Lavin parting ways with St.John's

Let's see who the school hires before we decide if this is a bad decision. We were likely in for a rebuild with Lavin. I think Danny Hurley could get this done just as quickly. If we don't get him, I will start to get concerned.

It's hardly rebuilding with Jordan, Diaollo, Sampson, Doughty, Papa, and the other recruits lavin would have secured...would have been another year iwth a run at the tourny, and who knows what that parlay's into...X's and O's don't matter in this day and age, it's about getting talent. that's all that matter, the better players in the games, and now we lost someone who could have secured that talent...i was really looking forward to landing diallo and watching sampson...

all you crybaby fans with unreasonable expectations will be wishing this never happened over the next 4-5 years

Feels like Fran firing to me. Except next coach (Massiello) does not have Bootsy, Barkley, Postell, Grant and Ron Ron waiting for him.

Thank you SL for putting us on the map again. Good guy, good recruiter but not the right man for the job anymore. Paultz what is step 2 and no more cryptic messages!!

No, just referring to hiring new coach. In my opinion they will act quickly, but I have no clue who main targets are,

we went from two years of "could" and "if" from people like you...and now its "would have"...he would have done this and would have done that..yada yada yada. we will have now have a hard worker who can bring stability here

This is yet another sad day in SJU history. We fire a coach who brought us to two NCAA appearances, one NIT appearance, two consecutive 20 win seasons in a row. And for what reason? We will never know. There can be all kinds of speculation and we will get the usual suspects with all their un-named sources.

I've been a season ticket holder since Lavin was hired. That was the reason I became one. The last five seasons have had their ups and downs, but I really enjoyed going to as many games as I did and seeing as many players as I did.

Now, I have to seriously reconsider whether to spend $1200 now for a three year re-building program.

Get used to having a roster of second-tier local kids.

will be of paramount importance for the next coach to establish strong relations with the NYC area HS programs.

for us to succeed, that pipeline must be open, which is why i think we need to get a NY guy.

ex-coach Lavin did not know where half of the NYC HS power programs were, nor did he care to know.

Yeah, I was watching the Kentucky game last night and thinking "Why would Diallo go to a b-rate program like this when he could be coached by Lavin?'

Get real. We were looking at a complete rebuild next year and I suspect that played a major role in Lavin's ouster.

Why do you assume this was a firing and not Lavin looking for an unreasonable extension?

No doubt neither do they. Everyone get ready for another endless s--tload of threads, posts, and rumors.

Exactly, do that well and the program might be as good as Seton Hall!

Let's hope they don't screw this up. There are a lot of programs that can out bid us on the hot choices (Alabama, Texas and Maybe DePaul).

Yeah, good luck with that. Sounds like it was partly a cost cutting measure which, if that's the case, is a pretty depressing indicator for the future.

This may not end well, if that was partly the case.

Or maybe Lavin wanted more than the 1.8 mil he is getting and they wanted more results for that money. Again, who knows, all conjecture at this point. Until we see who they bring in and how much they pay him we are only guessing.

That's a nice sentiment. However, I have been a season ticket holder going back to Louie. In all of that time, Lavin was the first coach who made me seriously consider giving up my tickets.

You will have something of a rebuild for a year or two now. However, you were going to have that anyway. With any luck, you will get a chance to watch better basketball now. You might find that better basketball played by a less "athletic" group of players wins just as many games and is a whole lot better to watch.

For those who really need to ask, step 2 is signing the next coach. IMO the school got step 1 exactly right. I certainly hope they go 2 for 2.

So you never thought of giving up your tickets during the 7 years of Norm Roberts. In my view Lavin came into a program that had nothing, he started rebuilding, fought with cancer, came back and because of some disqualifications had a thin squad this year. St Johns is not exactly Utopia for the high school basketball stars. We are lucky when they choose to come here especially the way this program has been run. I dont think our President saw enough or understood enough to make this change. I am sorry Lavin is leaving. I hope that the next coach does well. But I do believe they should have given him an extension. But this is life as a St Johns fan, almost like being a Met fan.
