Is Obekpa Next? No! He's staying!

Extremely frustrating. We should be talking excitedly about next season and, instead, are looking simply to get past next year and into the next round of recruiting with the prospect of not sniffing the tournament for another 3-4 years...as much as I love this team, it will feel like the Norm years

It pains me to say this, but I think you're right. :(

If Baylor and Oregon are the 2 possible landing spots than you really have to question the kid's makeup. Talk about two shady programs.

Is this really a surprise?

Don't you recall Obekpa's handlers pushing Chris towards Oregon about a week before he popped for SJU? Oregon wasn't even on his list but they were granted an official visit at the last minute of his recruitment. Chris pulled out of the visit at the 12th hour.

Univer$ity of Oregon = Univer$ity of Nike

I have no doubt that they make illegal recruiting contacts because they are always the first on everyone's transfer list.

Add Baylor to the mix and it smells from here to Staten Island.

That being said, Chris is a grown man and he has a right to do what he wants.

Grown men don't appear in public with that haircut.

But seriously, they don't mutiny on their team either. Given how this has played out it's obvious there was no alternative.

Chris, nor any of the players, "mutinied" on their team.

I said it before- the players and their attitudes and efforts were just a reflection of the coaching.

Jakarr choking out the Robert Morris player was the equivalent of Tyson biting Holyfield's ear. Yeah, he wanted to win but he didn't have a clue how.

I find it funny how many people are bashing Obekpa and his game right now.

Rico Hines is head of player development, no? Worked with NBA players and was on the GS Warriors, no?

Some of the comments here are comical.

First we['ll have to disagree. If Chris actually refused to reenter a game that is a reflection on him and him alone. I've had some shitty bosses too. But if I ever told my boss I refused to do my job, no matter how bad that boss was at his job, I'd be out of mine. As I said in another post I'm not defending the staff, they certainly have shown some deficiencies, but if college athletes want to be treated like employees they have to act like employees as well.

It's called quitting. If you worked for a company that was going under and your boss was incompetent and you were smart you'd find another job and quit. That's essentially what Chris did.

Oregon & Baylor are top targets... These two schools always poach transfers, where is the investigation? Phil Knight cough cough

I am sure you are way too young to remember Wayne McKoy. When we recruited him, Looie wanted him to have the best big man coach possible, and there was a guy who wanted to cut his coaching teeth, so St. John's hired all-time NBA great Willis Reed. McKoy never amounted to a hill of beans compared to his vast potential. A few years back one of his college teammates told me that McKoy was the laziest player he ever saw. McKoy would practice half heartedly, and hardly work on improving his game. When the teammate called him out on it, McKoy responded, "I'll work on that when I get to the NBA".

Now to be fair, that former player was harsh on Carnesecca for allowing McKoy not to run stairs in the gym, or any other tedious exercise that Wayne wanted to opt out of. But also in fairness, are we also going to blame Willis Reed for not developing McKoy into an NBA talent.

Obekpa was outhustled and outplayed by GG for a good portion of the season. I think Obekpa has more raw talent in his finger than GG in his whole body. But instead of using that demotion as a catalyst to work his butt off and then play his butt off, he sulked like a prima dona. So yes, I think the problem with Obekpa is Obekpa. I'm very mercenary, because I'd want to keep him because he is the best thing we have down low. But on the other hand, the guy is about 1/5 of an NBA player right now, and if he wanted to cop an attitude after accomplishing so little, let him walk.

This isn't about McKoy, Louie, GG or the NBA.

And if you don't care about Obekpa leaving, you really shouldn't care about anything going on right now because none of our current players have accomplished anything or have played a postseason game worth noting.

Memory lane long winded posts are really getting tedious.

Don't read them.

Who in the NCAA would have the incentive to investigate Phil Knight and kill the Golden Goose?

Part if me wants to despise the kid for being a quitter but part if me understands given the state of the program.

