Knicks

Did Thibs coach circles around Carlisle tonight?
I was one of those who said that Carlisle out-coached Thibs in the first two games. I still think he did.

But credit to Thibs for changing the lineup, playing more of the bench, and the team for making all the plays down the stretch, especially KAT, who was a monster in the fourth quarter.

Great win.

So many things to point to after three games, and we could say “if that only happened” about a lot, but he’s one tremendously unlucky bounce away from being up 2-1 in the conference finals. I just have a hard time blaming the coaching game, or especially pointing to one being superior to the other.

Human nature is pointing the finger at the “easy” target. Must be the Coaching. The real reason is simple the Pacers have outplayed the Knicks. Game 1 the Pacers hit ridiculous 3s and hit a game tying basket that bounced up to the rafters and fell in to tie. Game 2 the Pacers flat out beat the Knicks. Last night the Knicks played with desperation. Towns scored 20 points in the 4th quarter.

I saw both Towns and Brunson mention that “in the lockeroom” we believe in each other. That’s all that counts but they need to play like it. Guys like Tierney are passionate but misguided.

True, but the horrific play late in game one was the reason Halliburton’s lucky bounce mattered.

Thibs was stubborn about not playing more than seven in the rotation. It could be the guys were gassed late.

He played nine guys in game three (including everyone playing 10+ minutes) which may have factored in the energy and great defense they played the fourth quarter. Thibs also balanced Brunson’s foul trouble extremely well.

Horrific play also coincided with the pacers hitting 7 of 8 threes prior to the last second prayer by Halliburton. Just think there’s always more to it. But of course coaches do deserve credit too so no problem criticizing them.

Is it also human nature to point the finger and give too much credit for coaching? Just look at SJU, we give (and deservedly so) a lot credit of the program’s success to Pitino. But he also received criticism for benching RJ (and please let’s not turn this into an RJ thread).

Let’s not conflate criticizing Thibs by saying he was out-coached, during a playoff series where every move is under a microscope (in particular the fourth quarter), to mean he is a bad coach. The other team has good coaches too, or they would not be in the ECF..

Very much on the money post. IMO, the best of coaching is done in practice, not games. Either Thibodeau or Carlisle could be up or down 3-0 but players decide games once they start, not coaches. Not that coaches don’t affect games, of course they do, but players making plays or not in the moment are the ultimate decider.

I am pointing directly at people who have already started the Thibs must be fired crowd. It’s ridiculous. Brandon Tierney blows like the wind. He came to this conclusion during the season. Then they won a couple of series. So he waffled. Then lose two to the Pacers and you get his BS tweet. Team is in the ECF.

I’m in the fire Thibs crowd because of minutes, although that seems to not be an issue this postseason. But I also find the hypocrisy of him refusing to use Delon Wright in the regular season while using him in the most important postseason game a bit mind bending.

I’m not even sure how to interpret it. Was Thibs so stubborn in the regular season but did this out of desperation?

Either way, I agree with people’s points that this series falls on the players.

Yeah, I was surprised by Wright playing. Then again it worked. I guess.

The whole minutes thing is a talking point. Yet, the Knicks basically are the healthiest team in the playoffs. Way overblown talking point. Kind of like you turn into a pumpkin in baseball at 90 pitches then they take you out when you are tossing a shutout. Injuries just happen. Part of sports.
