Harrison suspended rest of the year

I wish only the best for this young man. I hope Lavin has a recruit tucked away somewhere that none of us know about.

Can we start a "thread" of little Johnny jokes? This Harrison stuff is killing me. Hope he makes the best decision for him and his future. This season is over. Can't wait till next year.

... As long as we are on the staff, Harrison is just the latest entry in a line of players who they took risks on and didn't work out. Lindsey, Pelle, Polee among others. Sampson, Garrett, Sanchez ended up playing but only after long delays. Hopefully now that there is a base of talent in the program they will start to make more careful recruiting decisions.

This season is over. What is the absolute best we could have hoped for, a first round loss in the NCAA tournament? Next year is the first of many years that we can reasonably expect a lot of success in the tournament. Getting suspended now shows Harrison he is not above the team and will hopefully set up a great ending to his career at STJ. We need this kid more than anyone on the roster, and I trust Coach Lavin completely.

Those of you that want to harp shooting %s, have to realize the difference between a kid like Harrison who HAS to create a lot of his looks and play as the focal point of every defense vs. kids that get open looks and layups/dunks because of the work of others. Producers and consumers. Any shot Harrison takes without a hand in his face is a good shot.

Want the truth? The truth is our season was over before suspending Harrison, and our staff knew it. Had we beaten Pitt, there would have been reason to believe we could beat Providence away and then Marquette at home. With our without Harrison, our chances of a bid are somewhere between astronimical and incalculable.

You must be related to Harrison to think his shot selection was anything but horrible. Even if he was in the schoolyard, less talented teammates would be yelling at him for hositing up shots from far beyond the arc, often without any hope of offensive rebounds. Harrison didn't HAVE to create his own looks, but he basically hung around the perimeter waiting for the ball to come to him, rather than cut hard, flash, and try to receive the ball in position to shoot.

I've been to almost all games, and I don't remember defenses keying on him, or constructing schemes that had him doubled, tailed, or anything like that. You didn't have to do that in the Big East. Just let Harrison hoist up shots, and he'll miss 2 out of 3 on average, and do much worse than that in the Big East.
Did you miss the Gtown games where Dlo was tagged the whole time? It was shades of Wingate and Mullin all the way just like Daddy Thompson did. but with more sophistication by JTIII. From there on you could count the amount of open jumpers he got on two hands going forward. Unfortunately Lavin's offense really revolved around him and you could see the frustration he faced. Yeah he forced some shots but he hit several too and I attribute the whole thing to an ineffective offense running without a PG. He did rebound a lot better during that period and came up with some superior passes which belied the one dimensional accusations I've been hearing. Never once did he enjoy the open shots that guys like Heslip and Woodall had against us. As far as I'm concerned if his infractions didn't involve drugs, academics or some sort of violence he got a royal screwing that should never happen to unpaid players who play as hard as he did. I recall plenty of times Justin Burrell stood around on both ends of the court and nothing ever happened to him except the trumped up 6th man award.that Lavin arranged. That was a guy who cried all night long and set a lousy example for his team. Then you had a guy like Evans who never once questioned a call getting pinned to the bench after a solid three year body of work. Funny how guidance from above only goes one way with no thought to kids who are getting a raw deal under the guise of allegiance to a "System" which did nothing but yield open threes that cost us games. Dunlap finally intervened in his behalf but most of the damage was already done. What I'm seeing is a coach who can't handle his team, can't build a balanced roster and is currently falling on his face acquiring the players we need to get to the next level of performance. Sound familiar to any of you who systematically knocked his predecessor?
YOU scare me... always have.

the bottom line...harrison must try to enjoy the game. sometimes he's angry...other times he's sad.

maybe the time off will help put basketball in perspective. it's something you play.
I loved playing basketball, the joy of it. Team chemistry, friends, good competition. Fair game was up to the officials. Win most ... lose some. Rearview mirror. Wish I got a free education from doing what I love to do... what gave me the most joy. Press on young man and hopefully don't regret the decisions you made in your journey!

I give Coach Lavin much praise for being a educator/coach, and most of all a man who has some level of self accountablility and expectation. Probably it would have been much easier just let things ride, 3 more games in the regular season and anything that came after that. Heck he put up with deportment that disappointed many people, but they would put up with the negagtive stuff just to see our guys out on the floor giving more than they took. Just three more games or so..... but it kept festering. It had to have an effect on the other kids.It had to drive the coaching staff nuts, and finally for some reason we may never know. What single thing put it over the top, but it surely did go over and Coach stood up and said I want to win, I want our kids to feel good about themselves. BUT, the time has come, we must act.He did what a man with expectations and accountablilty would do, and there aren't too many coaches who would deal with what Lavin was about to deal with. It might backfire, could it be a mistake? A man who is building something specal sometimes has to take a chance or two along the way. Only 3 games to go, why rock the boat now? I think coach Lavin rocked the boat, because the boat needed rocking. Oh, I enjoyed Harrison a lot, but there were times when he would make me cuss. What kind of man would jeapordize his own future? I think a man who was building something special. A man guided by self expectations, and self accountability. Sometimes when you build something special you have got to take some chances, I am proud of Coach Lavin. No one is bigger than the program itself. If Harrison quietly reflects on what has happened he may swallow hard and may want to go up to Coach and tell him thanks Coach for caring enough.
The Big Picture! Awesome quote. I'm also drinking a manhattan .... :p

Great news, let's hope he comes back next year with a renewed commitment. We have the pieces in place for an NCAA run.

