Guys on Matt’s Radar

You're right, very impressive. Must have used the redshirt year between Oakland and NC AT&T to really develop his game. Looks good.
Significant improvement from his first 2 years: 2pt range % improved from 41% in ‘17-‘17 to 59% this season: 29% from 3pt range this year versus few attempts previously: 48% FT % last year versus 78% this season; 1.4 reb/g last year versus 7.7/game this season.
Would seem to be a very nice pickup.
As a replacement for Owens we would lose 3 inches in height (6'8 vs 6'11) but gain 83 lbs in weight (233 vs 150).
But we gain a lot more offense and somebody who can help spread the floor for Shamorie and Simon.

If he comes I hope he gets more than 6 shots a game. I will talk about that on Twitter every single day

Davion Mitchell - transfer from Auburn
Kam McGusty - transfer from Oklahoma
Femi Olujobi - North Carolina A&T
Omer Yurtseven - NC State (maybe the best transfer available)
Marcus Carr - Pitt

I am sure more to be added. Femi O a grad big to pay attention to
Really do appreciate all the work you put into collecting and providing this information in one spot. Thanks.
Yes Paultz. This info very helpful! Thank you!

I agree ‘13.
Admittedly, such optimism is based on 1 year production at a lower competitive level of college hoops and highlight clips, but this guy seems a better ‘fit’ than Tariq with some bang underneath, better shooting production from 2% range, a better re kinder, and better at the FT line.
Again, it wasn’t the BEC, but he also had very solid production against several high majors.
Hope we can get him.

When do we get a thread about guys on the staffs radar? Also does anyone on staff plan on making it to a high school game again to evaluate talent or are we sticking to this transfer story?

I year ago we were raving about the likes of

Nassir Little, SF,
Moses Brown
RJ Barrett
Bol Bol, F
Jahvon Quinnerly, PG
Alan Griffin,
J'Raan Brooks, PF,
Jordan Brown, PF, .
Luther Muhammad
Naz Reid, C,
Luguentz Dort,

And now we're getting pumped up about these guys on matt's radar?
Has the program fallen this far?

Have you checked the 2019 recruiting section? We're certainly still in the mix on plenty of legit names. This post is just about a snapshot of what Matt is currently going after in the transfer route, since we all know that's a huge need right now. Clam down people!!

There is nothing wrong with the list that TIS provided. It is true. Doesn’t mean that we can’t have a good team next year and a better high school recruiting class next year.

At this point I am not looking for replacements for Owens but solid big man grad transfers that can score a little and rebound. With at least 3 roster spots available I think we can afford to find 2 of those type players if practicable to pair with Keita.

Tom almost every kid you list is a top 25 kid. I applaud the staff for trying to get top level talent but reality is we have gotten 1 top 25 high school kid in 14 years , being Rysheed Jordan. And he was available because almost no top program went after him.
Yes staff struck out with all top 25 talent , as is the norm, but still secured commitments from Roberts, Williams and DE. Maybe that is the best we can do at this stage and yes that is how far this program has fallen.

Best scenario this spring:

1) add 1 quality grad transfer preferably a big (Trey Porter/Olujobi)

2) add 1 quality sit transfer.(McGusty/Yurtseven)

3) add 1 new incoming quality freshman (maybe one of the UCONN kids Emmitt Matthews/Kisunas)

Insert your own name.if you prefer.

Add them to the current roster and incoming players (assume Ponds returns) and they are ready to roll next year and set up for good 2019 class as well.
Not "preferably a big".

Here's the deal......either we get at least one immediately eligible big or next season is over before it starts.
I think we need two bigs for next season, a grad transfer and a freshman who decommitted from somewhere or two grad transfers, and then bringing a guy like McGusty would be ideal.

Femi Olujobi looks like a guy who could be a low double digit scorer in the Big East. Would be a definite upgrade from Tariq.

It still baffles me that fans expect us to be landing highly rated recruits of this caliber. We have had 3 straight losing seasons, we haven't won a NCAA tournament game in 2 decades, and have a very unestablished staff. Remind me how we should be winning recruiting battles for top kids?

Instead of going after top 25 talent , we should go after players rated between 50 and 100. Much better percentage of landing, but still good players. After we put together some winning seasons go after the highest talent.. Striking out on studs isn’t going to do us any good, except occupy the time of our one recruiter.
Sit out guard to pursue perhaps
Paultz, you are truly channeling your inner Yoda! :)

a year ago, of that list of top 25 guys I think the staff was only seriously pursuing 2 or 3 (Muhamad, J.brown, N.Little). The writing was already on the wall for Brown and Reid. Muhammad was the most serious and I'm not sure he was a top 25 anyway. I think he was top 50 or maybe 75 depending upon the list. That is the guy they spent the most time on and thought were in the driver's seat with. From what I was told and seems more obvious now, Quinerly was NEVER an option. Brooks was not discussed. We swooped in on an opportunity. Little they were serious about but once he BLEW UP, it was a dog fight with blue bloods and depending upon who you believe, he was always going to an Addidas school anyway and some people were playing out staff the whole time. From my amateur perspective, he's the #1 guy in his class by a good margin.

I'm sorry it is a fair complaint. A big part of the reason Lavin was fired was because of his recruiting or lack thereof you cannot simply excuse the current staff's lack of success as that is just the way it is at SJU.

Also the failure to target and follow thru on key recruits and continued focus on transfers is partly due at least to the laziness and staff screwup (see Slice) of the current regime.

You cannot simply dismiss that as "Oh we never get top 25 recruits anyway." That is a copout.

"Remind me how we should be winning recruiting battles for top kids?"

Well it is certainly not with guys that never recruited (or coached) a day in their basketball lives!
I was very encouraged by Mullin hiring Slice and Matt to offset his zero experience in recruiting. In the first year, yes, we were associated with a lot of elite names. If we got one Shamorie Ponds every year this program would be very competitive. Once the schism with Mullin, Slice and Matt developed we became transfer dependent which is what Matt does well. The slack was never picked up by Mitch Richmond or Greg St Jean so in that regard TIS is 100% correct. We just don't have a team approach to recruiting with the head coach front and center of the pursuit. Hopefully that changes with the 2019 class. Especially if Mitch Richmond follows his heart, and family, back to California.
