Jamal Branch to STJ

“I chose St. John’s because I think it’s a perfect fit for me,” Branch told SNY.tv by text.

“They have a great coaching staff who I feel can help me a lot with my game. Those guys are like teachers in a classroom but teachers of the game. They know so much about the game.”...

Can you imagine what it was like for him watching the game yesterday with Coach Lavin---obviously he was impressed.

Great get and welcome St. John's, Jamal

Definitely a shrewd move by Lavin, who in this case, took advantage of his unique situation. I doubt any coach has ever been able to sit with a recruit and comment on a game in which his team is playing as it unfolds live.

To me, more than anything, is the fact that he can join the team right away. Bond with these guys, get on the same page in practice.

The extra six months could be huge depending on how many true newcomers show up on campus in the fall.

+1

Come December next year, he'll know the system as well as anyone. Not much rust to wear off.

Great point, and i'm sure it helped that the one player on the team that he knows, dominated the game.

Posted before that we needed two more players, a PG and a C. Sounds like between Branch and Greene we will be covered at the PG, now we need a C and we can start thinking about making some noise next year.

Agree that PG and C were by far our biggest needs. I really didn't know where we were going to get a PG, but Lavin answered that call with a top 50 kid who won't be green when he takes the court next season. To put things into perspective, there was only 1 PG in the 2011 class that the Big East landed that was ranked higher than Jamal Branch, which was Ryan Boatright. I think Boatright is more of a scoring guard though.

Now time to bring in a few big guys. Whatever else Lavin lands is gravy. I think we're more than fine "only" bringing in 3-4 guys in 2012 if they are the right guys. I don't think Lavin will save ships though, if the guys he wants are available. If an injury or two happens, we're back in the same boat.

I'd also like to see a quick 5'10" shooter on the end of the bench instead of a walkon. Might be one in the area who'd be happy with a backup role. They all can't start but we need to add threes to the mix.

Don't want a 5'10 shooter. I wouldnt mind having a legit 6-4 to 6-6 type shooter that we have seen on mid majors forever as our last and final scholarship player.

Agree with Moose. Need a 6'4+ specialist that is pure shooter to space that floor.

Tremendous get, echoing everyone else's comments that it is so for multiple reasons. Not just because we get the terrific talent of Branch, but it also helps stabilize the immediate future of the program for the current players, recruits, and general perception alike.

I apologize if this has already been covered but was this the mystery transfer? It seemed to me that the mystery recruit/transfer was in the context of being eligible for 2nd semester, but since it appears that may not be happening and Branch is now here, was he it?

But can Lavin recruit 125th Street? ;)
I heard Bill Clinton recruits all the best "talent" round that way!

Jamal holds down the most important position next year. Now Coach gets 1 to 3 more 4/5s, and the talent train keeps rolling hard
