Jakarr Declaring?

Hope this doesn't negatively impact De La Rosa's upcoming decision. If anything, we need his size more than ever.

Nah, it isn't gonna hurt us. We're certainly gonna need his size and rebounding.

I hope our guards are doing lots of planking. 'Cause they are gonna need strong backs to carry this team. Still some time left to get in on transfers and kids who get out of prior commitments.

Guarantees we will continue to see more of the 3 guard which is not good news...means Greene continues to get starter minutes

If you look at the big picture though, this was predictable...
It's not like we haven't been saying since he got here that Sampson might leave after his soph or jr season. Now, we debated whether or not he SHOULD, but there was always the possibility that this was going to happen.

I think we all just assumed it would be after a better season (for individual and team) than his one.

Pretty sure Lavin will use Sampson leaving as an excuse for losing next season.

I get frustrated but generally fall on the pro side when it comes to what Lavin has accomplished...But, I don't want to hear excuses next year...Unlike many posters, I think it was unreasonable to expect NCAA bid in 1st two years of this recruiting class (post Hardy era) so I did't get too crazy...thought this year should have been a given but "it is what it is"...and Lavin didn't get as much out of the kids as he could/should have...so, color me a bit frustrated but still in the boat...but, don't want to hear about having to wait another 3 years to sniff tournament...was expecting much more for next year...2015 class better be a smash hit or even the most ardent supporters will be restless

This make little sense. Any chance he was not going to be eligible?

I dont think he would declare unless he or his agent already have an idea from nba contacts where he might fall in the draft. So I am sure he knows what he is doing

Am I the only one who isnt too upset about this? Very talented player but too often too selfish and hurt us as much as he helped us. Considering we dont lose anyone else I am positive about the roster next year ( not about the coach). Im sure Lavin will find some players this spring, I would guarantee it. Its time for christian Jones baby.

I forgot to add, Wish you nothing but the best Jakarr! You stayed true to SJU despite the rise fiasco. I will root for you throughout the rest of your career!

Now some readers here on redmen understand my constant criticism of Lavin's recruiting approach for 2014.  It was never about filling 3 scholarships that belonged to Primo, Marco and Gift.  It was about recruiting for the players with pipe dreams of the NBA, unhappy campers or underachievers.  Beyond the three seniors, we have three others that fit my above derisive comment.  They include Harrison, Sampson and Obekpa.
NOW, the worst case scenario becomes a possibility with Six (6) possible vacancies.  Sampson already made his statement: I would rather not waste my time in class or have any one-to-one coaching by Rico Hines at St. John's and  take a long shot chance in hell that an NBA team selects me in the 2nd round.
Good luck with that decision Jakarr but I will miss your height next year.  Your "me first" game mentality was a major setback for this team this year.
D'Angelo Harrison?  A wild card if there ever was one!  Kid is totally unpredictable.  Obekpa? Possibly uncoachable.
So, when some of the folks here were raving about the great recruiting wizard we have I was seeing red flags all over the recruiting map.  Staff not attending big local games.  No one on the JC trail.  Our current biggest target is a 4 year project.
We now have, at minimum, 4 scholarships, two of which were starters that may go to walk-ons!  The great recruiter?  He is looking for a contract extension so the players that are NBA caliber that are on his radar know he will be here for at least 4 more years. LOL!  Someone tell the wizard that most of his players are not hanging around for 4 years so his agent better come up with a better reason for an extension.  NBA players only stay a couple of years.  Even players that are not NBA caliber like Sampson.
What major program paying a coach over 2 million $ has no recruits coming in with 4 vacancies?  The great recruiter, Steve Lavin.

This is a huge loss to SJU. He's a major talent at the college level, whether he makes the NBA right away or not. He's also been one of the more enjoyable personalities to come along in a while. Good luck Jakarr!

When Felix Balamou is your starting SF, yes, it hurts.

Major talent? I must be missing something.

Lavin will get us at least 3 players this spring/summer. De La Rosa seems almost to be a lock and there will be TONS of transfers as well as JUCO players available

You must have missed his entire first season and a good chunk of this one.

Who cares if he gets us 3 or 7 players if they're not any good?
Delarosa is a project, and it seems unlikely we get the kid from Temple who wants to play in the ACC or big10.
Jucos don't come much more heralded than Sanchez, and how impactful was he in his first year? Early is a very rare exception to the rule.
And there's still the risk of losing more of our guys to draft/transfer.

Hard to be optimistic right now

Sampson not only regressed this season, he played more erratically and hurt the team offensively in many games. How bad did the kid with NBA stars in his head fall? He went from ROY to not making any Big East teams this year! Not even an honorable mention! Had this kid been a realist he would see he needed not just one season, but two, to be an NBA prospect. Even at 21 his physical development has been slow as well as his IQ of the game. The major talent I want to see recruited is Gonzaga like talent, Wisconsin type talent, Villanova type talent and not the haphazard mix of athletes with low BB IQ that cannot shoot. Ben Howland would be a good fit if he would bring Slice along for the ride! Wink!

The kid showed lots of promise and is very athletic. But was nowhere near an impact player at the college level. Guess we have difference of opinion of what qualifies as "a major talent at the college level".
