Julian Champagnie’s Development

Oh man some of the comments on here labeling people soft. Mustapha Heron Averaged 15.2 Ppg and 6.1 rpg and 16.4 Ppg and 5.3 rpg in two years at Auburn playing D1 basketball of a very good conference. Last season he averaged 14.6 Ppg and 4.7rpg for SJU. Yes, so far this season Mustapha is struggling. So what. It happens.

Yet some of our keyboard warriors and alleged fans label him “soft”. Sad.
Not some, one, so consider the source. No correlation between losing confidence, playing poorly and being soft. A lot of respect for Heron the man cheering and happy for the team success when you know this slump has to be killing him. He is obviously not used to being on the bench but carried himself like the classy, genuine leader he is.
nailed it and he needs a pg

No offense ro Dunn or Rutherford but certain players not named Fig need a guy to get them in a position spot. Now to be fair Heron is in a slump and you see the fake 3 and false move and it's clear he doesn't have confidence IMO in his shot. That being said and it's not just Heron but some players do or not need a good spot. Roberts doesn't need any he is just becoming a junkyard dog. Fig moves around so much he just can just create his own stuff ( not great sometimes ) Moet just knows where to be and creates within his space but Heron is just in a funk. He has limits but when he is on he is awesome
Is that a promise?
Absolutely, he's our best.
He'll come out on fire vs. Wagner, just watch

I am also, i just say how i see it, and won't apologize for it, it's my opinion.
Hopefully by conference play he'll be back, we'll need him.
Yet you apologized in your immediate post to this one!
lol maybe being sarcastic? Do you really think I give a rats ass?
Yeah, I'm sure Moose really cares what Eric Williamson thinks too.
You, yes, Moose no.
Champaigne is my favorite player. Since you know this thread is supposedly about him....
Heron problem is he does not have a strong enough handle and is not athletic enough to finish in traffic at the rim.
He is what he is a solid 14 point per game scorer. Funny people tried to blame Ponds for Heron "struggles" last year. When the only problem is the people miscasting him as a number one option.
Agree. Not So sure about not being athletic enough I just think he’s far too predictable. Hope you stick around this time.

I love Champaigne's play. I really think MA found a diamond in the rough (trying not to jinx anything). And the nice thing about finding a diamond in the rough, is that MA and staff seem to already be showing an ability to actually develop talent and utilize it. I am looking forward to the future and watching these kids grow.

Heron - people need to relax. Slumps happen and if I was to tell you that we just recruited a kid who would play D1 ball for four years and would average 15-16ppg and 5-6rpg for those four years, you would all be pretty stoked about the acquisition.

Anyone consider that our player scouting has improved tremendously? Lavin got so many high recruits but at best they turned out to be solid mostly except Harrison and Harkless who were even better than their gaudy rankings. But that's out of what, like 12 or 13 4 star kids he got? Pointer didn't do a thing until his senior year and he was a Jordan Brand All American I believe in the top 30 (THIRTY!) nationally. That's not too far off McDonald's All American territory. Jordan was a 5 star and showed some glimpses, but never was consistent enough. If CMA can get this much immediately out of 2 and 3 star kids I wonder what he can do with some top 150 4 star guys and the occasional top 100.

Julian has been a revelation. Coach Anderson stated he had been the biggest surprise and he has definitely been better than expected. He was the less recruited between him and his twin and was supposed to go to prep school (not due to grades but to get more exposure and experience).

He has a knack of being in the right place and so far, plays within himself. Doesn't try to do to much and looks like a veteran so far. Of course he is still a freshman and hasn't really faced the hostile fans of opposing teams on the road or BE regular season competition but his demeanor and play on the court so far bodes well.

As bucket head posted the recruitment of Champagnie by MA and his staff is an example of the most critical qualities that a coach needs to be successful.
1 recognize that a recruit, no matter where he stands on the college basketball rating systems has the ability to perform on the college level you are recruiting him to play
2 have the ability to coach that recruit up to that level of play
It is pretty easy to recognize that the level five recruits will be able to contribute right away but what MA has done with Campagnie is a great example of what constitutes good coaching

I think it also has to be good when an under-recruited local Brooklyn kid gets grabbed by the premier local college program and all the local coaches can see instant improvement. It certainly can’t hurt our local recruiting efforts which have struggled in recent years for many reasons. We have another 2 NYC kids coming in next year with a pretty highly ranked Posh and an also under-recruited Wusu. If Wusu ends up coming in an showing similar improvement, it can go a long way to recruiting more and better local players. It’s not just goodwill. It shows the city er have a coach who knows talent and how to coach that talent.
Zach B

Talked to two college coaches who saw Julian Champagnie a lot in high school. Both said he’s improved a lot since getting to St Johns. “He’s better than I thought he was,” one said. #sjubb

Coaching, off season structured training program including conditioning and JC’s buy in is nice story so far with great things to come imo.
I said that he would become a fan favorite because he has great athletic pedigree and is the son of great alum and he may turn out developing faster than his brother. Coach Anderson got a steal in this kid. Add Posh and Wusu and CMA has accomplished more in 4 months in the recruiting of local area players than the last regime did in four years.
All we need is a bona fide 4 or 5 star stud marque player and the team will truly become New York City's team.

I think the last staff got some good players. I also do not believe our players have to come from NY. The problem w the last staffs recruiting was the rosters weren’t balanced and we had no depth. Also the lack of a big man was inexcusable.

And seldom fared well in early signing period, resulting often in mad scramble in Spring.

FYI, in Fort Myers Tip-Off final Tournament MVP Justin Champagnie had 21 points to lead Pitt over Northwestern. The twins both surprising out of the gate.

Love Champ...he has a lot of skill for a freshman. That being said, he needs to work on his 3 PT shot. Too often this year we have guys wide open for 3's and they seem to get knocked down at a 25% clip. I literally just checked his stats and it was 25% on the dot...wow lol. Anyway, most of his 3's are lined up beautifully, however he doesn't have enough arc to make them consistently. He squares his shoulders well and the shots are always right there, but too strong most of the time. We need our guys to make open 3's at a 35%+ clip at a minimum if we are going to have a chance for real success either this year or within the next few years.

Are you the John Fanta who broadcasted our game last week ?

Still have to see him against BE competition of course, but I like what I see so far.
