Now some readers here on redmen understand my constant criticism of Lavin's recruiting approach for 2014. It was never about filling 3 scholarships that belonged to Primo, Marco and Gift. It was about recruiting for the players with pipe dreams of the NBA, unhappy campers or underachievers. Beyond the three seniors, we have three others that fit my above derisive comment. They include Harrison, Sampson and Obekpa.
NOW, the worst case scenario becomes a possibility with Six (6) possible vacancies. Sampson already made his statement: I would rather not waste my time in class or have any one-to-one coaching by Rico Hines at St. John's and take a long shot chance in hell that an NBA team selects me in the 2nd round.
Good luck with that decision Jakarr but I will miss your height next year. Your "me first" game mentality was a major setback for this team this year.
D'Angelo Harrison? A wild card if there ever was one! Kid is totally unpredictable. Obekpa? Possibly uncoachable.
So, when some of the folks here were raving about the great recruiting wizard we have I was seeing red flags all over the recruiting map. Staff not attending big local games. No one on the JC trail. Our current biggest target is a 4 year project.
We now have, at minimum, 4 scholarships, two of which were starters that may go to walk-ons! The great recruiter? He is looking for a contract extension so the players that are NBA caliber that are on his radar know he will be here for at least 4 more years. LOL! Someone tell the wizard that most of his players are not hanging around for 4 years so his agent better come up with a better reason for an extension. NBA players only stay a couple of years. Even players that are not NBA caliber like Sampson.
What major program paying a coach over 2 million $ has no recruits coming in with 4 vacancies? The great recruiter, Steve Lavin.
