It's Official - Chris Obekpa to Transfer

Let's move on

I'd really like to move on, but Obekpa's transgressions is directly responsible for Lavin's inability to elevate this program to where it could have been. Imagine what SJU/LAvin's fortune would have been had CO played well down the stretch in 2014 and been a driving force towards the NCAA bid that we lost in the Big East opener to Providence? Or how CO could have been a big factor in an NCAA win vs. SD State?

If just those two things happened, there would be a virtually overwhelming case to retain Lavin after 3 NCAA bids in 5 seasons.

No question, it's all spilled milk, but CO is as responsible as anyone for Lavin's premature departure. It's hard to wish someone well or turn the page when you look at some of his lowlights here.

So in a sense, we owe CO a thank you for being the player he was, otherwise the program would continue to languish for many years to come.

I'm as big a Mullin advocate on Redmen.com as anyone, and have been for years. However, I'm a much bigger advocate of wins, and even in an NCAA tourney year like this past one, have a disdain for large number of empty seats around me. Obekpa and Jordan were problem children, and both undermined the program. Two bids in five years isn't exactly languishing, and we had a great shot at a 3rd. Most fans would sign up for that. I've had season tickets for 36 of the past 37 seasons, and very few on here have been that loyal. The happenings of the past few weeks have certainly reset our program to zero in terms of where Mullin is beginning with usable personnel. In many ways it is comparable to Lavin's second season, but Lavin came in with a seasoned team. Looking FORWARD, next season is a bumpy ride (again), and that's the frustrating part.

I am so happy that Mullin is now the coach. If he can't get it done, no one will. Lavin was smoke and mirrors. His act was getting old. I am glad Obekpa is leaving. I don't believe it will cost us many wins either. Time to move on.

The kid is a head case. If he doesn't want the follow the rules, then he should be gone. He and Jordan would be on this team if they were willing to do the work. They've acknowledged that they won't so let's move on. Better to know this now than in January.

Oh well. Going to be a challenge next year. Maybe we can run and gun and get Rowan on board

I'm not really upset about this because CO was head case but the staff really needs to find another big man for next year.

Beast it was probably going to be an even bumpier ride next season if Lavin was still here.

That saying a lot about a guy who has yet to coach a single college game here. Good riddance to Chris, he doesn't want it enough to be on the court and can't get past the things off the court and attitude adjustments then peace out.

It looks like the Pappa ship has sailed. The problem is, I don't think there are quality bigs for next year left.Best we can hope for IMO is getting Rowan and Mussini and playing a smaller line up.

If players are leaving because CM is too strict or too demanding of accountability, I'm confident we are going to better in the long run.

Making guys responsible is one thing. But in today's day and age with these kids who feel entitled to everything, and usually think very highly of themselves, and actually are extremely talented, they think they can get away with a lot and if they can't they will leave. So being overly "strict" is a slippery slope in today's college game.

Fact of the matter is a lot of the best players, big time players come with extra baggage off the court, so with the star players comes a lot of nonsense, and if we are going to have these recruits then we have to prepare for crap like this to happen.

Why transfer, prob have to sit out a year, then play 1 year?
Doesnt make sense. There is probably more behind the story.

Oh there is. Don't believe everything you read in the papers.
More drama coming but not my place to talk about it. Plus, some of you will acuse me of this and that.
Also, if the moderators don't like my posts why don't you just delete my account? I told you that Lavin was gone/Monasch fired/Obekpa out - posts were either locked or questioned with negativity.

are there ant graduate big men with a year of eligibility left on the board ?

I don't see this happening at most programs that win. In our conference Villanova is a good example.
