Hire Mike Rice

Not "getting" the let's hire Mike Rice movement. However knowledgeable Rice might be, is adding a former Division I HC -- and volatile one at that -- to CM's staff a good idea, especially after the ill-fated (and costly) ego-driven Mullin/Slice split. Given their personalities, seems to me that hiring Rice would be a potential disaster. And as a recruiter, no doubt his reputation would precede him. Would you want your kid to commit to a guy who's widely perceived as both both physically and psychologically abusive? I don't think so. I'm all for second chances, and I think Rice deserves one and knows the game better than most -- but would prefer that that he proves he's changed at another Division 1 program.
Parents already letting their kids play for Rice and they are even younger than college kids. Plus he would be an assistant and Mullin would be there to oversee and it seems Chris has not even raised his voice to a player in the two years he has been coaching.

What gets lost in all the shuffle with the Rice stint at Rutgers is the lack of complaints by the players who played for him, the ones who who were supposedly "abused." I won't discuss opinions on this because I perfectly well understand his behavior is totally unacceptable in today's world. I am not sure that makes for a better world though. Life's best lessons are learned by dealing with adversity and understanding life isn't fair or always easy. However, I come from a completely different generation, one where you stood your ground and fought, not run to "Mommy".

I don't think we're talking about the same thing. I respect discipline and "manning up" (probably not PC to even use that term any more) but you are not teaching discipline when you yourself are not disciplined. It is one thing to be passionate and intense and another to be an out of control lunatic. I had a coach grab one of my teammates by the hair and drag him out of the gym by his hair. (way) Back then I thought - what an A-hole. I still think that, but don't feel the same way about other coaches who did things that would not be acceptable today. Even if you get past the beaning players with balls and grabbing and shoving them. A grown man in a leadership position over young people and representing a large, public, educational institution in one of its most prominent roles, using homophobic slurs in the 21st century is not in control of himself. I've got nothing against the guy but even if he's permanently past all that, I still don't get the desire to hire him.

Certainly respect your opinion but I think you are missing my point. I am not defending Rice, merely putting his actions in my context. I also clearly stated I understood the context of his actions in today's society. I was merely putting it in my context. We live in a world where "homophobic slurs" are utterly taboo but for example, tweets and skits wishing the POTUS dead are perfectly acceptable.

Mullin has never coached a winning program
Slice had 1 winning season in 4 years at Manhattan.

And what does being a Fordham grad have to do with it?

I never understood coaches that act like idiots. Shocked no one punched Bobby Knight in the face.
My HS baseball coach was a screamer, which makes even less sense in baseball than basketball. I was really good so I got spared but some of my friends were not so lucky. By the time PSAL playoffs rolled around we only had 11 guys because like 5 guys quit.

FWIW Rice actually coached my friend's kid on a travel team shortly after he started his rehabilitation tour and swears he is a good guy. So do a couple people on the boards that seem to know him. But personally I have little time for lunatic screamers. Let alone some of the stuff that was on the Rice video.

A program like SJU which has been spinning its wheels for over ten years in trying to raise its profile has to be willing to take chances in its recruiting and hiring. If Chris thinks Rice can help in coaching and recruiting even for a couple of years he should be considered.
SJU doesn't need a Ron Rutledge for the next 20 years. It needs help now and if Rice helps the program, behaves himself and lands a head coaching job in a couple of years more power to him.If he can't control himself which I think is unlikely he is aware he would have to leave.

So let's say we do hire Rice. What makes anyone think he'll hang around for more than a year or two at the most? He's already been mentioned as a potential HC at Duquesne and Quinipiac. Don't you think he'll bolt at the first opportunity that presents itself?

Of course any assistant would bolt for an HC role. But it would be good for CM to see how other Div I coaches run things, and get some insight in that regard.

You know, i think Chris likes running this program like a junior NBA team. Every coach he's hired sans Slice has some sort of NBA ties and he runs an NBA-style free-wheeling offense. If he wants to "see how other Div 1 coaches run things", which he might not, Rice may not be the best option because I think he really wants to run his own program real soon.

If he's heading in the direction of hiring an experienced coach he'd probably be better served with an older guy who won't be as apt to be sniffing around for other jobs and pull up states at a moments notice. There are probably a few around who fit that description.

I agree with you. It's Mullin's call assuming that the University would have no objections. I just don't get why this particular guy is the most talked about option.

I think the reason why Rice is mentioned is because he fits the bill with head coaching experience, and he has been rehabilitating himself and seems truly remorseful and would give our bench much needed college experience. Plus the rumors that he would have a couple of Jersey recruits that we are trying to get lined up in his pocket.

Hopefully he does not have any recruits chained in his basement ;)

Whoops, didn't see your post before I posted mine.

An assistant coach and part of a staff is different than leading a program.

And what does being a Fordham grad have to do with it?

Pedigree check.
I hate Fordham. I'm still scarred from the time Charlie Yelverton at 6'2" out jumped our 7' Center Bill Phillips in MSG. I still have a tick. :(

best local option who potentially comes with built-in recruits?

Do we have an opening?

Better question is should there be an opening. Now that Matt's staying I still would lean towards a yes to that question.

Did I miss a Matt is staying announcement ?

Well if Paultz implies it it must be true or so I've been told.

No idea about that event as I'm sure it was way before I was born

But I am sorry it was such a traumatic experience
