Ishmail Wainright, SF Baylor Verbal

"Wainright's decision was heavily based on Baylor's commitment to faith and religion."

Umm...what? SAINT John's didn't do it for you? This is a joke right?

Color me shocked as I totally didn't expect to read that this morning.

If you saw any of Ish's tweets, it was kind of clear (as stupid as this may sound) that he was going to a big football school. He seems to love the sport and the atmosphere. Just look at the schools- Ohio St, Texas, Baylor.

Not a huge loss in my eyes as I wasn't too thrilled with his height to begin with. Great wingspan though.

Let's just keep Lawrence away from Kansas/Cincy, Rysheed away from Temple/Rutgers/Cuse and Martin away from UCLA/LSU.

Ummm, you do realize that Baylor is a Christian school founded by Baptist.

So we aren't known as a Catholic School?

It's like saying "I wanted a fast car, so I got a Corvette" while there was already a Corvette in his driveway. It had to be more than just the Catholic school thing, because SJ already fulfills that requirement.

Should really drop this subject but maybe Ish is not a Catholic. There is a difference.

And clearly, there was a lot more to his decision. He repeatedly mentioned education as being important to him and I already stated that he was looking at big football schools.

Who knows what Drew put in his head during his visit. Who knows if Gathers talked down about Lavin/SJU.

We lost him. Time to move on.

Before Lavin took over this would have driven me nuts. Now, not much at all. Lavin has made the sport of recruiting around here as exciting as the actual games.
Wainright is a talent, to be sure, but I am so confident the staff will get kids ranked even higher.

I can now wish the kid luck in college.

Exactly. I am stunned because from what I was told we were in very good shape with him.

But no I am not worried about recruiting and finding top quality kids even if some choose to go elsewhere. We have a big time coach.

I was actually going to say that in my first post, but left it out.

Agree. While I would have loved him to come, I would like to see another lead guard and big man.

I still am hoping for a Martin/Jordan class. I know Ish would have been a great addition but good luck to him. I really hope we meet Baylor when I am down at the CC. Show the players what they are missing with Coach :)

Hes a great player, but of all the positions ,w Amir,Dom, Sampson and Sanchez we are in great shape at the SF position., Id love to get a bona fide PF like Jermaine or Martin.

Good luck to him at Baylor. Time to move on. Coach Lavin and staff have really earned my trust. I believe he will find and get the players we need who want to be here.

As I told "Happy" this morning I now hate Baylor almost as much as I hate Duke.

A few years ago my anger over this would linger for a while.

I'm still shocked because I was beginning to think he was a lock for us but if there was 1 position that was the least of our needs it was small forward.

After seeing how we recovered from the Gathers thing and actually pretty much of all of last year I'm not worried in the least and it's not even like we have that many schollies anyway.

Finally we are working from a position of strength. Season getting closer. Cant wait !!!

Beating Baylor to win the Charleston Classic would also go a long way to pay back. Tall order though.

Agree MCN. Winning, in general, will bring more rewards in recruiting, but a win over Baylor would be icing. Is a very tough outing indeed.

I did take a peek at Baylor's roster and stats from last year. Their backcourt is by far their strength, with Pierre Jackson and Brady Heslip returning. Both are excellent shooters and double digit scores. Can't leave them open. Baylor's "weakness" is that they don't return any starters in the frontcourt nor double digit scorers. Their entire frontcourt is new, but there is size and talent there with Gathers, Austin and others.

If by any chance we advance to a game against Baylor, the key will be shutting down their backcourt and keeping Jackson from distributing effectively.

Thanks for the Baylor roster breakdown.
Much of how well SJU does depends on how quickly the new players can blend in with the returning players. I think that the talent is there to do really good things, putting it all together is the key. I feel good about that happening as the season progresses.

 Why the hate for Baylor.

They sent 3 players to the NBA last year. All 3 taken way after Harkless. Their best player barely made it out of the 1st round.

They haven't stolen a cornerstone recruit from us. Just 2 undersized players who it would've been nice to have.

Our staff clearly is more capable of preparing and training our players than theirs.

I hope we meet them in the CC. Best believe we have bulletin board material on them.

Jakarr is the player Gathers wishes he could be and ironically I think Jones does Gathers better than Gathers if you get what I mean.

You make some good points. Part of the distaste for Baylor is the coach and his questionable ethics and part of it is having two targeted recruits spurn us to go to Waco. However, as you point out, if we're going to lose two recruits, better they be undersized guys and ones that we wind up "replacing" with bigger and better talent anyway. We'll see if that's the case with Wainright, but I'm optimistic. Have you noticed how Gathers size is all over the place depending on what site you go to? Is he 6'6", 6'7" or 6'8" and does he weigh 230, 240 or 260? I want to play them just to size him up and see if we can compete early with a team that's ranked and had success the last few years. That game would be fun.

Lets not diminish Gathers. Hes a bull and we were dying to get him. We could have used another player w bulk. As much of a suprise as Jones seems to be, he is not in Gathers catagory. That said, Lavin has done a great job recruiting and will continue to do so. We have some great players on our radar.

Agree one thousand percent. Some of our fans as soon as we lose a recruit diminish his value because we didn't get him. Don't know for sure how good Gathers will be but he is definitely a BEAST. Anyone wanting to size him up better not insult him lol.
