Lavin parting ways with St.John's

Telling-

@NYPost_Brazille: Was told new #sjubb coach would be given great opportunity to get involved with top city players Rawle Alkins of Christ the King.

So much for the narrative that Alkins told Lavin he'd never go to SJU

Some of you need to calm down.

The end of the Lavin era is not exactly as though we fired Tom Izzo. Surely even the most irrational Lavin pom-pom boys see that, just as even the most passionate Lavin-haters have some appreciation for the improvement in his tenure compared to Norm.

However, at the end of the day we are not talking about finding a replacement for a legendary coach. Not only that, there are a number of interesting options (in a few different categories) out there, every one of which is a good bet to do as well or better than the coach who just left the building.

It's also worth noting that there may be more budget than you realize. Not only is the school shedding Lavin's bloated salary, it is shedding the bloated salaries of his bench. That is money that could potentially be put towards a new contract.

And clearly it hasn't occurred to some of you that if the school made a lowball offer to Lavin (which I'm not saying it did), then it was intended to be an offer he would refuse so that both sides could move on with a little more grace than a "you're fired."

At the moment the site reminds me of a bunch of rubberneckers looking at a crash on the side of the road. OK, the 2008 Impala has been totaled. Your time would be better spent looking at Consumer Reports and Car & Driver and trying to pick out a new model with better reliability, mileage, and curb appeal.

One thing is for sure...this week has been the least productive work week of my life. I barely did anything while reading about this saga...Luckily I make a lot less than Steve and have great job security!

More importantly , who are you betting tonight?

I have a continuing parlay from last night, need Zags and Utah straight up..couldn't pass up betting against ratface. what about you?

It was always between the coaches.

I need Oklahoma i'm in a bracket type pool vs the spread and I have Oklahoma. Like the Zags too think it's end of line for Ucla, and going to take Ratface tonight.

Arbitello told Lavin that Alkins will never go to SJU. Don't worry. When the next coach fails to give Arbitello a spot, it'll be right back to the same thing.

LMF, a lot of what you say is correct. I just don't trust the admin to understand what Car & Driver recommends. PS Rohrssen makes more than any STJ AC so I think we should give a rest to the entire coaching staff overpaid POV. If the school goes big they'll be paying HC's and AC's the same or more than they are now. If not this is going to be lengthy and painful.

Yeah, cuz if Zach reported it, it must be true!

It would be great if the new coach gets us back in the mix for some NYC/NJ kids. I'm glad Lavin showed that we could recruit nationally, but I cannot recall a St. John's team like the one we just had -- that didn't have one local impact player.

I can't keep up with the thread but I hope a bunch of you apologized to McGoogle, unbelievable that some people were attacking him when he was just trying to relay valid info on a message board. Other rumors that turned out to be incorrect were started by posters that have been here longer and nobody attacked them. I'm not saying the other posters should have been attacked instead of having their butts kissed, I am just surprised how many people just attacked right away when it seemed to me like he was trying to do us a favor and post valid info.

The next coach needs to be Danny Hurley.

He is a great coach and would make St. John's a perennial tournament team within a year.

He turned Wagner and Rhode Island around dramatically fast.

From 13 to 25 wins at Wagner between years 1 and 2
From 8 to 14 to 23 wins at Rhode Island in his first three years.

Lavin's win totals improved each year but only in small increments. It'd be a mistake to miss on him

not an attack by any means. it's the language of how he posted it as well as the Monasch thread. Nobody is doing us a favor by feeding us a rumor that is stated like a fact.

Regrettable. Now we are looking at last place in the conference next year. How long before it's enjoyable and exciting again?
