Julian Champagnie’s Development

You turn the clock back about six months and you have a high school senior still uncommitted who has the height and body frame to play immediately in big time college ball. He can handle the ball, has good hands and has a decent outside shot and has played against competitive opposition.
How was he not rated in the second tier of recruits ? One game again he took a pass about five feet from the basket, turned, jumped and threw in a hook shot. This basic big man move has been probably performed less than ten times at SJU since Walter Berry left. SJU lucked out with Champagnie.

Honestly this is the only way SJU will be relevant again, we are not going to attract the cream of the crop and have to mine the fields for these "diamonds in the rough". Give credit to the staff for being able to have an eye to locate this kid, he is going to make some noise here.

Could not disagree more with your recruiting conclusion.
Recruiting is real hard work and this staff is not going after the kids who are looking for Kentucky and Duke, and I applaud them for that. They are looking for 3 and 4 star kids as well as high ranked jucos and have met with immediate success in recruiting. We got 2 jucos that May very well finish in the top 10 a 4 star pg who would be ranked much higher had he played his junior season and an underrated 2 star wing that fits the coaches system. When spring time and summer 2020 recruiting comes around and CMA can point to the development of Champagnie, Roberts, Earlington, Caraher, Dunn all of whom no one thought were BE material we will become an even easier sell.

Not sure of your point, an easier sell to who? The “Duke/Kentucky” player or players who crave development? Two entirely different animals. General statement I know, but players looking to bolt after a year or two are not necessarily looking to play in a system like Anderson’s, where minutes are controlled and the ball shared. Again, a general not absolute statement.
Yes ,totally agree also we are in trouble if out fg shooting doesn’t get to at least over you 70%
If our FG shooting pct. gets to over 70% we'll never lose another game.:) ;)

As others have said, we'll see how Champ, Earl, etc do against better comp. So far they've all met or exceeded expectations, with the exception of Williams and Caraher. What impresses me most about Champ is his maturity level. He plays well within his abilities, and like someone much older than his years. Rarely forces anything, great court awareness/instincts, etc. I know it's been mentioned countless times before, but kudos to CMA and Co for a great find.

Think USG meant FT shooting(at least I hope he did). Think you knew that :)

That may be true for most but also not too many of those players want to play in Missouri (unless their dad's on the staff) or Arkansas either. Hopefully CMA and staff will improve in that area with NYC/MSG to sell. PS I'm not saying Top 10 or even top 25 players (unless they're local) should be primary recruiting targets but top 26-75 recruits should be very achievable KPIs.

I think Caraher has played very well. We don't beat UMass without him and he's rebounds better than I thought he would. He's going to be a good player for us. And he hits his FT's.

What kind of expectations did you have for Caraher? He’s better than I thought he’d be.

Didn't mean this a knock on the kid, or on Williams. Not giving up on either. And while Caraher has had his moments, I was expecting more from him. Especially against lesser comp. So while the term "met or exceeded(expectations)" is somewhat subjective, he's come up short of my expectations.

That's all good and well, but unless you saw him play at Houston Baptist, then you and I have the same exact basis on which to form an expectation. I'm generally pretty conservative in my expectations, but I thought the kid would be giving us more against lesser comp. The UMASS game was great, but it was an outlier. If he gives us these same stats against better comp, that's a different story. At the end of the day, expectations are like opinions which are like a-holes: everyone's got one.

And if assholes could fly this place would be an airport ;).

Don’t necessarily disagree with you in regards to his scoring. It’s his well rounded game and feel that have impressed me.

Agree he doesn’t hurt us when he’s on the court. Another smart ballplayer. Maybe my expectations were a little lofty based on his numbers at HB.

To further appreciate David watch how he moves about on offense without the ball cruising the baseline looking for an opening as he cuts off picks. In addition, he does not force shots. Also I am interested to see him working an in/out-give and go with Steere based on their playing together in HS and AAU. They appear to be good friends who know each others game from the small window of the October practice.
