Julian Champagnie’s Development

Oh man some of the comments on here labeling people soft. Mustapha Heron Averaged 15.2 Ppg and 6.1 rpg and 16.4 Ppg and 5.3 rpg in two years at Auburn playing D1 basketball of a very good conference. Last season he averaged 14.6 Ppg and 4.7rpg for SJU. Yes, so far this season Mustapha is struggling. So what. It happens.

Yet some of our keyboard warriors and alleged fans label him “soft”. Sad.

From watching as much Posh as I can find the last month or so, his biggest strength is his passing, in particular within the lane. His in tight passing is really special. Great knowing we’ll have bigs for him to partner with.

I'm so sorry please forgive me, didn't know people would be all butt hurt over that.
Ok, I'll label fragile, someone else labelled him that and nobody complained about that.
So fragile it is.

Josh Roberts also was ranked #272 nationally but has greatly outperformed that ranking. Caraher was #311. Earlington was #520. Over the past 8/9 years we've more often than not had starters primarily in the top 100 range. Just shows that there's a lot more to recruiting than just the numbers game.[/quote]

I don't get how a kid who averages 19 and 11 and helps lead his team to a top five ranking in a state like Jersey ends up ranked 520.

On a side note, I was not initially excited about Julian. I was happy he came aboard, but there admittedly weren't many other feelings. But then saw his pic and realized he had good size and looked thick enough to get some minutes at PF for us. But what he's done has wildly exceeded my expectations.

Kind of reminds me on Ty Grant's freshman year. I'm not sure if NYC insiders expected Grant to do what he did, but as a Long islander who didn't get to watch PSAL games aside from a few playoff games, I was shocked that Ty was able to give us 7 and 7. I'm experiencing similar shock with Champ's numbers so far.

I am also, i just say how i see it, and won't apologize for it, it's my opinion.
Hopefully by conference play he'll be back, we'll need him.

Right now he's hesitating and doesn't seem to have confidence in his shot. Last year he had a tendency to drive into traps on his way to the basket and was double and triple teamed and forced up shots, he's been doing that again recently. Maybe Anderson can get him some good looks on Saturday and he gets his confidence/shot back. As great as Josh and Julian have been recently we need Heron back in form, especially when we take on the majors and BE foes.

Not some, one, so consider the source. No correlation between losing confidence, playing poorly and being soft. A lot of respect for Heron the man cheering and happy for the team success when you know this slump has to be killing him. He is obviously not used to being on the bench but carried himself like the classy, genuine leader he is.

And he's a senior, why is he making those mistakes again, dwvelope a step back jumper if the defense cuts you off, or just pass it.

Wow, you post like a guy who never dribbled a ball in his life. Or competed at anything. If it was that easy everyone would do it.

Not saying it's that easy, but you gotta try to develope more of a game, or the same things will happen to him

Once he shoots consistently from outside they'll have to guard him more honestly and that will open up his drives to the hoop.

Lou constructed an entire program getting mostly second-tier NYC kids (Plair, Gilroy, Jayson Williams, Singleton, etc) along with the occasional superstar (Mullin, Berry, Sealy, etc.)

Would love to see the same with Champ, Dunn, Wusu and more....

He was a 5 star recruit that came here and is an extremely high character kid. Hence, I hate to write anything negative about him. He plays hard but is slumping.

Yeah, should have said fragile since that's allowed. My bad, will never happen again

Champaigne is my favorite player. Since you know this thread is supposedly about him....
Heron problem is he does not have a strong enough handle and is not athletic enough to finish in traffic at the rim.
He is what he is a solid 14 point per game scorer. Funny people tried to blame Ponds for Heron "struggles" last year. When the only problem is the people miscasting him as a number one option.

What you should do is $hitcan the “poor me” act. I don’t decide what is “allowed” on this site; the ones that do are provided very clearly at the top and bottom of each page. Heron is neither soft or fragile, he is in a slump, it has happened to even the very best at one time or another. His body of work at the high D1 level speaks for itself. So for you to come on here telling him what he should develop or how he should play is just ridiculous. If you knew anything you would know that the only thing one controls is mental attitude and physical effort and Heron’s play is not lacking in either of those departments. He hasn’t suddenly forgotten how to play, HE IS IN A SLUMP.

Tom, everyone is disappointed in the way Heron is playing. I also assume that everyone agrees it clearly has to do with his confidence or current state of mind. I think people are off put by what seems like an overreaction (which we all are guilty of from time to time) but with you it's combined with a tone of certainty or even authority. You're obviously allowed to call someone "fragile" but everyone is allowed to disagree with your characterization. If anything being passive aggressive and catty about not being allowed to say "fragile" seems particularly fragile. State your point, defend it and if people disagree that's fine, move on. Maybe circle back to it and give yourself a pat on the back if results over a larger sample size prove your point.

Based on a larger sample size of Heron's college career it seems like you're overreacting here. Heron has been a highly productive player in 2 of the toughest conferences in the country. Last year he played through injuries while guarding guys he really shouldn't have had to guard. He's kept a positive, grind it out attitude through all of it. So declaring him "soft" and "fragile" seems like an over-reaction to most. He seems to be a good player in a slump which happens fairly often at every level of this sport. And saying the way out of a slump is to develop a step back jumper does seem naive. Generally the advice from brilliant coaches over decades of the sport has been to keep shooting through it and try to get yourself some easy baskets so you can see the ball going through the hoop.

I'm not trying to pick a fight or pile on. I don't think Heron is soft but I actually do agree with some of your points. I just don't think you're reading the room very well.
