Jermaine Lawrence, PF (Cincinnati)

@Coast2CoastHoop: St John's had Steve Lavin and Tony Chiles watching Jermaine Lawrence, Moustapha Diagne and Bryce Aiken of Pope John (NJ).

Who are the other players being watched? Diagne, Aiken???

thanks

Diagne is a'14 6'9 PF. Not getting much attention according to Rivals but he could blow up playing alongside Lawrence.

Aiken is a '16 PG. I've seen him getting some attention. I've heard Andre Barrett comparisons. He seems to be legit although it's rather early.

I know most of you pay no attention to stars or top 100 or whatever, but FYI Cincy has 3 stars coming at best and not 1 top 100 player as of right now. Without Lawrence, it's hard to imagine them being any better than say Seton Hall right now.

Cronin has recruited JUCOs pretty well. And Cincy has been able to sustain their rankings and advance in the NCAA tourney. Give them their due credit.

I do give them credit, but replacing Gates, Kilpatrick, Wright, etc. with 3 star talent more than likely means a sizable step backwards. Of course this is irrelevant if Cincy somehow nabs a few 4 or even 5 star players i.e. Lawrence, but given the very negative outlook for their program's athletic department at least as of right now I wouldn't be shocked if their recruit quality takes a hit. The only reason this wouldn't matter to Lawrence IMO is if he sees himself as a 1 and done which is of course possible and he still gets to play most of the old Big East powers. If he is not a 1 and done though which is just as likely, he will be essentially marooned on an island with mid major scraps left around with real meaningful basketball being played elsewhere. It will be interesting to see where he decides to go...I don't see any instances where he can say Cincy is a better choice other than the very warm reception he got on his visit, but at the same time it worries me that he keeps pushing back his visits with us. We shall see.

Update: After some digging online, there is a rumor that his recruitment has been "very dirty". This rumor comes from a guy on twitter named Ari Roth and he only has 325 followers so I assume he has no clout, but still interesting to think about.

I guess you missed how good Lawrence said he felt after Cronin ad Savino watched him work out last week.

As far as dirty recruiting goes, both schools were involved heavily with Obekpa and I'm sure Lawrence's handlers aren't as shady as Obekpa's were. It'll play itself out. We've heard these 'rumblings' before about Lawrence and his advisors.

But how much value does "I felt good" have? There's coach speak and then there's recruit speak. I don't ever recall a recruit being dead honest saying "I didn't enjoy my visit here" or "I didn't care that this coach was here".

by the way Honeymooner fans, you probably know (better than I) Jackie Gleason was born and raised in dear old Brooklyn -

his father was a ne're-do-well and abandoned Jackie and his mother - the mother worked as a token collector on the subways - so one "bad" thing Jackie would never do as a boy was jump the turnstyles -

my WWII verteran father who worked for BF Goodrich fixing city bus tires one worked in a NYC Transit garage near Sunset Park and Grenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn -

that garage is now named after Jackie Gleason - Ralph Kramden - bus driver extraordinaire

maybe if Jackie were still alive he would do a Jack Nicholson/Lakers thing with Your Brooklyn Nets!
Who knows for sure.

all the best

Re: the Honeymooners, one time me and my brother passed by that NYC Transit depot in Sunset Park and we're looking at this bus driver crossing the street. The driver looked like a twin of Ralph Kramden. Same weight, height,, same black hair and he wore his uniform like Ralph did. It was like seeing his ghost. I couldn't beleive my eyes. Imagine driving by the Jackie Gleason bus terminal and you see a bus driver who looked just like Ralph. I wanted to open the window and yell out Hey Ralphie Boy. Amazing sight !! My grandparents lived nearby.

I'd take the recruit's words from his own mouth rather than some blogger or sports writer trying to put spin in an article.

These kids tend to be attention whores. Never know the effect it has on each individual.

Let me nip this one in the butt. No more honeymooners talk. Keep it about Jermaine.

Unless you have some particular anatomical interests, I think the phrase is "nip in the bud", as in not let flower.

Frontrunner for Lawrence?

http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/mens-college-basketball/rumors/post?id=386

According to the folks at ESPN Recruiting, Jermaine Lawrence is one of the top unsigned players left in the 2013 class. The forward, who had been suffering from a wrist injury, has cut his list to three programs: UNLV, Cincinnati, and St. John's. Dave Telep, Paul Biancardi, Reggie Rankin, and Adam Finkelstein all believe the forward will ultimately commit to the Red Storm, but there are still those who think Cincinnati is currently the favorite in his recruitment. If he does become a Bearcat, assistant Darren Savino deserves a plethora of credit; the former Rutgers assistant has been Cincy's link to the NYC-area over the past few years, and was crucial in the commitments of Jermaine Sanders and Shaquille Thomas.

However, we have to wonder if Lawrence will leave the Big Apple. Lawrence recently took the court for the first time in his senior season, and both Tony Chiles and Steve Lavin trekked to New Jersey to watch Lawrence in action (per Seve Cousins of Zagsblog.com). The SJU coaching staff has clearly made Lawrence -- along with Rysheed Jordan and Khadeen Carrington (in the 2014 class) -- a recruiting priority. While some believe Mick Cronin and his staff have the advantage, Lawrence -- like Chris Obekpa -- could very well play his home games at the Carnesecca Arena next season.

Boy, do I hope that this guy is correct!!

We all do and our win against Seton Hall today can only help our cause.
I hope he was at MSG today.

He wasn't.

@AdamZagoria: Pope John coach Jason Hasson and 2015 PF Moustapha Diagne and 2016 PG Bryce Aiken are at today's #stjbb game at MSG. No @mainestory though

Thanks 98 for the info, too bad.
I hope his coach liked what he saw and how Jermaine could fit in and help this team.

I agree.
Sell him on the fact that having a guy like Obekpa patrolling the rim would only make his life that much easier in the front court.

If I were Lavin, I would let the Pope John coach borrow my wife for the night to lure Lawrence. I kid, I kid. But really, he needs to come here.

You would think any kid would jump at going to the garden to see a Big East game, unless he has already made up his mind and doesn't want to give us false hope.

Or he had homework. Or a family party to go to. Or a multitude of other reasons.

Lets not overreact here and think we know what was going on when NONE of us do.

Dude just got back on the court after his wrist injury. Hes probably messing around in the gym or doing whatever it is 17-year-olds do. Hes been to plenty of our games. I wouldn't care too much about this.

Overreact? Wow, didn't say I know why he wasn't there, merely throwing out a possible reason.

You could have accompanied your negative thoughts with a positive one too, right? I don't think I came up with two out there ideas. There are tons of scenarios to play out thats all I'm saying
