Harrison

Maybe he is not getting calls from the refs because they don't like his on court demeanor. Not saying it's right but sometimes is human nature not to reward a perceived malcontent.

Then that's on the refs not D'Lo. He probably got knocked down 5x in the past 3 games and it might have been called once. Mind you, he isn't a flopper. When he falls it's usually a real foul. I have seen games where the ref is RIGHT in front of him and refuses to give him calls.
May be on refs but as the saying goes you cannot fight city hall or don't cut off your nose to spite your face-take your pick.

Basketball is a game filled with selfish players. 1 thing I've noticed all year is how obvious it is that he has a running tally of how many points he has each game. Makes me sick but its not a rare occurrence. Most players are better at masking it than he is. And what was up with him chucking up a 3 in transition tonight when he was ahead of the break and had 3 trailing teammates? Kid needs a reality check and I don't think benching him for 4 minutes is the answer.

Look, I don't care much about one incident. But obviously, Harrison has not grown up. It is just as obvious that stats (the pros!!) is on his miind and it is a big contributor to the lack of chemistry on this team.

In the papers today it said Harrison was angry because Lavin said they had to do post game interviews and Harrison wanted to make sure he was the first one on the bus instead

If it continues to accelerate DLo could jeopardize his college and professional careers.

No coach worth his salt will (or should) tolerate public displays of insubordination.

CR - there must have been discipline problems of this sort back in the UCLA days.

If so, how did Lavin handle them?

I just rewound and watched it again and Lavin was laughing/smiling when D'Angelo was yelling at the refs over his shoulder and it looked like he was still bitching about the refs when he pointed at Lavin's chest(not his face or head)

I watched when they came back from commercial again and Lavin was just giving instructions in the huddle to everyone, including D'Angelo and he didn't look stressed at all to me

i saw this as well. some of you are making this out to be a sprewell moment. it wasn't.

My sense on the situation, from an outsider's standpoint, is that Lavin and D-Lo have very much a father/son relationship. Lavin feels the needs to discipline or make an example of him to help him grow and reach his potential. D-Lo has a rebellious side, but at the end of the day he is a good kid and absolutely loves Lavin.

Harrison is an extremely talented and passionate kid who had a tough upbringing. He seems like a genuinely good kid who lets his emotions sometimes get the best of him. In the heat of the moment, many of us passionate types have said some things both on the court and on the sidelines that we wish we hadn't. Cut the kid some slack.

So D'Angelo gets a pass because of his upbringing? I don't think so.

Especially a kid who has been kicked out of practice as a sophomore and is supposed to be a "leader" around such a young group. He is supposed to set the tone.

I see a kid who is given rope because he has shooting ability and talent.

Many coaches wouldn't take what he did last night even if some on here just want to brush it off.

I'd love to see try that with a guy like Ed Cooley or some coach who would give it right back to him. D'Angelo did something similar in Charleston but it was more of sulking and ignoring Lavin as he was talking to him as he was benched. But Lavin went and put him right back in the game again.

That smile that Lavin cracked last night wasn't a smile of endearment. I think it was more of embarrassment and trying to remain calm.

D'Lo was God awful last night and there is no flow in his game. He is playing selfish and rushing every move he makes. Having your shot blocked twice in a season as guard is rare.....two in a game is a player out of control on offense and hurting his team. Chucking up a 3 on a fast break with two players trailing is mindless and he deserved the bench after that....period. If our poor play (offense, defense and rebounding) did not make this expected blowout such a close game, Harrison would have been riding the pines. Jamal Branch will become the equalizer on this team.....Harrsion will sit more and Charles Boyer will play more. Speaking of Frenchie, Lavin's senior moment of the game was when he put Marco in after taking Chris out....to an ovation......only to put Chris back in for Marco a few "seconds" later!!! WTF was that about????

