Keita Injury

Based on what everyone has seen so far, and the loss of Keita, anyone who said we sweep OOC games except for Duke want to change their mind?

Can’t really be surprised anymore when this stuff is routine in SJ/Mets world. Par for course unfortunately. Hearing “day to day” is awful news only in Queens...very strange how it literally always ends up being much worse than expected after those words are uttered. Anyway, get better Keita...don’t expect him to be back in 6 wks either we all know how these things go...we’d be lucky to get him back midway through conference play. Not recruiting bigs came home to roost. Staff owns this and expectations should be same for OOC at least.

No f'ing way, we couldn't have gotten a few more 6-9, 6-10 guy on the team? BSSSSSSSS
I'm sticking with sweep in ooc before the SHU game, or BUST.
If not then this is all on Chris.

Never thought we would sweep OOC with Keita. He certainly did not show much in his limited playing time. Looked like he was going to commit many fouls as our "big" men typically do.

I wasn't expecting much, but perhaps six or seven minutes a game to help spell Keita and to give us some more fouls to play with on the interior. It does not appear that from the coach's evaluation that he is ready for that quite yet.

With a few low majors on the schedule over the next six weeks (Maryland Eastern Shore, Mount St. Mary's, Wagner, St. Francis and Sacred Heart) perhaps he can get on the floor a bit to see if he has anything to contribute this season and beyond. If not, then I am unclear what the long range plan is for him. I realize Roberts is still very raw and far down the depth chart in terms of game readiness but with Keita out for six weeks or so getting him on the floor for a few minutes against weaker competition can only help with his long term development.

Class of 72 I am not disputing your premise here but if there would never be a long term development approach to big men, then how do you rationalize the recruiting of Roberts or for that matter Earlington to this roster. Do you believe they were just trying to fill spots and hoping against hope to catch lightning in a bottle or do you have some other explanation of their thinking?

Earlington is now slimmed down and listed at 6'6" / 220.... not that big, and unlikely to become a Bonzie Colson.

Me thinks that you answered your own question. The only "big man " that lasted 4 years was Amar Alibegovic who was a Lavin recruit. This staff actually asked him to look for a new school until they fell flat in replacing him. This staff has broken the St. John's record for players transferring out, losing out on their targets and transfers in. Not the impact anyone expected after the Lavin "down years" when we went to two NCAA and NIT tournaments.

Marvin Clark is the same height as Ty Grant was. And though Grant was a terrific low post player Clark is solidly built and a ten times better athlete than Grant was. Clark needs to use his body and quickness and get himself 6 and a half boards a game and take any bigs that are guarding him outside to guard him on offense. I think this is something Clark can do and honestly something that needs to be done.
They are going to play zone against us and let us launch 3 pointer after 3 pointer while their bigs stay out of foul trouble and destroy us on the glass.
On defensive end it is just positioning and desire. Clark should be able to get 6 or 7 boards and hold his own.
This is completely false. If you put someone that is 4-5 inches shorter in front of me I will rebound over them all day without fouling. Will they get some from positioning and luck, sure, but it is not a good strategy. Play the taller guy (Roberts) who may be a liability on offense (who cares, we have enough fire power) and if nothing else keep Clark fresh for the offensive end.
Wes Unseld, Willis Reed, Charles Barkley, Jerome Lane, Dennis Rodman and Kenneth Faried just to name some strongly disagree.
So you think Marvin Clark is as good as some of the greatest to ever play the game? Great argument.
Just guys who popped into my head by I am sure Jerome and Kenneth's family and friends totally appreciate you overestimating their ability.
How about Ty Grant, Lamont Middleton, Anthony Glover and Billy Singleton?
Or are they some of the greatest ever?
Ok, you're right, height doesn't matter in basketball. Tell Mullin to call me. I have great desire, know how to get good defensive position, have 4 years of eligibility left and can pay my own tuition. I'm 6 feet tall, and 210 pounds, so I should be a great rebounder.

Xavier's Tyrique Jones will also kill us. He is going to have a breakout year.

Sedee Keita out 4-6 weeks after undergoing knee surgery. #sjubb
And there you go, just what most of us feared. No numbers in the bigs department. Just great.

First G'town game in Jan 5th... hopefully Keita is back by then.

Govan's 3 games last year against us were good, but not overly concerned as he's not a total under the basket big. He can get is points and boards, but need to dominate the other guys on floor.

18 pts / 13 reb
16 pts / 8 reb (2 OT)
28 pts / 11 reb (BET game)

Asked Chris Mullin if he regretted not having more depth in size, and said he's happy with what he has. Doesn't look back with regret. #sjubb
If he truly believes that, he truly is clueless.

Matt A:

"Let's all keep Sedee Keita in our thoughts. He will work ridiculously hard to be back stronger than before. In the meantime his boys will come up big for him & hold it down till his return".

Zach B:

Asked Chris Mullin if this means a bigger role for Josh Roberts and was noncommital, depends on how game goes. Said he hasn't played much because there are better players ahead of him".

It is time to have the good Vincentian Fathers conduct an exerocism of the St. John’s men’s basketball program to rid the curse which the basketball gods placed on the program when the basketball gods became offended that the sacred name “Redmen” was scrapped for the meaningless “Red Storm” name.

If St. John’s basketball didn’t have bad luck then it would have no luck at all.

Yes!
Can't wait for all the Redmen vs. Red Storm posts now!

Most of you are getting carried away! Would I have liked a couple capable big men? Of course. But listing the players who are going to kill us now that Keita is injured is just plain silly. The guy fouled out in like 3 minutes vs ST Mary's? Is that who we played our first game? We really didn't have a capable big with Keita, so in my mind this is not a huge loss on the court. No disrespect to Keita or his knee.

They keep saying "knee surgery" but has anyone heard what type of knee surgery. I know it was a scoped surgery, but was it just a clean out or did something get repaired? Only repair I know that could come back that quickly would be a very small meniscus tear.
