Fair enough. I'll restrain from further comment on the Lavin extension topic until the season begins.

Actually, you didn't start the hijacking of the thread. Fair enough on your part, nonetheless.

.... as I have said before to the administration won and loss factor is not controlling.

What has President Bobby Gempesaw said that leads you to the conclusion that he is satisfied with the school's return on investment for Mr. Lavin's Big East record of 36 wins and 36 losses ?

By the simple fact that if the 36-36 record was the be all as you seem to think it is he would not be the coach now.

Stop cherry picking things taken out of context. Jay Wright’s first 4 years in the Big East were 32-32 with just 1 winning BE record in his 4th year. And he took over for a coach who went to the NCAA’s 4 times at Villanova (Lappas). Lavin did not take over from a coach who enjoyed MORE success than he has, not even close.

Norm Robert’s first 4 years at SJU his League record was 19-47 and not only did he not get fired he got a rollover extension that lasted another 2 years.

Get a clue genius.

In Jay Wright's 4th year, he didn't just have a winning BE record, he took Nova to the Sweet 16. He hasn't looked back since.

Lavin is entering year 5 - year 4, if you want to factor in the year Dunlap coached. It is do or die for him at this point.

By the way, the Norm comparison is not appropriate. Lavin is being paid quadruple what Norm was paid. In other words, he's being paid to generate Jay Wright-type results. But just getting into the Tournament on a regular basis would make most fans happy, myself included.

Ah first off he has looked back. A few years ago he was 9-9 with a 6 game losing streak to end the season and then followed that up with a 5-13 season and then followed that up with a season in which he lost to Columbia by DOUBLE DIGITS at home. Apparently you did not read the Villanova boards during that great time frame where they were ready to run him out of town again.

And stop with the NCAA’s sweet 16 stuff. You can have a MEDIOCRE regular season and still make a late run that is why we are talking about the conference record for the year. Cuonzo Martin made the sweet 16 with Tennessee as an 11th seed last year, and their fan base RAN HIM OUT TO CALI. Why? Because a late run in the NCAA’s did not make them forget a mediocre regular season.

Again this is not to suggest that Jay should have been fired. No way. That is my point. Get off this nonsense. Barring a complete disaster Lavin is not getting fired.

And by the way I made the Norm comparison PRECISELY to point out that it was not fair to Norm. That was my point. By not putting things into context (such as Lavin having a cancer and actually the 6-12 season is not attributed to him) it is not fair to just throw out numbers.

Again that WAS MY POINT.

Barring a complete disaster Lavin is not getting fired.

That's your opinion. I disagree.
I think we miss the tournament and he's not resigned. But I will admit, if he lands Briscoe, he's back on the sidelines next year whether we have a great season or not.

I say if he isn't ranked and win at least one game in the tourney, kick the bum out. Barely slipping into the tournament as a bubble team once every 3-4 years is not what he is being paid for.

You make some good points but can we get to a place where you don't need to be calling out people or insulting them? Mr. Otis is a good guy who has volunteered his time on here for over a decade. While I don't agree with everything, he has pretty much stuck unemotionally to only facts, questions or simple, unadulterated opinions. I can never in 15 years ever remember Otis insulting anyone or being less than respectful to people. He doesn't deserve this.

C'mon. He is passive aggressive and knows exactly how to get under peoples skin and flame the board without outwardly appearing to do so. Obviously if several people have issues with him, maybe you should take a look into it. You're going to lose a lot of good posters (you already have actually) and will be left with a garbage forum that will be nothing but Lavin bashers. I know I'm not a poster that will be missed, however this is my final post. Thank you Paul for the website and the interaction I've been able to have with some SJU fans. Thank you Tom in Salem for being a moderator and a true fan even though you didn't always agree with Lavin. Here's to a great season. Take care SJU fans, should be a great year!

I have zero problem with people have different opinions. What I am talking about is insulting people. You ever meet Otis or talk to in person? He's a gentleman and doesn't strike me as passive aggressive at all and to assume that his motive is to get under peoples skin and flame the board is a big leap. He has his opinions just like you or anyone else. While I have recently disagreed with him, here in this forum, I don't find the need to insult him or any other members that behave rationally or respectfully.
That is exactly what I am saying. Nothing more. Have your opinion. Be respectful. He and many others have done that.

That sucks, rawdognyc and I really hope that you'll reconsider. We've lost enough good posters to have to lose another. I know you are not happy with Otis and how things went down but try to give it some time and see if you might come back. There are a lot of us who consider you a good poster and one that will definitely be missed. Think about it and at least consider it.

not signing Briscoe requires us to have a huge season to get the attention of quality players. If not, we will remain an NIT team at best.

Ummmmmmm.... Okay. Whatever.

I thought Lavin would turn it around as well as you but so far one NCAA and two NIT's.

I can't remember realfan or scotch necessarily directly name calling or insulting someone all the time by that standard.

He is an incessant whiner who makes things up to fit his agenda and then repeats it. With all due respect there are plenty of ways to insult someone then directly calling them out.

And the irony is I have him on record years ago questioning me as a fan, AN ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WAS DONE ABOUT IT.

This is your board Paul and you can do whatever you want. If you want to ban me I hav no qualms. But I will not apologize for what I have written nor will I stop when I find it appropriate to respond as well.

If you have problem with that then you have to do what you have to do. I will live with the consequences.

He's not the only one who does such. He's just the one who has been banned many times, but comes back like "Jason Voorhies" and "Michael Myers."

Yep. Some posters insult the intelligence of board members with the things they post.

I don't know why some of you make it your personal mission to expose "trolls" on the board. You do realize your just giving them what they want, which is attention? Let them rant, let them whine, eventually they will get bored.

Everyone, including myself, has gotten upset at posters who clearly post the same content over and over. But this is getting ridiculous, we need the season to start, cause we need another thing to talk about.

Instead of going at each other's throats over one recruit. And acting like St. John's basketball will be destroyed for eternity if we don't get Briscoe. Life will move on, there are other very good guards we are trying to get, and we might just be ok.

The drama on this board is getting a little out of hand. First exhibition is Nov 1, one month away, and it needs to get here. Enough is enough

‏@AdamZagoria I'll say this. Isaiah Briscoe would be a HUGE get for Steve Lavin & St. John's but they are swimming with the Big Boys on this one.

The only reason I can think of is because mediocrity-athletically, academically and otherwise- has become the standard at St. Johns.
