Lutheran. His transfer home was somewhat of a trifecta, with his younger hs teammate, the intensely recruited Wayne McKoy choosing St. John's, and transfer Bernard Rencher of Brooklyn who left Notre Dame to come home.
Carter was a first round pick of the Knicks, and played several years in the NBA. He graduated St. John's in 1980, went on to become a respected assistant principal, and died tragically young from a heart attack.
Heron is certainly a great get, but he is not nearly as well known around NYC as Carter was, also considering that LI Lutheran was a powerhouse hs team at the time.
All from memory. Apologies if I made any errors
R.i.p. Reggie , one if the classiest kids to ever play here
Amen, Beast. (And Reggie's yet another guy whose jersey should be hanging in CA.)
And for what it's worth, designating Walter Berry as a transfer isn't quite accurate. Truth enrolled and took classes at St. John's after graduating high school. Following one year at SJU, he transferred to San Jacinto JC in order to fulfill NCAA academic requirements. After doing so, he "transferred" back to St. John's.
Perhaps the two images ingrained in my memory of Reggie was the image that Otis conjured up of Reggie desperately trying to draw an offensive foul as Orr scored the winning basket, and seeing Reggie at commencement, in his cap and gown like any other student, cap a little awkwardly off center on his head the way many of us looked, and very proud to have graduated on time.
I for one would be for that banner 100%. Great role model in every way for our athletes.
The charge call on Reggie was one of the worst ever, one that will forever be etched in our collective memory -- especially coming against Syracuse and on our home court.
As for the addition of more "legacy" players -- something I've been bitching about for years -- maybe our new AD will have a positive outlook on that.
Some colleges with a major athletic programs literally have a wall of fame with dozens if not hundreds of athletes honored with plaques. I've been pushing hard for the school to establish a permanent HOF where such accolades and memorabilia can be permanently displayed in a high tech, top notch "museum" on campus.
