Talked to two college coaches who saw Julian Champagnie a lot in high school. Both said he’s improved a lot since getting to St Johns. “He’s better than I thought he was,” one said. #sjubb

Coaching, off season structured training program including conditioning and JC’s buy in is nice story so far with great things to come imo.

A few of us ran into him after the Saturday game. He was very gracious as are almost all the guys on our recent teams. I think this guy is still growing.

Coaching or Talent is an age old question. The answer of course is that no coach can win without talent but the idea that talent is independent of coaching is a total falacy, Our last group of coaches brought in some talented players, but it is likely that better coaching would have led to more success as a team and probably as individuals as well.

What I like that I have seen from the current coaching regime so far, is that it looks like they can recruit a player, that was probably underrecruited, like Champagnie and harness his talents so that he can blossom into a player who can shine. Our current roster includes: Josh Roberts, Marcellus Earlington and David Caraher who were all recruited by the previous regime. This year so far they have been able to show off their talent. It is unclear that this would have happened if it were not for our current set of coaches.

To me this bodes well for the futures of our players and the program too. I think it means that when we recruit a player in the future that player development will be a more significant part of the equation for that player's success. That can only be a good thing both from both a player and program point of view..

Just my take.... nothing against Heron (even though he's playing very poorly so far), but I think Champagnie, right now, is the 2nd best player on the team after LJ. He just makes winning plays, and has a very balanced arsenal. His shot needs to improve, but I like the mechanics of his shooting motion, so I don't see that being a problem as he develops.

Ultimately, by his junior year I see him being the type of player that Butler/Xavier/Creighton/etc. get as a 3 star recruit who ends up being a star player that SJU fans say, "Why does SJU never get this type of player!?"

Twin comparison:

Julian 11.3 pt/gm 7.4 rebounds/gm
Shooting 49%

Justin 10.8 pt/gm 5.7 rebounds/gm
Shooting 43%

Yes I have too much time on my hands.

Oops, my “crappy” mistake :)

I’d give the nod slightly to Josh Roberts ahead of Julian because he is also such a menace at the defensive end. That said, they’re both excellent young players and different styles as well. Both are going to be huge parts of what we do moving forward.

Did Pitt try to recruit both of them?? It appeared from all the HS accolades that Justin was getting the best of them. Maybe Julian has something to prove. Either way the comparison will be interesting to follow since these twins appear to be "identical".

Two savvy players. Watched Pitt a few times and one difference is Justin is a wing, while Julian spends more time on interior. For young guys both really have a nose for the ball & rebound well.

I didn't think much of his signing given that most recruiting sites didn't even bother ranking him (and those who did ranked him as 3 stars or worse). Also he wasn't recruited by high majors. I'm very happy to be wrong. He's exactly the type of under the radar player we've never gotten in the past.

Josh Roberts also was ranked #272 nationally but has greatly outperformed that ranking. Caraher was #311. Earlington was #520. Over the past 8/9 years we've more often than not had starters primarily in the top 100 range. Just shows that there's a lot more to recruiting than just the numbers game.

I said that Julian is the 2nd best after Saturday's loss, and got killed for it. Unlike Heron though, he's never a no ahow, every game he's getting his.
Heron is soft, the kid has major talent and is a senior, you'd think he 'd bring it every game.
People were saying last year when he'd have poor games: "oh the staff isn't coaching him up", but now we have a real staff, and still no shows from him.
We know he's better than this, just hopefully he toughens up for his nba draft stock and for the team.

Heron is soft? Disagree. He's had a couple of bad games.

Skill and ability wise, he’s your best player bar none. He’s just pressing. Has to learn how to score in spots. Take the open shot instead of passing it up and taking more difficult shots.

That’s the difference between him now, and earlier. Like that he’s not jacking up threes, but he has to take the open shots the offense presents for him. Maybe bring him off the bench next game to ease up the pressure. MA will do it. Ultimately Heron will be fine.

Love how Champagnie stays within the confines of his game. Has a feel on the floor to be in the right spots at the right time, and more than often makes the right decisions. As you guys can see, this system allows a vast amount of different offensive skillsets to be displayed in a game. Julian knows what his role is, and plays to his strengths. Only going to develop more as the time passes, game by game.

Paul has a quote to the effect "Never attribute to malice that which can be explained by stupidity" as the tag of his posts. I would suggest that a similar approach would be "never attribute to character that which can be attributed to not yet adapted to changed circumstances." Heron played as one of three quick release three point shooters last year and with the two others gone, he is the away from the basket option on which defenses key. I look forward to some pick and roll and give and go between him and Steere. Roberts and Champagnie are clearly the future and with Steere and Moore already in place, St. John's as an undersized team will be a thing of the past, but Roberts and Champagnie don't yet catch the ball very well in low post traffic.

Could it have been crappy coaching? Just wonder how sampson, pointer, dlo, Sanchez and others. Mullins kids, ponds, clark, simon, all have done if they had cma and staff coaching them.h
Bet ya pressy is a huge part of roberts, champ and earlinton emergence.

We also have not had interior guys like Josh & Julian who have good hands In quite a while. Both play two man game & catch well. Posh will enjoy that next season.

Disagree with your last thought. The way both those guys have caught passes and finished down low has almost made me forget about Obekpa. Good hands!

Curious did you watch SJU last year?
