Is Obekpa Next? No! He's staying!

Another lesson for the trolls on here. To bash someone is one thing but to beat the dead horse and take it over the line is another. Quite a few of you should have your tails between your legs right now but are probably too stupid or don't care about the things you say behind a keyboard.

I was apathetic to his decision. Tens of thousands of students transfer every year it's wrong to criticize anyone for their personal choices. That apathy has turned to anticipation. Good to see our front court in tact(somewhat).

For the record, I still wish to see a coaching change and maintain the 2014 recruiting effort was reprehensible. I, too, am glad to see opportunities on the horizon. However, I just cannot see this coach having any real success.

Just curious

Say our 2014 class ends up being:

Adonis De La Rosa
Keith Thomas
Jon Horford
Marlon Jones

Is it still a failure in your eyes?

We won't know if it's a failure or not until the season is well in progress. But none of those guys project to be anything more than serviceable roll players. That still leaves us with a horrendously weak front line, especially offensively.

I think Horford would be more than a role player on this team. We could really use a guy from a winning culture

Agree that it's nice to get a kid from a winning program. And I know that stats aren't everything. I also know that the kid only averaged like 13 minutes a game last year. But what makes you think that he's going to be more than a role player? I haven't watched enough of him to say whether he will or he won't, just wondering what makes you feel confident that he can have more of an impact here than he did at Mich(after 3 years there)? Sounds similar to Branch situation in that some may be expecting a kid to come as more than advertised. And unfortunately almost all of Lavin's recruits/transfers have been less than advertised.
Maybe because Michigan was a final 2 team last year and an elite 8 team this year and we...well...we...uh...were not!

So you're assuming that he's going to be an impact player simply because he was on Mich? Have you watched the kid play much?

Agree with Theo that expectations should be tempered. Horford played less as a soph on the FF team then he did as a frosh and then only played 13 mpg as a JR on a team that lost McGary early and only had one other "big". Of course Beilein doesn't really play with bigs much, he likes guys who dribble, pass, move and shoot all over the floor so that might have slowed Horford's development. I have no doubt that he can definitely contribute if he comes to STJ but how much impact, i.e. star or role player, may be up for debate. I also feel if he was wedded and learned from the "winning culture" of UM he'd probably stay there.

Think you were agreeing with me(I'm not Theo). Or maybe you were agreeing with both of us, which would kind of put you in the middle somewhere :)

Yeah, I think you're right. TRabinowitz is Theo. Difficulty figuring out the multiple quotes.

This is from the Villanova game this past season, anyone else notice anything about it?

What is there to notice?

To me it looks like Chris is about to sneeze and Laving is telling him "No, no no! - Not on suit!" or maybe "Chris, just look up at the lights - that'll help you sneeze"

At this point, that would be a good recovery. However, I truly believe there is a reason that top programs pounce on certain prospects and why others are still available in April.

Regardless, my issue is the coach. I don't think there was a roster in the country that Lavin could have taken to the Final Four. Yes, I think he would have messed up that Kentucky team.

I think the reason that top programs aren't pouncing on these prospects is because they don't need these prospects. Those type of schools don't have to go after players, the players go after them. Kentucky's roster is full of nothing by 4 and 5 star recruits. Why would they waste their time on the 75th best prospect in the class? However, that doesn't mean that that 75th ranked player is not good or should be completely ignored.....

So is the meeting with Lav today?

And here's a question. If Lav decides to not let obekpa return, how would you respond to that? Would you be angry with Lav? Don't think he does though, because I'm not buying that Chris is a cancer in the locker room, he just doesn't like coach Lavin. We are making it out to be like obekpa is not on good terms with the players, and that couldn't be further from the truth. Deep down this a Lav/Chris conflict between the two of them, I don't think it has to do with obekpas presence in the locker room.

If he took back Harrison (who allegedly was committing a lot worse offenses) then I'm sure Obepka will be welcomed back.

Top programs? Nearly every program is done recruiting except us. Everyone else in our conference has wrapped up their recruiting for next season, or is just adding their 12/13th bench warmers.

A shot-blocking savant who has DIII skills everywhere else.
Where do I sign up?

I gather that you've never actually seen a DIII game...

There are DIII big men who have better offensive skills then Obekpa. This is 100% true

This thread got awfully quiet. Is he back and are we going to get anymore 2014 recruits?

Some may not be happy about this, but I think he brings another dimension to the court, that we can't replicate elsewhere. This year, he got the ultimate respect. Some teams didn't even attempt to get the ball inside on us when he was in the game.

Unless they are going to shoot the ball like Robert Morris did against us, then Obekpa will always be a contributer. He's just gotta watch out for those fouls.