This team lacks discipline, leadership and aggressiveness. What is the sense of having long athletic players if they cannot press an inferior opponent? All this starts in practice and that is where there is a difference from the five players that returned this year from their aggressiveness last year.......that difference is coach D......period! It says mucho when your assistant is hired for an NBA job and not the head coach.

I heard Lavin's halftime interview and he tried to explain his team's poor play on (a) youth and (b) the bright lights of the Garden!! I would think that the "home team" coach would be smarter, but obviously not. That was as embarrassing as his team's poor play on national television. Fordham had a bunch of frosh and sophs on the court and they lacked their best player....Gaston.....and it was Pecora that should have lamented his team's youth!

Finally, I am feeling just a wee bit cheated when the product I expected and was advertised just 2 months ago is not what I am paying for. There was no hint by the staff of the Sanchez mystery when season tickets went on sale......there was no hint that God's Gift would be redshirted......there was no hint that Felix Balamou "might be" redshirted!!! Who the f*ck is conducting practices and doing due diligence???? Norm Robets is starting to look like an organizational genius next to these guys!

Everyone in the program needs to step it up a notch....starting with the coaches. If Harrison becomes a distraction, bench him and let him "win" his starting job back. If he does not get with the program then, like Nurideen, he needs to go.

It all comes down to this: It is all about W's and L's. That's the bottom line. We NEED Harrison to be competitive on the court. Without him, we are lost. So other than breaking the law, he should pretty much be allowed to do whatever he wants. ....

Wow

This thread is like the theater of the absurd. There are comments that are pure speculation. That Lavin and Harrison have a father-son relationship. They have a Kung Fu Master and young Grasshopper relationship. That D Lo is calculating his points and steals in his head after each basket. That winning is all that matters. That he is reviewing his draft position (?) instead of focusing on defense. All I know for sure is that Lavin and D Lo have a coach-player relationship. If D Lo screws up, he will sit. If he misses a practice, he will sit. And so on. As for needing him to win? Just like Branch Rickey told Ralph Kiner during contract negotiations, SJU can finish 8th in the Big East with him, and 8th without him. D Lo can score the ball. No questions there. As for the NBA, I doubt many coaches are drooling over the thought of having guard that is not super athletic that shoots under 40% from the field and has maturity issues. plus, his form has been exposed. He already is an excellent college player. His numbers can improve when the pressure of being the go to guy is somewhat alleviated. But his game is already developed. I don't see the upside for major improvement. What holds him back is the cast around him, and whatever demons bring out the attitude problems.

His point total is in clear view in every arena.

I've seen him checking out his points all the time. Especially when he's approaching 20 points.

In fairness, I've seen Jakarr do the same on occasion.

Let's be honest guys...if you were playing the game in this day in age you would be scoreboard watching too. With Stern dangling a possible million dollar contract in front of your nose, you are going to try as hard as possible to get noticed and make the NBA. Part of that includes scoreboard watching but as others have said, some do it more subtly than others. He has plenty of lighthearted moments none of you care to mention. Last night at the FT line he was talking to a teammate before given the ball by the ref and when the ref passed it to him he almost wasn't ready and it almost hit him. He smirked and took a few FT's. When Obekpa and Sampson were getting blocks, he poked his head in and gave a pat on the back. I see him laughing with Lavin almost every game. By the way, some people said this incident lasted 30 secs? I counted about 5 seconds. And he didn't have to be separated by another coach idk where that came from.

It's completely rare that you have a Jeter like figure especially in basketball where many players DO come from rough neighborhoods with no father. Basketball is a sport of aggression, flashiness, dominance, etc. of course players will get emotional. It looks like Lavin and D'Lo have a tough love relationship. They may not always understand each other, but at the end of the day, he's our guy and Lavin knows that. Ever heard the saying "you take the good with the bad"? No one is perfect...but D'Lo's upside is way more apparent than his downside. Give the kid a break he plays hard and is a 20 pt scorer.

The substituting Marco for CO and back again was actually an offensive (foul shooting) defense substitution by coach Lavin.
