Kadary

Wouldn't have needed another guy to step up. Would have just needed them to be a net zero and not a huge negative.

That wasn't a game we lost by double digits. We were right in it at the end. If we replaced Kadary's 35 mins of 1-8 shooting, 2 Assists, 3 Turnovers with a replacement level player we win that game.
The rest of the team was 18-53 lol. Combined for 3 assists and 12 TOs.

We lost because the team shot 31% from the field and 10% from 3 point land. Georgia shot 49% and 41%. It was still only a one possession loss.
If we have a slightly* below average shooting game vs Georgia... be win by close to 10.... we have 2 Ls by 4 points total....

This team is set to do damage in the League- be competitive EVERY game. There is not 1 game i am chalking up as an L .... will ther be losses- of course... but this team has the players to compete and Beat Every team in the league.

Haven't felt this confident going into League play... since ever... lol...

This team's taught me how important size and athleticism matters in college. It really helps cover up things like a bad shooting night.

St. John's'teams have taught me over the years, don't get out over your skis. When you think you're poised for greatness disaster strikes. I've been so optimistic so often, my buddies call me glass half-full. "Hey, Bob, what do you think about St. John's this year"? Me: "I think we can be really good". Needless to say, wrong way more than right.

The glass is not half-empty, and it's not half-full, it's twice the size it needs to be.

You can say the same about Deivon Smith who went 1-7, Wilcher who went 1-6, Dunlap 0-4, Scott 2-11 from 3pt.
Won't argue much on that but would push back on Scott scored 14 points on 14 shots which isn't great but isn't bad either. Also neither Smith nor Wilcher nor Dunlap played 25 mins in that game. Kadary played 35.

Okay but those things require context. Scott had a bad game. He was late to every loose ball, and 2-11 is bad.

Smith played 24 minutes, in part, because he was so low energy that he had numerous idiotic turnovers. one of them was a shot clock violation, and another was trying to catch a ball with one hand that missed. He then yelled at the coach when taken out, and didn't return.

Wilcher played 21 minutes, in part, because he was completely out of control. He got a stupid technical foul that helped stop any run we were going to have in the first half. He was rightly benched the rest of the half, and he also yelled at the coach. And in the second half, missed a bunny lay-up and had a super consequential turnover late in the game.

Their impacts were just as devastating as Kadary's.

I'm always guilty of the same thing with friends and family. I'm embarrassed to hype up the team. lol

The bench in this game:

45 minutes
1-11 FG
5/6 FT
7 points
3 rebs
1 assist
2 TO

Oh what they could have accomplished if they got 35 more minutes

Being at the game in-person, the whole thing was just terrible. I genuinely wish I hadn't gone so I could've enjoyed one last full day at the beach. If we simulated the STJ-Georgia game 1,000 times, this is probably in the 1% of worst possible games from us...and we lost by 3

Attendance was officially listed at 419..not sure the game could have been played with only 418 there.

The fact that the other players on the team played poorly has nothing to do with with my point about us winning that game with a replacement level player in place of our $1M NIL potential All American Kadary Richmond. Sure it's a hypothetical but it's really not a reach at all

You're very clear implication is that Kadary cost us the game. It's just not true. We could've replaced literally anyone in our rotation, absent of Zuby, with a replacement level player and we win.

Outside of Zuby and Scott (Despite the 2-11 from 3 Scott had a solid game, best offensive rating on the team that game) nobody played well, that's very true. Despite that, all we needed was the guy we paid 7 figured for and was lauded as potentially the best transfer in all of college basketball to not play absolutely terribly and we win. You can't hold Kadary to the same standard as the other guys because this roster is built to withstand guys like Wilcher and Dunlap having bad games. It's not built to withstand that from Kadary.

All that said, I think Kadary is going to win us some games on his own to make up for it throughout the season. I'd be far more concerned if Pitino wasn't as publicly comfortable with where the team is right now. But the margin of error is thin in this sport and Kadary can't have bad games like that going forward.

Excerpt on Kadary:

Grade: C+

It has been a rocky start to the season for Kadary Richmond who was an All-Big East First-Team selection just a season ago.

The 6-foot-6 guard stuffed the stat sheet for the Seton Hall Pirates and led them to the NIT Championship. Now, just a few months later, Richmond is having a hard time finding his footing with St. John's

Playing alongside Utah transfer Deivon Smith, another stat-sheet stuffing guard, has proven to have its challenges since both players are the most effective with the ball in their hands.

However, as he adjusts to his new role, Richmond is starting to perform more like we expected. Hope that he's turning the corner came during St. John's 88-71 win over Kansas State on Saturday in which Richmond had 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and three blocks.

But, when looking back on the first quarter of the season, No. 1 transfer of the 2024 cycle has been a bit underwhelming so far.
