July Evaluation Periods

One of the best parts about a non shoe company event like the Summer Jam is that we get to see teams from different shoe companies matched up against each other. The current matchup between KC Run GMC of Under Armour's Association and the New York Rens of the Nike EYBL is a great one.

First, there's a ton of talent on the floor. We get a five-star big man matchup of KC's Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and the Rens Kofi Cockburn. Run GMC also has top 50 combo guard Zach Harvey while the Rens also feature 2020 four-star wing Ethan Morton, 2020 four-star big man Kareem Reid and likely 2021 five-star to be wing Jonathan Kuminga. Unfortuanately, they are without five-star combo guard Jalen Lecque for tonight's game.

No surprise here, but the college coaching crowd is thick. Arizona, Kansas, Purdue and Northern Kentucky have head coaches on hand. Among the schools that I've spotted assistants from are Cleveland State, Florida State, Central Michigan, St. John's, Indiana, UCLA, Loyola (Chicago), Boise State, Bradley, SIU-Edwardsville, Washington State, Iowa State, Creighton, Missouri, Illinois, Colorado State, Wright State, South Dakota State, Marquette, Nebraska, Xavier, UConn, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Cincinnati, Butler, Florida, Pittsburgh, Xavier, North Dakota, Georgetown and many, many more.

Mequon, Wisc. -- It's the opening night of July's second live period and national basketball analyst Eric Bossi is in the Milwaukee area for the NY2LA Summer Jam. Follow along for all of the action and who is watching whom.

More Bossi;
Add John Calipari to the group of head coaches watching a matchup of five-star bigs. Kofi Cockburn has been a monster here early through second half

The 17U EYBL squad is off to a solid start in Milwaukee after defeating KC Run GMC in the @ny2lasports Summer Jam showcase game opener. Kofi Cockburn had 24pts, followed by Jonathan Kuminga’s 12 in front of Arizona, Kentucky, UCLA, Oregon, St. Johns, Kansas, & more.

Sounds about time to remind Cockburn that going to Kentucky will not automatically make you a star. Same with Kansas. Look no further than Diallo and Briscoe. They would have made names for themselves in a smaller pond here at SJ but did not do anything special at the blue blood schools. They were just another player at those schools.

St. John's Head Coach Chris Mullin is in to see '19 Lester Quinones. @TheHoopGroup

“Xavier, Florida, St. John’s, Pittsburgh, Clemson, UConn, those are probably [recruiting me] the hardest,” he said. “t feels like yesterday, basically, freshman year, and getting my first offer. It’s crazy that it’s about to be over.”

Gaffney arrived at the Westtown School last fall after previously playing at Lawrenceville Prep (N.J.). He was the second-leading scorer on the Friends’ Schools League champion Moose at 16.6 ppg, and will be expected to be their go-to bucket-getter this fall with Cameron Reddish off at Duke, though he’ll have plenty of help.

While he doesn’t have elite size for an off-guard, Gaffney makes up for that with a bouncy game, getting great lift on his 3-point shot and into the lane with ease. His outside shot wasn’t particularly falling on Thursday afternoon, but he found ways to be disruptive on drive-and-kicks and getting to the basket in transition.

So far, Gaffney has one official visit set, to the University of Florida, in September; the Gators had assistant Darris Nichols watching Gaffney multiple times on Thursday.

“I took an unofficial there freshman year with Scottie Lewis and Bryan Antoine, a bunch of those guys,” he said. “I love the campus, it’s a great atmosphere, so I’m just looking forward to seeing the rest of it.”

Though Florida was the only official schedule, Gaffney insisted that didn’t label them as a favorite, and he intends to take all five officials before making a decision, which he said didn’t necessarily have to come before the early signing period.

“The factor that’s playing the biggest part is probably what program can get me to the next level, which is playing pro, in the NBA, whatever,” he said. “Who’s going to develop my game the most.” -- Josh Verlin

Very pleased to report that the Brookwood Elite team just beat the NY Jayhawks in LA to move to the Adidas Gauntlet Finals tomorrow. I am sure staff members were at the game. Amazing rise for a program started by 2 young men some 15 years ago with no money or resources but a strong desire to keep teenagers out of trouble and in school with the carrot of driving them to tournaments in the US to play against the highest levels of competition.
Today every top player in Quebec wants to play for Brookwood Elite.
They have placed many a kid in Division 1 schools over the past decade with Luguenz the highest rated to date and there will be more in the future including 2019.
On a personal note I am very proud to be their lawyer and to be associated with such a fine and caring group of people.

Any truth to the rumor that you're replacing Mitch on staff and bringing the Brookwood kids with you?

Nope, although Redmannorth would make a fine assistant coach, having known him for the past 15+/- years I know he would make a terrific Athletic Director for St. John’s.

A quote about lawyers from 41ndone's favorite movie "Legally Blonde".
