Greg St. Jean

I was thinking about Duggans bakery.

I think GSJ would have to throw a hail mary and blow a number of people away. Long odds against it, but he does deserve that shot.
I agree beast. He would have to blow a number of people to get the job.
There are some really good guys. Cluess is one. GSJ is another. I root for both to do as well as they can (and get this job if they are the best candidate all things considered) but also know there may be better candidates. It would be really bush league if GSJ isn't given a serious chance to convince people he's the man. Long, long odds, but he deserves that.
Frankly for $2m buyout, GSJ is a better deal. And, there is a much better chance that he is able to re-recruit our existing players. He also is probably more willing to move away fromMullins positionless style

No coach worth hiring is going to perpetuate that positionless crap!

I know most oppose promoting an assistant coach, but Xavier and Butler seem to always go that way and seem to have success. St. Jean has four years under his belt , will be able to retain most of the remaining players, and comes at a bargain price. Get him two or three good assistants and give him a year contract. If he can salvage this train wreck, reward him with longer, more lucrative contract.

One year contact should do wonders for recruiting. Then again we could recruit a team of one and doners. Sounds good to me. I'm all in.

SJU's offensive game plan was pass the ball around 25 feet from the basket until someone throws up a three on a team that wasn't that good a three point shooting group
SJU never came up with a plan to defend bigger teams like trying to press
There were many games in the last half of the season that they just seemed to lay down or didn't have their heads in the game
And now the architect of the game plans is going to be considered for the top job.. How desperate have things gotten?

Those schools don’t fire coaches. They pass off very good situations.

Please note that the players that are endorsing Greg are leaving. Yeah, let us listen to them.

Thread should have died right after Michael Rappaport endorsed him.

I wonder if his presentation offered some surprising reversals for retention. We know Matt was mouthy, and who knows how he influenced Cam. Curious what you would think if LJ, Simon, and Mack all were on board to play for gsj next season? Not saying that's the plan, but what if?

Holy cow! I am so disappointed with even entertaining St. Jean for elevation from assistant to Head Coach. Have you guys watched the last four years? Mullin showed little interest in running the huddles and left the coaching basically to St. Jean.

What results did we have with St. Jean running the huddeles? Did the team pull off miracle wins? Nope. Did the team have great first halves of games, only to completely play like poop in 2nd halves? Yep. This is an indictment on the coaching staff and St. Jean was part of that staff. What players has he recruited where the AD can say he’s a great recruiter? What players have thrown his name as the coach they want to play for? Zero.

The description in his bio says that St. Jean is in charge of scouting, game planning responsibilities, over sees player development. Where have they had great game plans? Did he game plan for DePaul? Did he game plan for Providence? How about the game plan vs Marquette in the Big East Tournament?

Let’s talk about player development. How many players really developed under this coaching staff? Did Ponds develop this year?

I don’t see any positives under St. Jean that warrant any consideration for HC or St. John’s.

In no way am I advocating we hire Greg but I hope the posters who point out “look at our team the last four years with St Jean already coaching them..” in attempt to degrade him realize that coaching from the assistants chair is difficult. In Greg’s case it seemed like he had all the power and leeway from Mullin, but the players I’m sure looked to the head coach. St Jean may have been coaching “this” team but he wasn’t coaching “his” team. Boehiem said it best when he was suspended a few years ago and Hopkins took over and struggled. He said something along the lines of ‘Hopkins was a great coach but right now he’s not coaching his team, he’s coaching my team.’

Now, interview him. Thank him. But go find a proven head coach. Greg will be one but not a sju right now.

Hiring St. Jean at this juncture would be a show of astounding incompetence by this administration.

By all accounts, for the past several years St. Jean has effectively been the head coach of the team! Thus, if Cragg was going to go this route, why not keep Mullin as the “figurehead” head coach with St. Jean effectively running the team, just as things were?

The benefits of this strategy are obvious. The school would have saved $4 million plus on Mullin’s buyout, avoided the horrible press that will result if this hire is truly botched, and possibly preserved the relationship with many of the players, this providing some continuity for next year and avoiding a total rebuild.

Indeed, I would argue that, provided a couple of decent assistants were hired, recruiting would be better with Mullin at the helm in a figurehead capacity than if St. Jean ran the show. Although Mullin appears to have contributed little on the recruiting trail, I do believe there is some cachet to the fact that he is an NBA hall of famer and former GM with connections in the league.

