Jamal Branch to STJ

Sounds like a very good get for us and gives us some strength/depth at PG that we haven't seen for a while.

Congrats to the staff and welcome to JB.

A great pickup by the staff as he really fills a key void. Much easier to pickup a big man or two now with 3 very talented guards in the fold who can all distribute well. Also happens to be a very good defensive player who fits perfectly into the system we hope to play.

Thanks for the clips moose. Kid has excellent handle. Doesn't try to play above the rim as a PG much like Barkley, although is taller and has more flash to his uptempo game it seems. Excellent passing and body control much like D'Angelo does. Both similarly crafty on the court. We'll have a very smart and dynamic backcourt with those two.

Is it me or am I seeing him shoot lefty AND righty?

From the field, or just layups? I didn't notice but have to check again. Kid has great vision though. He will help us a ton on the break which we love to do.  We need an Obekpa blocking shots back in that zone defense now, to allow us to gamble the way we love to do... Can't wait to see what else Lavin can do with this class. Great beginning.

Fantastic pickup! I had a feeling after those twitter comments that if he was going to commit he'd do it before the Maryland visit. The time factor definitely played a factor as it should. Before he even steps on the floor at MSG or don a SJU uniform he will already make three major contributions. He will make our guys better from practicing against them. If you have a top notch defender dogging you all practice...you know you're going to develop another dimension. That guy will probably be D'Angelo and with that, he may become unstopable. Secondly, guys want to play with a point guard like that. Thirdly, if Lavin can get him to commit in the middle of all this cloudiness about his future as coach, then that speaks volumes IMO. We know he's a closer, and one fo the best at that, but geez! If you're Gathers, Sampson, and even Wood...you can't tell me you don't have second thoughts after hearing this.

icing on the cake. I can't wait to see this backcourt of branch and harrison. talk about dynamic. who is going to have a comparable backcourt to stop these two by the time they are juniors.
welcome jamal. the next few years are going to be a blast.

guess the icing doesn't make sense if you don't know there is a cake...sorry the cake was the win over cinci and my son's wedding going off as hitch free as a wedding can go.

Except the marriage thing... :p ;)

Remember the posters that insisted that only "a New York guy" could be a successful recruiter at St.John's?

Today St. John's coach from California received a commit for the transfer from Texas to play along with fellow Texan Harrison.

In Lavin I Trust.

Good point Otis.

And I think it just shows that this staff is going to find talent wherever it lies. It's great to have a NYC flavor to the team, but Lav and Co. aren't limited by location.

For ever stud player from New York that wants to leave home there are 10 like studs that want to play in Madison Square Garden and attend school in the city that never sleeps.

Stud players want to play for a winner whoever he his. Lavin is a winner.

To me, more than anything, is the fact that he can join the team right away. Bond with these guys, get on the same page in practice.

The extra six months could be huge depending on how many true newcomers show up on campus in the fall.

I noticed the same thing, I still don't know which is his dominant hand.

I thought he was a lefty at first, but he's clearly a righty. He looks like he can handle with both hands, but a lot of the layups in the highlights were taken with his right when left would have been the better option. He's got a slow looking outside shot, but he's hitting a respectable 33.3% which is more than enough to keep the defense honest.

He looks like he'll excel at penetrating and finishing through contact...which makes his lack of FT attempts at A&M seem a bit strange.

Kid looks like the mirror image of Jason Hart to me. Scary.

He's a get it and go guy...he'll be a perfect fit for our zone. We now have two lockdown defenders at the guard spots and two lockdown defenders at the wing positions. Great, Great, Great pickup. Not a superstar, but a guy that fills a huge void. Good day to be a Johnnies fan...hopefully this opens up the floodgates again.

Agree wholeheartedly, but also suspect that in the future you'll see more and more NY stud players consider staying home to play for Lavin and their hometown school. Lavin has changed the perception of St. John's basketball.

Glad we got what seems like a talented PG, but it has to be asked:

whose to say this kid isnt another Nuri??? After all, the kid did bail on his team only a few games into his college career like Nuri did.  I reallyyyyy hope the staff did its research with this one.

Maybe he just couldn't take the coach's kid screaming at all the games :)

LMAO! That screaming was unbearable wasn't it.

The NY kids will follow. I've heard as such for 13' and 14' but that is more because of the culture that Lavin and his staff changed here. Like I said many times prior. SJU scholarships were worth nil. Now top 50 players competing for them and Lavin would rather run a few men short than fill the roster with marginal guys. It sends a message. NY kids want to come here. Only good ones now thanks to Lavin and Co. This summer people will look back and laugh at how many thought this was a horribly "down" year for our recruiting.

Hard to say if he's a superstar just yet. Haven't seen enough of what he can do. Top 50 player is right in hat range though, where odds favor a very, very good player.

This season Branch will make Phil Green a better player by better practice competition.
