Lavin parting ways with St.John's

@NYPost_Braziller: One NYC high school coach on Steve Lavin: "The new guy will already have done a better job the minute he steps into a HS gym".

Telling words
Never wanted him here. Glad to see him leave. Goodbye and good luck, Coach
Looking forward to seeing you on ESPN next season

probably the ctk coach

Seriously, Zach seems to have a pretty minute circle of sources.

Yeah, with his biggest one being Redmen.com!

somewhat surprisingly every one of my friends who doesn't post here but are big hoops fans that has called me or texted me today is pretty pissed right now

You need friends who know more about basketball. Or drink less. Or both.
Or maybe you should wait until you see who the next hire is.

They will be ripping the new guy soon enough

Gee, I wonder who Zach ran to for that quote. Classy and Classier hooking up again to pile it on a guy that just lost his job.

Not to be cruel, but it seems clear that Zach, whom I know some of you count as a friend, is a douchebag. In my mind that makes him about the same as 80% of white males which is sad but true and makes it less of an insult. FWIW I am working on my first book, Douchebag America: An Unofficial Sequel to Charles P Pierce's Idiot America. It'll look at how not EVERY problem in American ignorance can be attributed to religion and conservatism. ;)

This is ridiculous.

I don't think he is a douche I think he dislikes Lavin and has had it out for him. It's pathetic and sad but he's a decent guy away from talking about Lavin IMO

will be of paramount importance for the next coach to establish strong relations with the NYC area HS programs.

for us to succeed, that pipeline must be open, which is why i think we need to get a NY guy.

ex-coach Lavin did not know where half of the NYC HS power programs were, nor did he care to know.
NYC kids are notan absolute necessit...Kinda overrated...Most can't shoot

Why, are they afraid St J's will finally be able to beat their favorite teams? For those bitching about the so called negative posters, you guys are now the negative posters. Rebuild job with or without Lavin for next year but at least now future has chance to be very bright. Best of times in past 23 years is the time period where we had no coach although at the time the FF hire had me excited. Hopefully they make a good hire but if not you keep trying until you get it right. No need to settle for mediocrity, if you don't dare to be great you never will.

Also, everyone who is saying we are going to struggle next season needs to realize we were rebuilding no matter who was coaching.

Lavin at least had a chance to bring in some of the recruits he was after...new coach, unless a home run, has little chance...

I like Zach I think he does a good job, but maybe he is pissed that ex SJU coach Lavin and his minions have been providing him with completely erroneous info RE: the contract extension that never happened for the last two years.....

Principles before personalities, there is no excuse for such low life comments from some class less coach to be tweeted. This h.s. Coach is around people's kids! Zach should have some class, don't pile on a guy who was just let go. Either Zach is a professional or he is not!!

LMF, a lot of what you say is correct. I just don't trust the admin to understand what Car & Driver recommends. PS Rohrssen makes more than any STJ AC so I think we should give a rest to the entire coaching staff overpaid POV. If the school goes big they'll be paying HC's and AC's the same or more than they are now. If not this is going to be lengthy and painful.

As a matter of history, I completely appreciate where you are coming from.

However, I think there is a good chance it will work out well this time. No promises, of course.

Because? Please change think to hope. If chainsaw bobby actually thinks $2 mill is too much for a college basketball coach the program is effed to mid majordom, if they weren't there already.
Mr.A, for sure it's the money? If coach Lavin had brought in 2 solid players last year and had 3 more locked up for next, would a contract been offered? I think it's Lavin's doing that we must now look for a new coach. Why coach Lavin did you not continue to bring in players that belong here? Coach himself opened the exit door. Based on performance had he earned a big commitment.

What? Jermaine Lawrence, Jon Severe, Isaiah Whitehead all overrated?

I don't know... Just watched the postgame interview from the tourney again. I almost get the feeling that Lavin knew this was his last game too...don't know if his heart was into it anymore... i feel that the split was definitely mutual. Good luck Lav... Thanks for making us relevant again.

Why are you so obsessed with HS programs and you said powerhouses? How many nyc kids are top 50 in 2016? Top 75? There are twice that amount out of NC, and relying on NYC kids to build a program is a recipe for disaster. You have to get the best kids wherever they are from!!

I totally disagree. I think he loved it here but wasn't willing to take a pay cut.

I know a lot of you are jumping for joy. I'm approaching this with apprehension.

I'm not convinced this was the best move for the program unless they truly get that homerun hire we were promised over 10 years ago. We need a proven winner but that costs money!

There were also reports that he approached media outlets looking to see if he could get back in TV earlier this week. Maybe he realized he could get paid a similar amount to do a much less stressful job.

Or he realized that they were going to offer him an extension for less money. I think SJU didn't like the results for the money being spent, and they may have had a legitimate point. I like Lavin a lot BUT our postseason record and roster issues have been troublesome.
