never happened for the last two years.....

Principles before personalities, there is no excuse for such low life comments from some class less coach to be tweeted. This h.s. Coach is around people's kids! Zach should have some class, don't pile on a guy who was just let go. Either Zach is a professional or he is not!!

There are very few professionals left in journalism, especially sports, too many jobs none of which pay enough.

Sorry I didn't pick it up. It was late after a very long day.

I assumed Redken's response was a sarcastic one as only Whitehead qualifies as someone with potential star power -- and he has already proven that he may not be as good as he thinks

Reporters don't pick the headlines for their stories. Probably a copy editor.

Extremely please that we are moving in another direction. I wish Steve Lavin the best. It's not lost on me that he is a decent person. I also think, under Lavin, we were pulled out of the depths of irrelevance. It undoubtedly would have been safer to stick with him, so I do give SJU credit for moving on.

Now comes the most crucial decision. It will be interesting to see if we are still willing to pony up the big salary. I am ready to get behind our next coach, albeit nervous about who we will choose.

Just for fun, here is my order of preference.........

1. Archie Miller
2. Bobby Hurley
3. Michael White
4 .Dan Hurley
5. Andrew Toole
6. Tommy Amaker
7. Tim Cluess

P.S......not in favor of Masiello, Mullin or Jackson

Michael White is an interesting choice. Young. Tremendous success as LA Tech. Southerner through and through. Jesuit HS grad.

Understand completely. As noted in another thread, yesterday was a blur -- not a single minute of work got done; all I did was constantly read (and occasionally write) posts for something like 15 hours straight. My brain was shot by the time I went to bed.
