JaKarr Sampson

Don't think anybody posted this yet but Dave Telep had an article on Jakarr on ESPN Insider today..

http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/dave-telep/post/_/id/1039/friars-gators-next-up-to-host-sampson

The gist is that Jakarr is down to Providence, Florida, Kansas, Baylor, and St Johns. (No surprises there, although no Louisville anymore)
And that he's going to look to take 2 more official visits: Florida and Providence.
Sampson says he couldn't decide if he had to choose today, although Cooley has been recruiting him the hardest he says.
Telep's take is:
"You get the feeling that Sampson could be the kind of guy who hits it off with the players and makes his decision based on gut feel. All of the teams on his list like to score, some would use his length better than others but each could use a guy with his skill set."

And it ends with some direct quotes from Jakarr about what he's looking for:
“It has to be a perfect fit,” Sampson said. “That’s what got to be perfect. If it’s not right you’ll be unhappy. The ideal fit is a team that will let me play defense, get after it, play up tempo and let me get after.”

“That’s the tough part. You start looking at the rosters and where you can see yourself fit in: who got who, who’s coming in behind you. I’m a competitor so I don’t think about that aspect a lot but it kind of do think about it.”

Check out the last quote
I always had a gut feeling that Gathers' commitment contributed to Sampson's decision to decommit from St John's
Looking at our current roster, he would be an ideal fit and would get a lot of playing time
C'mon JaKarr, pull the trigger!!

Agree. If he's saying things like that then it tells me he's having second thoughts about Kansas because of all the forwards they're stacking up.
I think it's a good sign for us, but Providence as well.

I hope this is one of those rare occasions where a player recommits to his original school after opening things up. Doesn't happen to often but we could sure use a turn of good luck.

When Gathers committed to Baylor his coach said Baylor recruited him the hardest. Now we hear this "Sampson says he couldn't decide if he had to choose today, although Cooley has been recruiting him the hardest he says."

My only concern is that Lavin and Chiles are underestimating the competition and that Jakarr is just jerking us around. It was Lavin that recruited him the hardest when he committed in the first place. That a coach on the road to recovery from surgery is still after him has not seemed to impress him enough! WTF the does this kid think he has that does not stink? I want loyal kids not some sneaky teen looking to get laid on every college visit. If the friendships he formed at SJ when he was with the current players was not enough...screw him!

Guess if he comes, you won't be at the welcome party? Only kidding!

If yu watch that 5-star video, Jakarr says something to the effect that Cooley is a hard recruiter...BUT. It was interesting to hear the "but" after it and said to me that he acknowledges Cooley has worked his butt off.."but" I'm not going there. I still think SJU will be the place for a multitude of reasons.

+100 Marcus! Almost there IMHO!!

No, I would not be at the party:)
I look at this way, Jakarr was given all the opportunity in the world to make things right. After attending an elite New England Prep school he still needed summer courses. Ruled ineligible, he returns to his prep coach and decommits within a week. He needed another year of prep school and now is all over the map visiting other schools, none of which offer him the PT that he would get at SJ yet he is still jerking Lavin around by saying "if he had to decide today, he couldn't" after Lavin has pursued him for two years now and he gives props to scar-head for pursuing him the hardest??? Screw him! I would take Orlnado Sanchez over him at this point.

Sanchez going to Providence IMO

Maybe he is just tired of everyone asking him what school he is going to choose and gave a pat answer. Relax you seem to be taking this a bit to hard.

Tasteless? in what way?? maybe you should re-read some much earlier threads here for a clue. You just do not get it! the kid is jerking us around and you obviously find that tasteful? I bend over only once.
Have you seen two players pursued harder than Gathers and Sampson by SJ and be insulted by them by being described as not recruiting them as hard as Baylor or Providence?? Whatever you are drinking, give it up.

*******
I agree 1972. But let's lighten this up a bit. We all want the same thing (I think) which is an ongoing talented team - which we will have with or wihtout Sampson.

As far as Orlando Sanchez, how about Mark Sanchez as a fall back position.

Also this brain of mine was thinking, if they still had freshmen teams like in the "old days" of Lew Alcinder (Kareem) and before, how lovely this year would have been for our Five!

all the best

I understand your argument, and you're not wrong. I think in most businesses it's probably the right approach. But this is a part of college sports, It sucks, but every program does this.

We still need players, and with only 7 guys on scholarship, we can't let our feelings get hurt if a recruit doesn't sign right away.

And even if we only had 2 scholarships available, I still think coach and staff would treat Jakarr the same way they are now. There's no hurt feelings if he doesn't sign with us right away, but there's no promises we aren't recruiting somebody else in the meantime.

So just because Jakarr hasn't picked us yet, that wouldn't make me stop recruiting him. You let go of the kids who have criminal issues, have a history of insubordination, or who's character is so off the charts that it isn't worth working with them. But guys who take their time or decommit and consider other options? That doesn't spoil them. It's just a part of the business unfortunately. In my opinion anyway.

Just curious, who pays for airline tickets, accommodations etc. when they go on these visits?

Each recruit gets 5 Official visits, the schools can pay your way for those.
If they take any unofficials though, the player is supposedly just stopping bye on his own, so he drove/flew there on his own dime.

So how many "official" visits is Sampson taking advantage of over the course of two freakin seasons?? Whatever, I do not like kids that decommit and put the coach they signed with originally true the ringer knowing what that coach has been through to get him.

Don't think he took any last year. Don't think he ever visited STJ officially.

Hey 72-why didn't JaKarr just put his recruitment in your hands and let you pick the school for him?

Newsflash: He picked a school! He decommitted from that school.
Bamfan must be originally from Brooklyn. This is called a recruiting "do-over".
I do not do "do-overs"! It is counterproductive in the long run.
It is very rare for a decom to recommitt to the same school.
There is so much BS surrounding this one player that I frankly do not give a crap about him. So far he has given props to Kansas..almost verballed on his visit. Told Baylor they are in his top 5, loves Cooley because he shows him so much love and will just love sunny Gainesville soon. He has not said very many nice things about Lav or SJ lately.
Hey, but what do I know? An "insider" on JJ said he ruled SJ out a week ago. Another "insider" on JJ said he was announcing "something" after his last game.
I love kids that love St. John's. Right now, Jakarr does not qualify.......just as he did not in September.
If he swallows some SJ love potion and signs I will be happy but he is putting Lav through the ringer.

Welcome aboard Mr. Sampson.. ;) ... just step right up & take ur guarenteed starting spot on a top 15 team next year. B)

sorry guys but agree with class of 72. We need guys here that LOVE this program like we do. Looka t Garrett, Harrison, Dom, Greene, and Gift. These guys seem to LOVE this program. Amir was our biggest advocate. Kids that are not fully committed to SJU will never be. To come play at SJU was always about the passion and fire on the court. If they de-commit, well, move on. I agree, we are not some Div III no name school. Lav is a wiz and he will get another kid somewhere, he'll turn over some stone and find him. In Lav we trust, remember ? If Moe stays, we need another big and a SFwith the addition of Branch. If he goes, we need two legit bigs and a SF. Just my thoughts....Go Johnnies !!
