Kudos For Ponds

Ponds reminds me somewhat of Bootsy in regard to what his juco coach said about him being like "slow death". Ponds plays with pace and than puts it into the next gear to beat his opponent. Case in point during the Butler game, he was coming down the court one on one with a defender back guarding him. Instead of trying to blow by the defender as most players probably would he instead took his time, let the defender basically ride him and then but on a little burst to beat him to the hoop for a lay-up. Very cagey and has much guile. We are very fortunate to have him.

don't remember that quote but love it.

Not to be cliché but Ponds is "mature beyond his years". I love that as a true freshman he is "under control". The sky is the limit when he adds a little more strength which should come with physical maturity.

And that he is still 18 years old in recent times some of our frosh were juniors by age!

My Dear Bamafan
Your last line is worth repeating!
Ponds is terrific as a player for us
Seems equally special as a young man
And how he'll undoubtedly attract other NYC players to our program - hasn't he already encouraged others to join...
Hence
Player
Person
Positive force
We are fortunate to have him!
All the best B!

Honestly and not being a homer but there is no other freshman in the country I would rather have than Shamorie Ponds. Pre-season we hoped he would average double digits. Well the kid is averaging almost 18 , has not given the staff a second of grief , has played the point when needed, has been a great rebounder and g d willing will be here for 4 years. The humble high scoring freshman lefty from Brooklyn reminds me so much of his coach 35 years ago.
I love Shamorie.

Lavin with great things to say about Ponds on the weekly FS1 BE report. Said he is the best of the frosh in the BE. Also had Lovett in his top 6 frosh.

Villanova guard Jalen Brunson named @BIGEAST player of the week. St. John's guard Shamorie Ponds named conference freshman of the week.

From SJU press release;

"Ponds becomes the first BIG EAST rookie this season to claim the league’s freshman of the week honors three times following a stretch that saw he and Ahmed lead the Red Storm to victories over the No.13/13 Butler at Carnesecca Arena and DePaul on the road."

Dear RMN
your points are excellent AND I think you left out this one as to Ponds attributes:
He has a great attitude; like his Coach, he's happy to be a Redmen player; he is magnetic and will influence other (local) players to sign on board!
Blessings to all of we posters and all the players on our team :)

9. Shamorie Ponds, St. John's

Last week: No. 9
17.7 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 3.4 APG, 2.0 steals, 52.3 2-pt%, 40.9 3-pt %, 120.9 ORtg
Ponds stays firm at No. 9 after winning Big East Freshman of the Week yet again. St. John's beat Butler and DePaul last week, is 2-0 in league play and now gets a huge chance by hosting Creighton on Wednesday night. Ponds and Patton won't be guarding each other, but it'll be nice to see the league's two best freshmen squaring off in New York. Ponds put up 26 points, the most of his college career, in the win over Butler. Nineteen of those points came in the second half. Against DePaul, Ponds had 15 points and four steals.

It would not be going out on a Limb to say I believe Ponds is a Lock for BE Freshman of the Year and also should get recognition for First, Second Team of BE end of Year Honors.

And, Lovett should be on All Freshman Team of BE .

My son said to me the other Day, If you think about it enough, Lovett and Ponds play almost like Twins. Their games are similiar in many ways but, also different. if that makes sense. Lovett's move to the Basket is one of the fastest I have seen recently and he goes hard to the Hoop. I think he is so fast that the Refs miss a lot of fouls he draws that wind up with him in the first row..He does get hammered a lot.

Ponds is so tricky going to the Hoop. At times it looks lackadaisical but, then he accelerates and goes right to the basket,or under the Rim for a reverse lay in or, pull up for that little Jumper he has.. The Stream of BE Announcers on our games are effuse about his instincts and skill and calmness on the Court. Not to be outdone, Lovett gets high praise too.

Hope we get 4 Seasons out of both Players, unlikely or not.

Put Simon, who can really fly, out there with those two & we will have quickest guard trio in country end to end perhaps.

Agree. Lovett might be a little faster end to end than Ponds but, who can tell.. Ponds speed is deceptive. He kinda lulls a defender and then, Whoosh, he's gone.. Lovett's motor is always on the High RPM level. it's like he knows he will win the race downcourt and there is nothing the defender can do. Maybe Foul him. Which is equally lethal since he shoots over 80% from the line.

I tell you, these 2 can go down in SJU History as Special Players. And, Champions, if they stay around long enough.. Their Numbers can be up there if they do. And, so much fun to watch! After all these Years of lousy BB.

The very best thing about Ponds is that he isn't 6'5". He'd be gone by this May if he was. Hope both he and Lovett stay here and happy for a long time.

If he were 6'5" with his abilities, he probably wouldn't be here in the first place.
