Isaiah Whitehead, SG (Seton Hall verbal)

Great post Red

I, concur.

That has been stated numerous times by myself and a few others, that Lavin wouldn't waste time with kids he didn't feel he had a chance of nabbing. If he did put in any energy, then it would cease once he and the staff caught wind there wasn't a chance.

I'm also fairly confident we'll land a suitable class for '14. If we have a good season, then it could be a springboard for the '15 class.

Speaking of losing in-state talent.... Some people should realize how many kids JT3 haven't landed who resided in the DMV (DC, Maryland, and Virginia) area since he's been at Georgetown. It happens. Just land enough of those local kids, and garner sufficient talent outside of "your" area.

I like his last quote.

Definitely leaving NYC I'm told.

That has seemed to be the word circulating around for several months. You just hope it was hearsay (and, it still could've been), but seems like it's going to be the case.

I started to feel we weren't in a good position when Lavin never watched him in Vegas.

Maybe, Lavin was paying more attention to priorities in Vegas (big men).

My personal opinion is that Lavin is first and foremost a very smart recruiter. He targets players he believes he has a good chance with and does not exert an inordinate amount of wasted effort on players he has little or no chance of getting. If you look at his first true class he took chances, as he had to, with players who perhaps big time programs may have shied away from, Dlo, Nuri, Jakaar, etc and brought them to Queens. Second true class he targeted Felix and CO, both of whom were originally from Africa, and perhaps did not want to make a major move again. His philosophy worked out well, just like Louie with Bill Wennington who had moved from Montreal to LI following his parents divorce and much as he liked Duke, etc he didn't want to leave where he felt comfortable. With Rysheed he immediately stated he wanted to leave Philadelphia and Lavin being the smart recruiter he is invested the right amount of time and energy to win that MAJOR recruiting battle.
As a matter of fact his recruiting reminds me a great deal of that of Jim Calhoun in his early years at CONNU who I also believe was a very smart recruiter. He took over an NIT level program that had never reached, or come close to reaching, the heights attained by SJU, BC, Villanova, Syracuse or Georgetown and later on Seton Hall and Providence in the 1980s in the Big East. He recruited foreign players from Israel like Nadav Henfield and Doron Sheffer who were not on anyone's radar, players with a checkered past like Caron Butler and players like Ray Allen from South Carolina where the two big state schools are football schools and bball is a distant second. After a while he didn't have to recruit those type of players as doors opened for him everywhere but the initial years recruiting to CONNU was a challenge that Calhoun certainly overcame.
Lavin is doing a great job on the recruiting front IMHO and keeps bringing in better talent. I have no doubt when all is said and done this season we will be very pleased with the talent he will have gotten to commit to SJU. Fear not, despair not, he will loose far more recruiting battles then he will win, but our coach is smart and he will bring in top talent to SJU.
We have to accept that the majority of kids want to go away to school no matter how good the local program is, Christian Laetner didn't go to Syracuse he went to Duke. That is but 1 example and there are too numerous to list. Perhaps there are three kids every year in NYC who could play for SJU but in most circumstances wish to leave NYC. Well I bet there are ten top 100 players who don't live in NY who would be very interested in spending their college years in NYC. Coach will target and find from that group the players who best suit our needs. That I have no doubt.

While I don't necessarily think Coach Lavin shared your thoughts on why we had a chance with the recruits you cited, I completely agree that he does not waste time with recruits he doesn't feel he can land. I will never doubt his recruiting, and I seriously cannot believe any St. John's fans even harbors a single doubt after how he has delivered time and time again with nothing more than a single NCAA first round berth to sell to recruits.

On a side note, what I never understood (and expressed this often) with Norm's excuse of kids wanting to leave and no longer being afraid to go away to school, is that the opposite must also be true...kid would also leave their hometowns to come to the best city in the world. I personally don't care if we never get another NYC kid again as long as we are getting top 50 kids regularly.

What top 50 kids do you think we have a realistic shot at landing this year?

@ASlater247: According to Isaiah Whitehead's mom, they'll sit down & plan visits, but she expects to visit Syracuse, UCLA, Minnesota, Arizona, & Indiana.

Kaleb Joseph to Cuse.

No idea how this impacts IW. Kaleb is a scoring PG (I like his game alot).

IW has said he basically wants the ball in his hands. Not sure if he'd get that if Ennis stays for 2 years.

I'd guess that Indiana has to be the front runner for him now.

I also think Indiana is the front runner now. Just goes to show how quickly things can change in recruiting.

If it is indeed Indiana, just goes to show how fickle teenagers can be. Indiana only started recruiting him once they had a decommittment a few weeks ago. We're talking about a Top 20 kid who claims he wants to commit by the early signing period. Just goes to show (possibly) how badly he/his family wants him to get out of NY.

We'll see how it plays out.

They also have a top 100 guard in Ron Patterson coming in this year

Would like to have him but .would not lose sleep if he does not come WE are not hurting for a PG or SG Center much more of a priority at the present time.

@NYCHoops: New York def. New Jersey in OT, 90-88 to win #NikeTOC. Isaiah Whitehead 23pts, Khadeen Carrington 17pts. #NYCbasketball #SummerIsSerious

I've only seen Ennis a few times, but, as much as I like his game, he doesn't strike me as surefire NBA player. He reminds me more of a Brandon Triche type of four year player. If IW wants the ball in his hands at all, Syracuse will not be an option with Ennis and Joseph--two players I really like.

@Justin_Albers: 2014 G Isaiah Whitehead will visit Indiana, Minnesota and UCLA. Will visit IU first in early Sept. but no date yet. No Cuse visit. #iubb

Looks like Syracuse is no longer in the picture as many expected. And there are rumblings that Indiana might get a commitment from SG Robert Johnson this weekend which would most likely make the Whitehead recruitment wide open again.

Anyone remember how last summer everyone thought we were out of the Rysheed sweepstakes.

You stay involved long enough and you just might be the last school standing.

Exactly. We just have to take care of business on national tv and we become as attractive as anyone.

Is that saying there will be no Cuse visit at all or just that no Cuse visit is lined up yet?
He has 2 remaining.

He's already taken 3 officials?

Per scout:

"Whitehead will visit Indiana first, but a date has not yet been scheduled. Whitehead will not take an official visit to Syracuse, and the source indicated Whitehead has eliminated the Orange from his list of potential suitors. Guard Kaleb Joseph committed to Syracuse last weekend."

After Indiana, Minn & UCLA.

Thanks Johnnie1991. I'm sure IW will come out in the next day or so and proclaim that he hasn't eliminated any teams and he's wide open to all D-1 schools.

Good point. If we have the type of season we are capable of, the hype will build in NYC and I would imagine we would become a much more attractive option. In I think the longer this thing goes the better our chances are
