Great win vs ND.. Garrett may very well be that 3rd scoring option we need from amongst this group as it continues to develop.. He goes to the hoop really well and being left handed helps since defenders don't see that look too often..
These guys are growing fast and hope this roll continues against Pitt and Rutgers..
I like everything about the Lavin/Dunlap Coaching style with this team, except 1 thing..
i really dislike this Match UP Zone.. in 2 seasons, with different players, it gives up way too many easy 3's to opponents! And, I don't believe it's just a case of having only 6 players...Last year's team was awful defending the 3 as well. Remember the Gonzaga game and others?
We were very fortunate ND shot only 4 for 31 from treyland.. If they hit their normal 30-35 %, we lose the game..And, strictly from a analysis point of view, the ND kid got way too good a look on the game ending miss and, he's not even their best 3 shooter.. Even Brey said they needed to hit more 3's than they did and usually do..Giving up 31 3's is not necessarily a good thing. but a win is a win and deserves celebration.
Watching the Syracuse Zone last night against the Ucant's( no NCAA IN 2013 FOR YOU , JIM), you see a much tighter zone than what Lavin Teaches.. Boeheim's Zone is legendary and is the model to emulate.
I loved the win, Garret's emerging scoring and everything about this team..I may be wrong, which is very possible but, I just think Lavin's Zone is too West Coast soft, especially at the back end of it.
i'd be interested in other views as I think there are many opposing ones. Having watched SJU BB for over 50 years and seeing Lapchick's and Louie's Man to Man for so long,
Anyway, it's a question that may inspire some interesting dialogue.
Lastly, both Boeheim and Calhoun are cancer survivors too. I'm sure they also experienced the rumors that swirl around Lavin's illness too. They both, emerged with better teams afterwards.
