@ Jon Rothestein - St. John's big man Chris Obekpa will transfer, per release. One year of eligibility remaining. #sjubb

So Long Farewell

There's a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hall
And the bells in the steeple too
And up in the nursery an absurd little bird
Is popping out to say, "Cuckoo"
Cuckoo, cuckoo
Regretfully they tell us cuckoo, cuckoo
But firmly they compel us
To say, "Goodbye", to you

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, good night
I hate to go and leave this pretty sight

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, adieu
Adieu, adieu, to you and you and you

So long, farewell, au revoir, auf wiedersehen
I'd like to stay and taste my first champagne

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye
I leave and heave a sigh and say "Goodbye", goodbye

I'm glad to go, I cannot tell a lie
I flit, I float, I fleetly flee, I fly

The sun has gone to bed and so must I
So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
Goodbye

So we will have probably the youngest starting lineup and backups... Is it even worth getting season tickets plus the mandatory donation at this point? Why couldn't we hold onto at least 1 of these guys

Let's move on

I'd really like to move on, but Obekpa's transgressions is directly responsible for Lavin's inability to elevate this program to where it could have been. Imagine what SJU/LAvin's fortune would have been had CO played well down the stretch in 2014 and been a driving force towards the NCAA bid that we lost in the Big East opener to Providence? Or how CO could have been a big factor in an NCAA win vs. SD State?

If just those two things happened, there would be a virtually overwhelming case to retain Lavin after 3 NCAA bids in 5 seasons.

No question, it's all spilled milk, but CO is as responsible as anyone for Lavin's premature departure. It's hard to wish someone well or turn the page when you look at some of his lowlights here.

It's going to be a whole new program next season from top to bottom.

A much needed breath of fresh air here.

I'm putting him in my rear view mirror. The soap box doesn't do much for me at this point Beast.

Lavin is responsible for Lavin's departure, which was more "overdue" than "premature." To borrow from Bill Parcells, he shopped for the groceries before he cooked the meal.

As for Obekpa, there's no question that we would have had a better team next year with him on the floor. His apparent departure is a major blow to next year's record. With Jordan and Obekpa, we might have reached 18 wins and been close to .500 in conference. Now winning low double digits and a third of our conference games will be an accomplishment.

Long term, it doesn't much matter. He would have been gone after next year no matter what, and I don't think that the difference between 13 wins and 18 wins next year will affect the ultimate arc of the Mullin tenure.

Not that it's a reason to keep him or Jordan for that matter, but try to remember that when we struggle to a 10-12 win season in 2015-16, which by almost any measure will be a challenging season.

What we have lost in just a few weeks, is sustainability. My guess is that all of the positive glow from the Mullin hiring will now not result in ticket sales surging upward with a team likely to be sub .500 overall and by all means in conference. In the long run, it won't matter much, but for those really excited for the program immediately going forward, now ticket sales will only grow once the program begins winning at an NCAA tourney pace.

Appreciate the "keen" advice, but already realize the implications.

So in a sense, we owe CO a thank you for being the player he was, otherwise the program would continue to languish for many years to come.

Why transfer, prob have to sit out a year, then play 1 year?
Doesnt make sense. There is probably more behind the story.
There already has been much speculation of what was going on to precipitate this much anticipated development for the last week or two.

There was a reason Jay Wright took a pass on guys like Briscoe and Rysheed Jordan. I am not saying he would have landed them, but regardless, he knew the type of baggage that comes with certain players (and sometimes certain players' entourages or demanding fathers, etc.) and decided that the program is best served without these types of players.

I think Mullin sees things the same way. You either buy into the program, or you find somewhere else to play. It might cost SJU a few players, but you are going to rid yourself from a lot of the drama that was present in the past. You want guys who buy into a team, not guys who only buy into themselves.

It might hurt short-term, but what Mullin is doing will only benefit the program in the long run.

For the best. Talented guy, but if his reason for wanting to leave is because Mullin is going to be holding the players more accountable then good riddance. We want players who will welcome that. It's going to be exciting to have a young team that can start building something together. Yeah we may have a challenging year, but they'll be fun to watch. Plus if we can get a couple more of the players they're looking into this year, we may be able to surprise a few people. Happy to move on either way.
