Knicks

Hand up, I always appreciated Thibs but wanted him gone after the season. The fact that they had no game plan after the firing and have been dragged in the media for taking hail Mary’s with every employed HC and getting denied by each club is a JOKE. Classic Knicks.

And people didn’t want to believe it when I said Giannis didn’t want to be here because of Dolan but that was straight from the horses mouth. A zebra can’t change its stripes!

I do know a couple of things that players were surprised about over the course of Thibodeau’s tenure:

The Knicks didn’t have full scrimmages during an entire training camp one season, which is uncommon. The players found it odd that they didn’t scrimmage during the camp; Thibodeau’s Knicks didn’t scrimmage often in season, which is more common in the NBA. But the lack of scrimmaging hindered the players’ ability to develop cohesion, they’ve said.

Players were also surprised that they didn’t work on specific end-game situations during the season, which is something that most teams do. They found it strange that the coaching staff didn’t go over those situations during practice.

Are these reasons to fire Thibodeau? Probably not. But the players involved questioned the approach. Again, I don’t know if these critiques were raised during the meetings with Dolan, Rose and whoever else was in the room.

Obviously DK the type of guy who wakes up on the weekends and says “ what am I going to do today “ 😀
I just think it's a little naive to think we would have a coach ready to go, especially after making the ECF.

If this was a results-based decision, ofc he should stay. But I appreciate that the FO looked at the entire season and context of the playoffs. The team's chemistry barely developed from Game 1 to Game 82. In some ways, it actually regressed! There was also a total lack of experimentation throughout the season, the way he handled Mikal's gripe about minutes was petulant and ridiculous, and our offense wasn't maximized as much as it could've been. Going 0-10 in the regular season against BOS/OKC/CLE was a pretty bad indictment.

Playoffs-wise, we barely got through Detroit, which was embarrassing considering the roster advantage. The Boston series was a lot of fun and important for the franchise. But I wouldn't necessarily blame the FO if they saw it as flukey (KP injured, Jrue injured, and 4th q comebacks/BOS missing threes )and less as an elite team coming together at the right time. The Indy series was very frustrating.

If the reporting is accurate, and we have a guy saying he won't play for Thibs next year & others wanting changes + Thibs not wanting to do it, I am unsure we can really roll it back with him. NBA is a star-driven league, and maximizing Mikal/KAT/OG would do better for the team than keeping Thibs.

So, in terms of the search, why is it a bad thing to request and see who's available to you? It may be painful for fans, especially with the media doing Knicks-for-clicks + others enjoying laughing at us, but I do think its due diligence. We don't have a reason to rush it (although I think not having a coach by the draft would be malpractice). There's plenty of coaches with championship pedigree available, and others who are pretty good. Why not see what happens? The Kidd thing appears to be a Brunson driven thing as much as anything else. Of course you go for his former coach!

I was as critical as anyone about Thibs and his absolute stubbornness to any type of change.

But firing him was at best questionable, at worst madness. He had a Pat Riley-like impact on a franchise that had been flailing for almost 20 years.

So the argument is Thibs can only take you so far. I actually agreed with that. He was so damn rigid. He ran his starters into the ground, which I'm positive is the reason why they looked like punching bags in one playoff game and world beaters the next.

But if you decide to move on, do it early and have someone waiting in the wings who is better.

Or at least someone who you think is better.

Obviously, that wasn't the case.

There was no plan here. No transition. Just dysfunction and embarrassment.

And while it isn't an exact parallel, I'm getting flashbacks to the STJ coaching search of 2019.

So it all comes down to this: Does James Jones want the Knicks job?

Paul Hewitt may be available.

This thread is a combination of two things: LMF rants and DK's Hall of Fame of Bad Takes

Steve Masiello, former Knick’s ball boy, has been allowed to speak to Dolan brain trust and considered a strong contender for HC spot . 😎

I kind of agreed as well, but as I watch the Pacers inch towards winning a championship, you sit there and realize... damn... how far were we from possibly winning it all? We lost to that team in 6 hard fought games, and that includes possibly the most statistically improbable blown lead of all time in game 1. Which, listen, no excuses there, terrible loss, everyone gets blamed, but some of the shi*t that happened in that 4th quarter was just unlucky too. Nesmith never made more than 2 threes in a game for the rest of the series. He morphed into prime Steph Curry on a heater for 10 minutes.

Maybe there were some hard feelings between thibs and the front office for the Toppin thing? Getting beat by Obi Toppin two years in a row and seeing him be a useful role player, has to sting. We gave him away because he got into an argument with Thibs.

I think Thibs is still our coach if there weren't hard feelings between our players right now and him.

you're probably right, my hang up there would be if Bridges is the main one with hard feelings. I don't think we should necessarily be making big franchise wide changes to keep Mikal Bridges happy until Mikal Bridges shows some damn consistency.

But there was also this report, too. It is possible there is just a lot of hard feelings in that locker room that we just are not privy to right now.

I’d be very surprised if Bridges is the main one who expressed dissatisfaction.

It's through this lens why this doesn't bother me. It's not about getting a better coach. It's about a better coach for this team.

Mikal would be my guess based off of his public comments + the reports after the year of not liking/knowing his role. We invested in five first round picks and his contract expires after this year. FO is in a tough spot to not care about his opinion. I do think he can excel on this team.

KAT or OG are also safe guesses. A ton invested in each.
