Greg W Enters Portal

Anderson's playing the guys he thinks have the best chance at getting a W, period.  I think he could care less if he recruited them or not.  Wusu was probably our best straight line north-south driver at times, and made some massive plays down the stretch of various games we won in conference.

Also, I'd welcome back Greg W. with open arms.  He is the one transfer I don't understand at all.  There is a definite role for him as a starter IMO with significant minutes if healthy.  Whatever happens, just hope we get clarity sooner than later.  Our staff needs to know if we can pencil him into the backcourt or focus on filling the slot.

Not sure why people feel the need to throw shade at Marcus & Greg on the way out. They were key members of both CMA teams and gave us way more positives than negatives on the court and were exemplary teammates off the court. Team will miss them whether some think so or not. I hope we bring in new talent who will make us love next year's team but for many of us who are long time Johnny fans, Marcus and Greg were the kind of Johnnies who made us proud.

If you're referring to my posts about their inconsistencies, I'm not trying to throw shade on them at all, I'm just stating what was said during game time threads about them, and the majority of the time it wasn't me saying it.

I'm not sure why this is, but every fan base has people that do this, they will post every single thing a guy ever did wrong during the game all during the season, then if that player gets traded or transfers to another school in the off-season, all of a sudden that player was the best thing since sliced bread and there's no way the team can move forward without them, and anybody that says anything about them other than how great they were during their time here is just a bad person.  You can appreciate what somebody did and still point out issues they had without it being malicious.

Fair enough MP and I wasn't referring to any one post, but a series of posts by different posters. Probably just me, but I remember the difficulties these guys had getting any daylight under previous coach and how well they developed the last two years while being wonderful representatives of the school. I believe Greg, in particular, is underrated not overrated by many on this board. As far as picking at every mistake they made during game threads, don't think that was me other than begging Greg to shoot more lol!

Wonder if Greg leaving the door open to returning means he's not getting the interest he was hoping. It was also mentioned he had a girlfriend at St John's. That has to be a factor as well.

I hear ya, and I do understand where you're coming from.  That's why I've been outspoken on the rule change, because it does suck when you see a kid develop and watch his growth and then all of a sudden he's gone.  That's the fun of college basketball IMO, watching kids develop from year 1 and seeing where they are at in year 3 or 4. I fell in love with college basketball in the mid-late 90's that's when you had kids that were at school for 3 and 4 years and all the tournament teams featured kids you got to know over the years, so trust me I completely get it.

Greg has all the talent in the world but has never asserted himself on a consistent basis.  My hope/expectation was that he would do that as a senior.  If he did, then he has all-Big East second-team potential.  If he didn't, then it would be more of the same - win you a few games, but not give you enough in others.  Plus he's never healthy.

Marcellus is a valuable contributor off the bench and a role player, who like Greg has some great games and some forgettable ones.

As fond as I am of both players, if they chose to depart then they are not exactly irreplaceable.  Of course, sometimes a known is better than an unknown, and if the staff can't locate suitable replacements then something is better than nothing.  But at the moment the roster is plainly not finished so let's see what happens.

Amen MP, couldn't agree more. For me it was late 60s/early 70s, but we fell in love with college basketball for the exact same reason.

Best post in this thread.  Agree 100%

I also hear rumbling fwiw that the door is not shut on Greg W returning.

Music to my ears! Now if we can just get that elusive big.....

Potential music now, now :)

GWill’s dad just retweeted a fan post encouraging his son coming back to SJU. Think his dad wants him to stay.

Trying not to read too much into it but looks like there’s a chance he comes back

hope he does.

I really hope GW comes back. Between Greg, Posh, Wusu, and Stef Smith, that would be some back court.

Also, I just have a soft spot for him. Seems like a great kid who comes from a great family. I'd like to see someone like him stay the 4 years and graduate from St. John's. Good representation of how things should be done.

I too would like GWill to come back.  I think he’d be smart to.

It's also hard to fully assess Greg without knowing the situation with his back.  Is it a chronic issue likely to cause him problems again next season, or could he possibly start the season with a clean bill of health?

I was thinking about that as well, he's missed multiple games 2 years in a row with back issues.  I've never heard the staff, media, or anyone say if it's something he'll eventually always deal with and may eventually need surgery or if it was just 2 isolated incidents.

A few GW questions.
  • Is Greg eligible for a fifth year at STJ under COVID rules?
  • Does WUSU actually fit better in to the role that we wanted Marcellus to play; banger at the foul line, pick setter, destroyer of 2-3 zones, point forward?
  • Do we have anyone besides Posh to dribble through a trap defense when needed?  McGriff had that skill set.
  • GW could both explode to the basket on a drive and go up quick for a J, but did not get to show much in terms of breaking down defenders and setting up his own shot.  Can he do that and what are Stef Smith's skills in those areas?

1. Yes - this year didn't count for anybody that played
2. No - too short to guard some of the guys Duke did
3. No - not with Dunn leaving as well
4. Don't know

Having said that, I hope Greg comes back. He is a great kid, a very good student and a good team player. We would all like him to assert himself more. I think there's a good chance that he would do so in providing senior leadership.

All of these guys who transferred are outside of our top 3 (Champ, Posh, Wusu). Considering we weren't a Tournament team, they are unlikely to get more minutes than they currently are on a better team. In order to get more minutes they'd likely need to drop down to a mid-major or a power team that's worse than St. John's.

St. John's is likely the best option for most of them. They had a successful year and next year should be better. I'd be very happy to get GW back, I hope he decides to return.

I pray that he returns. It's important to keep our own, especially someone like Greg.
