Lavin Contract Extension

Never cared for Goodman;

@GoodmanESPN: Two administrative decisions that have surprised me: DePaul keeping Purnell for another year, Lavin on verge of signing lengthy extension.

@GoodmanESPN: Lavin extremely likable, but went to NCAA tourney first year with Norm Roberts' players - has not gone since, may not go this year. Year 4.
Did most people expect him to go to the NCAA's in years 2 and 3 with all freshmen and sophomores? Was that realistic?

Goodman shows lack of understanding

Cannot believe any one here actually believes Lavin is a candidate for Laker or Knick job. Carton is a Syracuse guy tweaking St. John's nation that they have an nba caliber coach. He is lacking as an x and o coach on the college level and nba players would tune him out as soon as he addresses the team with his cliché ridden, double phraseology speeches.

I hate so many of these "analysts". Goodman, Rothstein, Gottlieb, they are all so annoying. The worst part about them is they posess little knowledge about some teams and yet they still try and act omniscient. They have an attitude that nobody knows college basketball the way they do, and they are special followers of the game. It makes me sick to see some of them open their mouths about St. John's and other teams i follow when it's clear they are pulling statistics off a sheet of paper and pretending like they've seen the team play. It drives me insane.

Absolutely idiotic comment by Goodman. To dismiss in any way what they accomplished in his first year as done "with Norm Roberts players" is asinine. That was one of the better coaching jobs I've seen at SJU. Now one could argue whether Dunlap should get more of the credit, but to take a group of kids who had done nothing but get their teeth absolutely kicked in for three years straight and had so many awful habits - and within half a season turn them into a cohesive team primed for a tourney run was amazing to watch. Never would I have imagined that a team that had literally been held to single digit scoring in whole halves of basketball could so many bigtime victories (who knows what might of happened if DJ did not go down). Goodman just way off base on that. Shouldn't talk about something he obviously knows nothing about. The fact that he (or dunlap) did that coaching job with the players Norm had failed with repeatedly and spectacularly made it all the more impressive.

According to the Torch, Lavin is currently 4th in the list of Big East Coache's salaries @$2,027,307

Ouch
DePaul getting bang for their buck

Lavin has stated that he visioned that team making a final four run before the injury.

Good value at the bottom of the league?

He's recruited well. Coached well.

Gets less than Purnell and Willard? Lol

I don't think Parnell is worth the $. Cooley seems underpaid. Wright and Thompson seem to be where they should be.
I'll admit it was a bit eye opening to see the overall numbers.

Yes, quite a few, by inference. When you take the time to discuss it and give opinions on it...yes you believe what Carton said, that Lavin is a candidate.

Maybe the people in charge don't see it this way, but I think St. John's is facing a major dilemma right now. On one hand, Lavin has improved the perception of the program. Even though we are virtually in agreement that the team underachieved this year, I can't argue the fact that in 3 years of actual coaching, Lavin has brought the team to 1 NCAA Tournament and 2 NIT Tournaments. That is a hell of a lot better than previous years. And until this recruiting class, he has been successful in bringing Top 100 talent to Queens.

But we can't ignore the fact that this team should've been dancing this year. All season long we heard people continue to say how talented St. John's is and how it just wasn't translating to the court. We all watched as players continued to make the same mistakes over and over. The lack of coaching and execution was there all season long and it was difficult to watch at times. No offensive play calls, no strategy, poorly executed defense, questioning effort on a nightly basis. These are all major red flags. Then, we come to the 2014 recruiting class in which St. John's essentially has struck out on everybody out there. Sure, we all spun it as though players just didn't want to come to St. John's due to playing time issues. But we still lost out on pretty much everyone. And finally we come to today. Now, this is not a knock on JaKarr Sampson whatsoever. I wish him the very best and hope he gets drafted. He was a very good player for this team and I hope he gets the most out of his skills. But now Lavin is going to be scrambling for people left and right just to put a front court on the floor. Basically, our lone guys right now are Chris Obekpa (who people continue to say is looking to get out) and redshirt Christian Jones. Sure, they are in the running for Delarosa. And maybe they luck out and a transfer somehow falls in their lap. But this just seems chaotic and very unorganized.

Now, here's the underlying question. Do you really feel comfortable giving Lavin an extension at this point in time? Is it the right move to lock him up for essentially 6 more years under contract? Do you trust someone who will probably miss out on his fourth straight tournament next year (at least basing it on what SJU has upfront)? Cause if the answer to any of those is no, then the right move is to cut ties and move on.

i really don't understand why posters keep defending lavin by saying, "well, he's better than Norm!"

Set higher standards for yourself/the program...do better. Maybe they were too high, but based on expectations Lavin has been a complete failure...

Well at least we have not heard anything definitive, as opposed to JaKarr's situation at same time yesterday.

The sad thing is , recruiting is the only thing Lavins really good at. We have 4 scholis and possibly 1 more if CO leaves. So far we have no recruits signed and a project as a probable. And he has the nerve to say he is concentrating on 15 and 16.

Who really gives a rats ass what the hell he says, he`s a joke.
CO could be going also, and next year our bigs could be Pointer, Jones, and Adonis (that`s if he still comes.)
But he says that he`s concentrating on 15-16.
Could be a 14-15 win team next year, and I`n not exaggerating.