Agreed. Coach takes a stand on principle and D'Lo responds with some accountability of his own and sticks it out. A wild last few days with our team, but this whole situation could be a big catalyst for these guys next year.

If this is accurate and he cleans up his act. this could be awesome news!

I am happy for D'Angelo. This could be what this team needed. Looking forward to next year!

With all due respect this is not what the team needed!
The team did not need its leading scorer to be disciplined "twice" before the Big East season even began.
It did not need for him to be booted off the team heading into the Big East tourney with an NCAA bid on the line.
It did not need him to hit rock bottom in scoring and overall play in the strecth run of the season.
It did not need him to embarrass Rico Hines on national TV on the day his coach was attending his father's funeral.

I wish him the best but not at St. John's! My money is on he does not return. WHY? By some accounts, D'Lo had a 2 year plan for himself at SJ. Only his poor play has possibly changed that plan. If he returns, it will be to self-serve his own ambition, and not that of the "team". Fool me once.........
With Sanchez, Sampson, Branch, Pointer, Obekpa and the outside shooting of Hooper, this team will still be an NCAA team next year in the "New Big East". I am for a fresh start for Harrison, just not at SJ. SJ needs a fresh start also, with a new guard and I prefer that guard to be a new player without baggage.
UCLA made the same mistake last year and allowed a player that hurt the team back, only to see him leave because a leopard does not shed his spots yada, yada.
Paint me a skeptic on D'Lo returning. And.....he may not be the only one.
No matter, we will have a scholarship to give next year.

This is fantastic news!! We need Harrision next year. I am expecting big things from him.

But unless I'm missing something, D'Angelo hasn't stated that he'll be back next season. All he's said is that he won't be leaving now.

It's taking me a long time to post since I first saw the announcement on SNY yesterday. It was hard to believe, especially after the Sanchez news. I have always liked the kid even though I shuttered each time D'Lo shook his head to a referee or looked argumentive with the staff. Which makes me curious as to Harrison's behavior in high school; we know his aggressive attitude and poor behaviour didn't start at St. John's.
Here we go again with the posters who belittle his play - can't shoot consistently behind the 3 point line, doesn't score against better competition and out for himself. Well, I'm sorry I like this kid, especially his competitiveness. Don't tell me you wanted the ball in anyone else's hands when we needed a score. I'm not making excuses for this kid's problems but hopefully he returns with a new attitude. And why not?

Agree, warts and all, he was the one who we could count on in crunch time. 1,000 point scorer in two years is great and hard to replace. I assume his suspension was warranted, but let's not say he sucked or won't be missed. Ask other BE coaches.

Well he sucked ever since they played @ G-Town. I went game by game, and take the USF (who is garbage) game away.
He has shot 14-65, 6-32 from 3-pnt range. Those #s suck. I know you`ll say something to defend him but it doesn`t what you say. The #s speak for themselves.
Yeah let me shoot 18 times in a game, I think I could hit 5 time, say 2 of those are 3pnt range which would be 10pnts. Go to the line 6time and hit on 4 See there`s my 14pnts even though I didn`t shoot good.
You could want him back but there`s nothing great about him.

If he does come back then he better be doing alot of soul searching because if he comes back and repeats his damn bs then there will not be a 3rd chance

Excellent, excellent post. I too would like to see Harrison succeed".......... Elsewhere. Watching the PC game you could see how much better the team played as a TEAM without him. DLo's selfish play and poor attitude has made the season all about him, not about the team. We're it not for DLo and all the energy by the staff that went into controlling his temperament, guys such as Balamou, would be future along in their development. I am certain that Lavin is enjoying his job more with out DLo on the court. As 72 said, a Leopard doesn't change his spots.

You guys are portraying the kid as Judas. He is a young immature punk (like thousands of other kids) that just happens to be one of St.Johns best basketball players ever. (yes ever- his stats speak for that)
We need his help if we are looking to make a run next year. (obviously without his attitude) Please give up the silly comments that Hooper and Marco will help us and fill in for him. That is just not going to happen.
People make mistakes. Give him a pass.- Words of encouragement when you see the kid. Think of your own closet dirt. It is nothing compared to his attitude.
Writing all the negative posts about the kid is just not cool.

Let this be a valuable lesson to him and hopefully he will come out stronger in November!

I agree. Best way to learn is to fail, figure out why and come back even stronger.
Difficult for these young athletes to stay on top of things, be happy, and handle
all kinds of distractions.
STJ will have a hell of a team next year with Harrison, Sampson and Sanchez.
That is three very good players !!!

Add Obekpa, Dom, and Branch and pray for a back up point guard.

Oh please, you fail to realize other teams are keying in on him and are not letting him breathe, so no if that happened to you you would turn the ball over 25 times and "wouln't shoot good" at all
