Ponds was 7-8 from inside the three point stripe last night. He made Butler pay for extending its defense to guard against the 3.
Per Jon Rothstein;
"He didn’t enter this season with the same type of buzz as other first-year guards like UCLA’s Lonzo Ball, Washington’s Markelle Fultz, or Kentucky’s dynamic duo of De’Aaron Fox and Malik Monk, but Ponds has quickly cemented himself as one of the best freshmen perimeter players in the country.
The crafty lefty scored 26 points on 15 shots in St. John’s upset of Butler on Thursday night at Carnesecca Arena and also grabbed seven rebounds in the win.
Like Harrison, Ponds isn’t necessarily projected as a one-and-done type talent like the guys mentioned above, but that doesn’t mean he’s not going to have four high-caliber years in the Big East.
Look for this 6-1 southpaw to thrive for the Red Storm as Chris Mullin attempts to rebuild his alma mater."
I think Lonzo Ball already has whatever national freshman of the year awards there are sewn up, but if Ponds doesn't hit a wall and doesn't make national freshman first-team (assuming it exists), then there is some serious bias going on.

Lots of season to go before anyone has any award sewn up.. I am not saying I think Shamorie will win it but as of right now Lonzo isn't even the best freshman in his own conference.

What I found very impressive was how he composed himself and seemed to search for the perfect "feel" before shooting those end of game free throws. Lot of other players, facing that pressure, would short circuit their routine and rush the shot.
Williams 2 free throws were the opposite.
Agree. He has done a good job on both ends of floor in the limited time he has played. Think he should continue to get time.What I found very impressive was how he composed himself and seemed to search for the perfect "feel" before shooting those end of game free throws. I felt bad for Williams. He hasn't been on the line at all this season and probably isn't a great free throw shooter. That was a lot of pressure.

If I remember correctly, it was only a few games ago that Williams was 7 for 8 from the line. He was just a little over excited.
Ponds is awesome but who cares about these individual awards. I want some team awards

You are right. He was 7-10 this year but that was a high pressure situation. We haven't had many players as calm on the line as Ponds recently. Even Harrison would miss a big one occasionally.

FWIW, Holyfield is 1.000 from the field this year, and .000 from the FT line. A bit of relatively useless information.
