Lavin or his agent?

FWIW that doesn't even mean Lavin was looking for a raise. Some were posting the school wanted to cut his salary. That is something no one would accept.

Those of us on the board who are NYU refugees are not unfamiliar with this kind of suffering. The next script is not the hiring of the next coach but the AD script. If cost-cutting is the true agenda you tie Monasch's hands in terms of salary availability for the next hire and then keep him around as a scapegoat as hoops slowly withers away and you fire him and the Lavin successor in the next downsizing purge. Been there, done that, call it dejaNYU.

NYC? Regardless of where they come from, how about some solid ballplayers who know basketball basics. OK, then maybe slip a super star or two into the mix.

Party is BACK ON at Desco's!! And it's a Friday so we can get all sorts of rowdy and weird

Tap the kegs, light the cigars ... it is a new day.

I don't hate Lavin so much that I don't appreciate the progress he made, he took steps forward from where we were in 2010. But this is a good thing for fans of St Johns hoops. We will be even better in the future.

Or dim the lights and put on black.

The Devil you know etc. He was far from perfect but I think he achieved more than he gets credit for. I don't see it as a good thing. He should have been kept on a short leash and his staff should have shaken up for some solid X & O guys. I get the feeling the next several years will be barren and we may regret this.

Granted we'll likely never know what he was asking for and what the school was offering, but all along I felt that the school was willing to extend him on terms that they deemed reasonable. I don't think this was as much about cutting costs as it was about return on investment.

Let's see who the school hires before we decide if this is a bad decision. We were likely in for a rebuild with Lavin. I think Danny Hurley could get this done just as quickly. If we don't get him, I will start to get concerned.

It's hardly rebuilding with Jordan, Diaollo, Sampson, Doughty, Papa, and the other recruits lavin would have secured...would have been another year iwth a run at the tourny, and who knows what that parlay's into...X's and O's don't matter in this day and age, it's about getting talent. that's all that matter, the better players in the games, and now we lost someone who could have secured that talent...i was really looking forward to landing diallo and watching sampson...

all you crybaby fans with unreasonable expectations will be wishing this never happened over the next 4-5 years

No, they won't.... They'll just start crying again. I'll give some of 'em two years before they start soiling their diapers, if things aren't going the way THEY expect it to be.

Maybe he didn't want to be on a short leash and have his staff shaken up.

Need a coach with NY ties = Let the hangers on from the past back in the program. Free seats behind the bench for all the old cronies.

Who fired him, Monasch or Gempesaw?

What about the Assistant Coaches? New HC will clean house?

What about Monasch? How did he escape?

Maybe I should start a new thread on what the over/under will be in years before the usual negative posters start all over again.

Jeff Goodman of ESPN said "there was 'not alot of stability' and 'too many issues' under coach Steve Lavin"

too many issues is one thing we can all agree on. we couldn't get an ounce of good news without some crap following it. how much of that falls on Lav is anyone's guess but he had five years

Although, I think X's and O's tend to be overplayed (though, it matters, but there aren't many, masterful tactician's walking around) by a several folks.... I basically agree with your post, Tx.

Attractive job but the AD takes the luster off the shine.

Coaches aren't blind to how poorly this was handled.

"Mutual agreement" and "he asked for too much money" are simply to soothe the media/writers.

Pres. G isn't in the clear because our reputation is not a good one.

That being said, who wants to go to Maui in a few months?! :p
