Lavin loves where St. John's is going

IF they somewhow got a winning record, their chances for the NIT are slim and would depend on who doesn't make the NCAAs from the small conferences.

As SJU fans, you want every single regular season champion to make the NCAA tourney. Every one that doesn't gets an automatic bid to the NIT.

i really dislike this Match UP Zone.. in 2 seasons, with different players, it gives up way too many easy 3's to opponents!  And, I don't believe it's just a case of having only 6 players...Last year's team was awful defending the 3 as well. Remember the Gonzaga game and others?

We were very fortunate ND shot only 4 for 31 from treyland.. If they hit their normal 30-35 %, we lose the game..And, strictly from a analysis point of view, the ND kid got way too good a look on the game ending miss and, he's not even their best 3 shooter.. Even Brey said they needed to hit more 3's than they did and usually do..Giving up 31 3's is not necessarily a good thing.

In all the articles I read today, the kids and Brey all said the defence of the three was the difference maker. They said they have never seen St. John's play defence like they did yesterday.

On another note, I still going to buy my season's tickets every year but I'm going to give them all away. I went to Florida last week and missed all three games and we won all three!!!! I must be bad luck for the team!!

As a season ticket holder, I have kept the faith.
Yesterday was just an awesome game to be at
This article is the icing on the cake!

The NIT folks will probably do everything possible to get us in. If we have 8 conference wins and get another 2 in the BET I think they will make a slot for us no matter what.

Who do you think they want at MSG in the quarterfinals, McNeese St. or St. John's?

Agree totally. Let's just win our next game vs Pitt. The rest will take care of itself.

With a true shot blocking big in the back everyone in the matchup zone can cheat out higher on the 3 and our quickness matters even more.

Also, I mentioned the development of Lavor Postell and think of what happens if Amir and Sir Dom do the same X2.

Our six returnees plus Branch plus two bigs and another shooter and the skies the limit BUT

Dunlap should be in very high demand and could be tempted away (in my head most likely to a head coach job in the NBA).

I dont think there will be two big men coming next year, i just dont sense it from the way Lavin has spoken. We might not even get one

Lavin said he feels he'll have a fabulous class when all is said and done with 4-5 guys. Just curious, but which part of "the way Lavin has spoken" has put you down that path. There's zero that Lavin has said or even inferred that would lead one to believe that. If its just your own guess then fine, but nothing he's said would imply that.

What could possibly make you think that?
When was the last time someone went from college assistant to NBA head coach??

Agree MCN and you have to feel that Lavin would not make such a bold statement if he could not deliver. The man is much to smart.

When it is this late in the recruiting season recruiting becomes like a box of chocolate ....you never know who you are going to get. LOL!

If anything, what Lavin has actually said should make you think the opposite. Whether you believe him or not is another story.

I think it'll be a solid class, but this is a Lavin class - I don't think we'll see two big men in the mold that most of us think of for a big man. Lavin wants guys who can run and play athletically. Better chance we see someone like God's Gift, or even a kid like Polee but with more weight. That's what I would expect. Either an athletic and strong but undersized TE's body (aka God's Gift), or a string bean ala Polee or Pelle.

I don't mind that type. Look how we play this year. Lavin wants gazelles. I see us landing 6'8"-6'9" PF types that are athletic and can run, much like obekpa and Jakarr. Lavin wants guys like Chris McCullough and Jermaine Lawrence. I don't think there is a heavy emphasis on Cooley-type big guys. If we find the right 7-footer, then I can see it, but not many fit the mold we're looking for.

I don't care what anyone says, this team as-is wil be great with just Branch. Anything else is just gravy. Show me a better back court next year than Branch-Greene-Harrison. #Sweeet Sixteen

I wouldn't mind it either. I'm coming around to the philosophy that we don't need a traditional big man. Seeing our frontcourt without God'S Gift starting shows how it could work. We're holding our own with Moe, Amir, and Pointer. Even against Josh Smith and the Ware brothers they did alright. And if we upgraded the size of just one of those spots, by playing say Sampson, Moe, and Amir together... I think that would be perfect for this system.

Like you said, if Lavin had a shot at a Noel or Anthony Davis type player.. that'd be great. But absent winning the lottery on one of them, this is an effective plan.

I'd like to have one in the tool box, but the team Lav and Dunlap are building will be a team that wears opponents down after 40 minutes. The length, the defense, the athleticism...there won't be a need to have a "banger" because we will play our style, not their style. Guys like Amir and Pointer will be the back-breakers for opponents.

Our center is our multiple zones. When we get a defensive rebound, we're all guards and forwards. It's our style under Lavin and I have to say I thoroughly enjoy it.

Agreed. The fact everyone can start the break is a huge plus for us. And it's great to watch.

This team won't be "great" with just Branch. That's a stretch and I think you know it Marillac.
Good, very good, I can get on board with those predictions. Great is reaching for something that's not there yet.

And as much as we'd like to project his ability, Branch is a huge unknown at this point. He was highly rated, but nothing he did at Texas AM suggests he's a can't miss player. In 20mins a game he was averaging 4pts and 2 assists.
What's surrounding D'angelo is still largely up in the air.

I think you might be underselling the kid as well as our staff. The kid came off the bench and doesn't have the benefit of Rico Hines and Dunlap working with him. I don't care about his numbers in limited action. Kid is a top player and our staff has shown that they can both evaluate talent and develop it. Look how all our guys this season have progressed. Branch is practicing now and was a top 50 player out of HS. I don't think it is that unknown. Even guys like DeAndre Daniels, Naadir Tharpe, Josiah Turner and lots of other top players who had limited impact their first season for various reasons. I'd take all of them if I could, because they are truly talented kids. I'll go out on a limb and say that I think Branch will be legit for SJU. He's obviously got the talent. He's also now got the coaching staff.

We also won't "just" have Branch here. We'll have more guys, and whomever they are won't be marginal guys. Lavin just doesn't go after those guys.
