Looking good.
Off topic a touch, wondering when rice be cooking at SJU...next week hopefully...?

Providence lands 2019 4 ⭐️PF Greg Gantt Jr., joining Butler (2), Creighton, DePaul, Nova (2) and Xavier as Big East schools who have landed 4⭐️recruits for 2019. Our Johnnies hovering in The Friend Zone as per usual.

Haven't been this much 'in the mix' with a cluster of Top kids (4*s/5*s) since Lavin's first year--what 7 years ago?
We'll do it this year.
Keep the faith.

Chicago, got to give it to you, you are the eternal optimist. I too am encouraged by staff's efforts on the circuit this year. However, as WCJF points out we are behind the majority of our BE brethren at this point. In that first year, Lavin was not just in the mix, he actually got 4 top 100 kids. If we get 2 this year, I'll be thrilled. Hoping for the best, let's get MH cleared to play!

Yes Lavins first recruiting class was spectacular, no ifs and or buts. However , he had immediate pt to sell. The only pt this staff has to sell is for a very good or better 4 and 5. We are loaded at the 1-3. Very deep. If we can get a Lewis or a Precious they may play at the 4 at times or LF will play the 2.
So before you all set yourselves up for disappointment and make unrealistic comparisons look at what we have and what we need. And then remember many were super bummed out last April until we got a first team AA JC player and a five star transfer in Heron. Recruiting fortunes ccan change in a second. Have patience this staff has showed a remarkable resilience on the recruiting front.
Having said that my fingers are crossed and I am praying.

Understood Redmannorth. Not panicking and as I said still encouraged. The Lavin reference was more to show evidence that it is still possible to recruit top talent to SJU. As for playing time in 2019, at least three of our top players in 2018 (assuming MH plays) will be gone and there will be ample playing time for four plus star talent.

In fairness, anyone who reads this board knows I have little respect for Steve Lavin so take my comment with however much salt you think appropriate; that “top talent” recruited in his first year translated to exactly one NCAA tournament appearance. So rankings are great for fans to keep score but results are what matter. So Mullin enters into the phase of his time at SJU where he needs results on the court. I don’t care if he does it with transfers, 4 year high schoolers who develop over time, I don’t care if he does it with foreign players, I don’t care where he gets his players as long at it is above board and we win. Outside of Harrison and Green and to a lesser extent Pointer, who of Lavin’s “monster” class advanced us as a program? Harkless made a great decision and no one can blame him a bit. Sampson wound up playing for himself, Obepka a disaster. The next year Jordan, who was a walking nightmare to the program. So “on paper” discussions of recruiting are great but results are all that matter. So we shall see, even without Heron, we should see marked improvement this year. With him, it is certainly NCAA or bust. And I believe we will have him.

Many sweet 16 appearances and an elite8 appearance.Right now Mullin has no successful season under his belt. Hopefully we win this year and recruits will see winnng and player development.

We appreciate your candor in your dislike for Steve Lavin and the obvious painting with broad brush to tarnish his players.
Steve had faults, both as a coach and recruiter, but Chris has a long way to go to replicate Lavin’s "results" at two schools. Especially with regard to post season appearances.

Except for Jordan, who is in jail, every one of those Lavin players has been earning a living playing professional basketball.
Except for Lavin’s first year with those players as freshmen, where he did not coach, his players never had a losing record and went to the post season three years in a row. Even as freshmen those players, without their coach, won 6 Big East games when the conference had 16 members.
In comparison, it took Norm Roberts, whom you may have liked, six seasons just to get to ONE N.I.T.
Lavin, in comparison to Roberts, was like going from Brian Mahoney to John Calipari.
Fast forward to Chris Mullin. Three consecutive losing seasons. Last place finishes in a ten team conference. Has not recruited one legitimate big man. Fired or suspended his 600k associate head coach after one season. Allows his friend and current assistant coach to work part time at full pay with zero recruiting responsibility. Spends all his non-working time in California.
And you want to come here and talk about RECRUITING and use Lavin as an example????????
Major major fail my redmen friend.

Look we all have our players and coaches we don't like and who we know we can't be objective about. Say what you will about Lavin, he brought our program back from the depths of despair into the NY limelight and into respectability; that can't be argued or diminished. As for the four top 100 players I was referencing they were Harrison, Harkless, Pointer & Garret all of whom did our program proud in different ways. Throw in Phil Greene (a less than top 100 guy) and you have 5 guys who we can be proud of from that class. Yes, they only got to one NCAA and part of that can be blamed on lack of coaching (although only 3 played their string out), but the recruiting coup was a fact and shows that it can be done at a so called commuter school like SJU. I am still very enthused by the current direction of our program, but do not believe that Chris is operating under impossible conditions any more than Lavin was.

Trying to stay positive but we can give the staff credit they are out there trying but when you are up against schools like Duke ,UK,Kansas Nova where recruits just always have them on their lists it so hard. These schools really do not have to solicit players . WE have been out there and have contacted many recruits who have not verbal to us I know what we have so far and that is good but we need the likes of a Scottie Lewis to make a statement and I am not at all confident that we will get him. It is were we are as a program right now, think we will need a few more yrs to become very good Must stay grounded with our expectations and root hard for our current t]eam