All this emotion over a quitter in the middle of the most important game of the season.Lavin, after adjusting for the earlier coaching mistakes, had the team playing well and Jordan became the quard that we have not had in years. The team had to deal ,after we were finally playing like a team:
1) A mother in the hospital
2) Deaths to family members and close friend.
3) Injury -Obekpa
4)Sickness-Jordan
5)Pointer' game was seriously effected by his friend's death.

Why do we blame Lavin for all this? Don't we have any understanding how ,especially a mother's sickness and family deaths, effect a team? A quitter and some of you still want him..Give the coaching staff a break

A kid wanting to transfer is understandable. Quitting on your teammates in the middle of a game is inexcusable.

100% about quitting on your teammates and he has always been a bit of whiner. Palms up after a foull call, the constant flagrant elbows. The condescending laugh after a bad call.
The "state of the program" started with him not going back in during the PC game. The staff asking him if he was part of the team or not if not then transfer. He called their bluff. Sampson was gone last yr so him leaving this yr is not a surprise but is a blow to the program only because he was a great player and we all would have loved to see him stay. Hooper ...whatever. That looks worse on the surface. The Obekpa transfer reflects poorly becasue it shows a rift between a player and the staff. Who is ultamitley at fault who knows for sure. I would say primadona player. The "state of the program" was fine after the Marquette OT game.

Btw, IF a kid did that to me (and, again, I don't know exactly what happened), he would not have played another second for me. I wouldn't have even given him the option of staying.

Anyone have more info on the 6'8" Westchester CC player that averaged a double double and visited campus last week?

The visit was unofficial, and he is taking an official visit soon. Heard Fordham, FSU, and Southern Miss are also involved. If he wants immediate D1 playing time he'll commit to St. John's...

Obviously Joey's a big body but he didn't get any minutes at FIIU so how productive will he be in the BE? Time will tell. Also I'm assuming he only has one year left, correct?

1.5 years. Don't expect much.

Will he give us Jasulonis minutes? AND, ABOUT THE SAME PPG, RPG'S, ETC?

Just need him to pull down 8+ boards a game. Nothing more and nothing less. Don't need him to be a scorer. Just need to use his body to pull down boards.

Believe me that is not happening. Don't set yourself up for disappointment.

AP announcement about CO transfer.."6'9" Sophomore led Division 1 in 2012-13 with 4.03 blocks per game and led BE conference this year with2.9 blocks per game." 'Obepka averaged 3.9 points and 5.5 rebounds for his 2 seasons."

The news about CO has 2 implications attached to it. First, at less than 4 points a game and given his shot blocking and rebounding stats, which are not that special , this kid was not the 2nd coming of Bill Russell. And, let's factor in, his limited real BB skills. Awful free throw shooter, no post moves, and a liability because of that in close end of game situations..Other than shot blocking, he wasn't a good face up defender and he was foul ;prone because of weak fundamentals. Throw in a attitude problem and is he really a loss, performance wise?

So, implications number 2 may be more serious. Since Season end and the debacle loss to R. Morris, all news about our Program has less than positive spin..Even for Lavin.

And, where is STEVE and is HE just doing his TV gig for a possible return to the booth?

If he is looking to leave, its' likely an announcement wouldn't happen until the NCAA GAME on Monday night. Also, we may not have seen the last of player defections and, that would be a catastrophe , possibly leading to him being fired instead of Extended. Even, the most spirited of Lavin defenders would have to acknowledge the SOS that communicates, as it says he's lost his players' confidence.

UCLA fans told us STEVE got to the Sweet 16 with Final 4 talent, he inherited from Harrick.. It could be said here, STEVE got us 20 wins from a team that talent wise should have won 30. Think about it. At this point, the Lavin era appears to be crumbling. And, that's a fact.

We've had one player in the last 13 seasons average 8 rebounds or more per game (Harkless). Unfortunately, I don't think a guy who didn't play at FIU is going to be #2.
