Jakarr Declaring?

I wouldn't be surprised if his NBA pal from Akron has helped get him the invite. LeBron has some pull. It's good that Karr has a friend like that in his corner.

Without these guys it leaves more room for Karr to make a splash

@WojYahooNBA: Yahoo Sources: Joel Embiid, Jabari Parker will not attend the NBA's Pre-Draft combine this week in Chicago.http://t.co/85bI9Nfj4B

Nope.

Jakarr hasn't been invited.

He's done and it's a shame. Good kid but incredibly naive. Someone should've had him talk to Omar Cook.

@GoodmanESPN: Early entries NOT on NBA combine participant list: Chane Behanan, Sim Bhullar, Eric Moreland, Jakarr Sampson, Roscoe Smith.

He'll still make money, play more games, and get different coaching. If he stays the course and works hard, he'll do a lot better than most St John's graduates in his class.

A number of years ago the NBA rule was once you announced for the draft that was it. Then they relaxed it for the benefit of players like Sampson. The new rule gave players time to reconsider their decision as long as they didn't hire an agent.
This change seemed very fair and yet so many players hook up to an agent immediately and lose that option like Sampson.
He probably would have fallen lower on the draft lists next year but at least he would have the option to return. I can't see why so many players who are not going to be drafted rush to hire an agent.

True.

But the kid has NBA dreams and with another year or 2, NBA talent.

And not making the Combine, he'll have to work even harder. This is a devastating blow for sure.

I'm operating on the theory that he knew full well he wouldn't be drafted. I mean, not one single mock draft service out there had him even remotely close to being drafted. Unless he didn't have an Internet connection, he must have known that and for whatever reason, he consciously made a decision to go D-League / Europe. I wish him well, he seems like a great kid.

His presser was almost Moe's presser verbatim. They asked him what had he been hearing about his spit in the draft. He said anywhere from mid-first round on down.

There's no way he didn't think he wouldn't get drafted.

I think he thought he'd surprise everyone with his uber athleticism and improved range.

Forget the internet. These agents sell kids wolf tickets.

I feel sorry for him.

But this should be a wake up call for Rysheed and Obekpa.

Sadly, everyone think they'll be different.

I totally agree. To me, the decision is so flawed that I wonder if he was going to be academically ineligible for the Fall semester. To be fair, this is pure speculation on my part. I have never heard anyone "in the know" state this.

@WojYahooNBA: Andrew Wiggins has informed the NBA that he has withdrawn from the draft combine in Chicago this week, league source tells Yahoo.

I do, too, dee. He seems to be a terrific young man, and I appreciate that he stuck with us (over Kansas, no less) after having to spend a year in prep school, I appreciate the effort he gave wearing his St. John's uniform, and I wish him nothing but success at the next level. Here's hoping he beats the odds.

Good post. I've thought about this also, and wondered if academics played a part in his decision. Lavin seems pretty focused on looking out for his kid's best interests, as evidenced by recent positive comments by Polee about Lavin continuing to keep in touch with him. Lavin also seems capale of getting into a kid's head and convincing him to stay. In the past year alone, Jordan was rumored to be gone mid-season, and Lavin seems to have helped him get through a difficult personal stretch. Then Obekpa bolts, only to meet with Lavin and allowed to come back. I'm thinking that if there wasn't something else going on with Sampson, Lavin would have convinced him to stay at least one more season.

I disagree with comments that Sampson will do better than most of his SJU classmates. My guess is that if he plays overseas for 15 seasons, he will earn somewhere between $1-3 million total over those 15 years. Chances are he plays less than that. Not horrible pay, but then what?

Beast, there's a lot of speculation in that post.

Maybe he just wanted to go and make some money now. It could be as simple as that. He thinks he can make the NBA and if not, then somewhere else where they will pay him and no more school. He isn't the first to think this way and no matter what we think, 18 - 21 year olds don't necessarily think the same as some of us do, especially when they are D1 athletes.

When you net out the cost of his college degree, and consider that he would only be forfeiting two years of income overseas, it's a very foolish decision. I think that the estimate currently is that a college degree for 2014 grads is worth $800,000 over the course of their lifetime. Playing overseas would by all means be available to him in two years, and with some added bulk and skills he could even have had the potential to be drafted in the NBA's top two rounds. I really am not weighing the benefit to SJU bball - really my concern, like most us of, is all about Jakarr. IT may be noble for him to consider some family needs in terms of what a salary will bring. Way too many college athletes feel pressure from family to make money and share the wealth.
