Jermaine Lawrence

Interesting take on Jermaine Lawrence's decision to leave Cincy:

"There were rumblings after the season that Jermaine was unhappy with his role on the team this year.

The nub of the issue would appear to be about the position that Lawrence was playing for the Bearcats. In his heart of hearts it seems that Lawrence views himself as a small forward, and wants to play as a small forward. The staff sees him as a power forward and wants him to develop in that direction. It would appear that Jermaine is convinced that he is the next Kevin Durant, and will do his best to go somewhere that will let him try to be the next KD. That's ultimately what this is about."

We need a small forward, but question is whether he really is better placed as a power forward. He's 6' 9".
I guess get him in the door first and then worry about it.

If he wants to be a SF, Lavin is his guy.
Me, I'll pass. Sampson changed the way I look at combo forwards...what a horrible experiment that turned out to be. Never again.
These kids are nuts. Embrace the PF spot and go from there. Moe Harkless played freaking center and he just missed the lottery.

Can't do anything and not available until he gets his release.

If and when that happens, agreed. Would be nice to get another city kid and continue to rebuild our frontcourt.

One thing to note, Lawrence changed his twitter bio from "Bearcat Nation" to "NY born and raised"

For those of us in the business of psychoanalyzing teenage utterances this is a good omen.

Unless he is transferring to manhattan or iona.

I am not familiar with the transfer process. If a player wants his release and the coach has exhausted every chance to keep him, does the college hold the final say?

I don't love that but we have some big bodies on the roster now. As long as other people hit the glass and defend the big men we can have him as a sf.

Or Seton Hall. But he'd have some stiff competition there from their new recruits.

Really agree with that last piece. The college game is so perimeter-oriented anyway, it doesn't really matter what "position" you are defined as, with your Harkless example being a perfect one. At a minimum, 1-4 spend a majority of their time facing the basket.

On top of that, whether you are a 3 or a 4, in terms of getting to the next level you are often times better dominating to the best of your ability - and not worrying about how you dominate. When you worry about the how, sometimes you just call attention to what you can't do and it takes away from what you can.

Take Jakarr for example. He likely would have been better served spending this season terrorizing the rim, showcasing his quick hops on the offensive glass and ability to use his length and athleticism in transition. Make the jumper out to 15 feet (which he can) enough to get NBA teams thinking that with work they can extend him to 20 feet, at least enough that it is worth taking a shot on his length and athleticism.

By spending so much of this season - especially early - floating on the perimeter all he did was highlight how he's not ready to do that, and as a consequence he often looked less impressive than simply sticking to what he does well.

Hope we get Jermaine. Would be a tremendous add.

Paultz said manhattan is in play and I heard that from another poster as well.

My understanding is that a school can't stop a player from leaving and going somewhere else. But the old school CAN stop a player from getting a scholarship at the new school, if the old school chooses to go down that road. So, hypothetically, Cincy could say to Jermaine Lawrence "You want to go St John's? Fine. But we're not allowing them to grant you a scholarship, you'll have to pay your own way."

well said. bottom line it is a team game. you play well within the team for the team and let that do the talking. these kids so worried about showcasing themselves instead of playing as a member of a team, are invariably destined for D-league. Some good examples of being a star who let the game come instead of showcasing themselves: Wiggins at Kansas and Criston at Xavier

What about the coaches who allow them to do so?
