Heron Officially Cleared Per SJU Press release

Now the most talented team in the Big East and the most talent at St. John’s in a while.[/quote]

Possibly, per the former.... But I agree, per the latter. On paper, it is the most talented team we've had in quite some time.

Nevertheless, great news for Heron and the Johnnies!

Villanova are still top dogs and if we end up top 4 then it would be a very good season.

We'll have a better idea after the 4th Big East Game, which is Villanova on the road January 8th.

I've said it before, if we're 2-2 after those games, we're in great shape. I'm saying that not because I think we're only an OK team, but because those first 4 conference games might be our toughest four-game stretch in the Big East this year. Even 1-3 would not be the end of the world, although we'd have serious work to do.

Schedule is very front-loaded, and if we come out of that 2-2, I think we will be in great position to do major damage the rest of the way.

Hey Tony, it really works. Sold many houses via St.Anthony.

"Most important is how they play together." Chris Mullin
That's it, in a nutshell, and Mullin saying that upfront indicates to me, he'll be spouting that ad nauseum to the team all year.
Plus, the two major pieces--Ponds & Heron--have been told that the NBA evaluates its draft picks on more than points-per-game, and also includes 'efficiency', assists, and defense in its calculus.
Plus, plus--Simon--our other major piece, plays that way to begin with...and then there's Figueroa.
Yeah, I see us vying for the BEC top spot in the regular season, and if we fall short--watch out in the BET.

Mullin can say it all he wants but that doesn’t mean the players will listen, and very often they don’t.
He has a huge challenge in front of him to get the team to play together and share the ball. Team chemistry is key going forward and success this season is based upon how unselfish the top 5 players will be. No more no less.

Fighting real hard to not get to excited, because with SJU, well you know the drill.

In reality though.
Should be a top 25 team, finish in the top 3 in the big east, and atleast make it to the sweet 16.
Anything more is butters.

Finally big things for SJU? Stay tuned.

Couldn't agree more with RMN. Success this year depends upon chemistry and sharing the ball and we can't assume that this will be a given. That is where coaching and team leadership comes in. Plus side is we have real talent and quality depth. Can't ask for more than that.

Wrote alot but "load failed" and not typing all that again.

Shorter version.
Top 25, top 3 in BE and atleast the sweet16, anything more would be butters

Glad it’s now official! This team will need some time to gel, but if they commit to team defense and rebounding to go along with their individual scoring talents and court vision they should be fine. You can see some of their individual commitment to fitness and strengthening core muscles, and with maybe the exception of LJ, the major contributors understand the speed of the game at this level. It should be a lot of fun and I for one don’t hate having a weaker OOC schedule so they can get their timing right with each other before the BE grind. For at least one season, it would be nice to play a few games in a row without the starters gassed with the lack of depth, hope we stay healthy enough so we can play 8 or 9 deep (can’t remember the last time we did that). I leave the predictions to those who watch them more closely in practice and have a better feel, but this year should finally give Coach the horses to play the game his way, hopefully that translates to victories and an NCAA bid with a chance to play a couple of games, the new AD and the athletic budget can use the post season revenue. Let’s do this!

Great news!! The only team better than us in the Big East is Villanova. We should finish second,

I don’t think they’re better, but they get benefit of the doubt...

Totally agree. Pound for pound and on paper, we have the better players. However, Jay Wright is a great coach and always gets the most out of his guys. If Mullin can get the most out of our guys, I don't see why we can't be head to head with Nova. We should be running every team out of the gym with our depth. You go Ponds, Heron, Simon, Clark and Keita (LJ Fig)... You still have a bench of Keita/Fig, Dixon, Roberts and Trimble. With G. Will and Earlington after them. I see Williams getting some burn. Not so much for Earlington. Maybe even Redshirt Earlington? Anyway, there's a ton of talent 1 thru 10 which I don't see any other team matching up to it. So with this depth you need to just go forty minutes of hell. Leave your foot on the gas no matter what. We have taken so many beatings the last few years, it's time for pay back. I don't care if we're up 50 points.

Well then I guess luckily we have an extremely soft OOC schedule to build our team chemistry against lol

Is there any chance we open the season ranked in the Top 25? I doubt it, but just curious.

If coach and staff can not be successful with the present talent, his job will be in question But do not see that happening , Feel like most it will be a fun season filled with many wins and personal accomplishments

Oh i agree, RMN.
I'm thinking the 'pieces' are there not just for what could be a magical season based on 'talent' and 'depth'--but also because of personal 'incentive'.
Ponds scored almost 22 ppg last season, was primary scoring option, was double-teamed-plus, had his shooting %-age plummet from his freshman year, and played spotty D.
He's been told what NBA evaluators are looking for 'from him'--which includes more passing, efficient scoring, and solid D--plus wins.
Heron has also been told...
Simon is a perfect NBA-prototype and plays a team game.
Then, there's Figueroa...
All the reasons why I'm optimistic that an exciting season is on the rise.
