Johnnies Tidbits

John Fanta

A clear takeaway: St. John’s 6-foot-6 freshman Rafael Pinzon has shined in the preseason. Mike Anderson: “When guys are pressing him, he takes it to another level. He handles pressure, he’s a capable scorer. He’s had a really good camp.” #SJUBB

Julian Champagnie: “Tareq (Coburn) is our best shooter.”
Mike Anderson on the difference for St. John’s: “It’s been nice to be able to send the ball inside and see results.”

Red Storm have size that they haven’t possessed in recent seasons - Purdue transfer Aaron Wheeler, Fordham transfer Joel Soriano will make an immediate impact.

It has been a long time since SJU has any decent big man play and you can go back to the installation of the three point shot and I doubt SJU ever had three players who could all shoot close to forty per cent from three. SJU has been built to score off their pressure defense and their half court play was always inferior.
That could change this year. If Soriano can score with his back to the basket and Champagnie, Smith and Coburn can shoot as expected from outside SJU could have a decent half court offense. I would love to see these four on the court at the same time.
If the opposition can’t handle the pressure then use that strategy but if they have the talent to overcome the pressure then utilize this inside, out half court offense which SJU hasn’t had in many a year.

JPM114 who knows this man well tells me how hard he worked all summer and unlike many kids will accept the challenge of redshirting maturely and prepare for his shot in the future, dying breed imo;

That contraption around the basket has got to help you concentrate on the rim in addition to its purpose of collecting the basketballs.

Not just collecting them, but shooting them back to you so you can keep shooting.  Also forces you to shoot with some arc on your shot.  Guy next door to me has one for his son.  Kid is 13 and is a light out shooter.  Puts up at 200 shots/day and does it quickly because he can do it alone and never has to chase his ball

Two former Johnnies go against each other

Greg Williams Jr. scored 18 points and Louisiana broke it open in the second half on the way to a 66-45 win on Friday night.Up 29-23 at halftime, the Ragin' Cajuns (2-0) turned a 39-36 lead with 8:27 remaining into a 54-39 advantage in just under a five-minute span.Jordan Brown scored 11 with nine rebounds and Kobe Julien scored 10.Isaih Moore scored 19 shooting 7 for 11 and Tae Hardy 14 for the Golden Eagles (1-1).

Greg played 34 minutes.

18pts, 7ast, 4rbs    shot 4-of-7 from three.

I believe he is seeing time at PG.  Good luck to this kid.

I heard that parking at UBS will cost up to $50, depending on proximity to the entrance.  Anyone have knowledge on this?  I saw that there is a $5 surcharge if parking is not prepaid.
Maybe Uber is the way to go.

Greg, healthy, is an upper-echelon if not borderline star at that level IMO.  Hope he has a fantastic season.

Actually think Moore at that level is also a star-type player, if he can keep his head on straight.