Let me clear, I am in no way suggesting that Mullin should have been kept on. I’m simply saying that if St. Jean is now the guy, there was no reason to get rid of the previous regime.

No way in hell St Jean is getting the job. He got a courtesy interview that's all.

Even if St. Jean were able to effectively maintain most of the roster and prove himself ready to be a head coach, two highly questionable propositions, the hire would be a disaster.

We are looking to build a program. Lilke many, the thought of watching another rebuild makes me sick to my stomach. But next year is unlikely to be successful even if most of the players come back. And I can’t see any way St. Jean will be successful on the recruiting trail. In addition to his own lack of recruiting bonafides, what prospect in their right mind would commit to play for an unproven twenty-something year old head coach, particularly in light of the results the last four years?

Some of you guys have no idea how much of the problem you are.

By all means, GSJ is going to be a HC soon, at some level. Long odds against being here, so you can save the shit for yelling at your wives, kids, grandkids, or neighbors or "friends".

If he does have success, and a few years from now when we have a vacancy for HC again, if history is any indicator, perhaps he ends up at another BE school. Maybe he even becomes the next Jay Wright. I can tell you a few stories of his graciousness and charisma and respect, just like the Jay Wright I've met, but f it, you guys just want to be miserable. You guys say no one reads social media, and are nuts in that regard. Guarantee you he reads all the shit, because he is active as heck on social media, and NONE of his posts are negative.

It's kind of funny, but Steve Lappas was fired by Villanova, yet he's been welcomed back and honored as a former coach by Villanovans. Jay Wright and admin made sure of that, as they did with ALL former coaches. Jay Wright's rule - honor our tradition, all of it. Jay Wright's rule to players - everyone gets respect - walk ons, team managers, teachers, administrators, other students, your parents and friends. A walk on recently told me that. It's apparent.

Could you imagine the reaction here, if there was an announcement that Mike Jarvis would be honored on a night celebrating the elite 8 team, or Fraschilla for building it, Mahoney for being the lead assistant on a team that went to the NCAA's every year, or Lavin for helping drag us out of being far from the dance, or even Norm Roberts for repairing the damage from a dark night in Pittsburgh. Yea, I could imagine it. Shit, vitriol, remembering the worst shit that each had done.

Why doesn't anyone want to come here, to the shiny Big Apple, and MSG, to the school with this great tradition? Because when teams don't win enough here, fans stay home. When we don't win enough here, fans sling shit. When we don't donate enough, the school can't spend the way schools with billion dollar ATHELTIC dept giving can. So yea, wait for Repole to write the check. That'll work.

Yup another speech from BOTE. You deserve the shit sometimes. GSJ doesn't. It's really early for him to get a job like this, and I think he knows that. But he stepped up and asked for that, because he WANTS TO BE HERE, unlike everyone else who says NO. So shit on him for that, than go back to yelling at your wives.

Well said Beast. I’d love GSJ here in some capacity. He is constantly working. Hard to convince me he’s the guy to start landing big recruits etc, but ya never know if he had the right assistants. GSJ was one of the few people actually
coaching the last few seasons. Id like to see him around our program if possible. From all accounts he’s very capable, and Mullin’s style of ball should be no indication of GSJ’s skill set nor style of play as it was the head coach’s style.

The constant theme of this Board is Toxicity . There are about a Dozen posters on here that are committed to negativity at every turn . We all know the most vocal of protagonists and he’s inflamed this Board for too long , without any censure . It seems to me that the most Toxic of posters aren’t Alumni of the University , just Critics . Which we need far less of . Even , if you thought Mullin wasn’t a effective Coach , there is a level of decency that has been absent in much of the criticism . Beast said it well, who would want to Coach here to hear Zaun or others throw the constant stream of crap they do on this program ? Zaun has accomplished his main mission of getting rid of Mullin , now this Board should get rid of Zaun , we don’t need his repetitive negativity . There are enough Program detractors on here already and their views , if free of the nasty personal insults , I guess should be heard . I could ask why but , won’t . As for St Jean, why would any Assistant Coach anywhere , i.e. Scheyer be considered over Greg ? St Jean has a pedigree already in the Coaching fraternity , notably due to his hard work here and some from his Family . He will move up the Ladder to Head Coaching in measurable time , either in College or the NBA . He will be a Winner when he does . He has the tools . And , no he is not tainted by his 4 years here . He played the hand he was dealt . There is a erroneous belief advocated by the program detractors that this was the most talented team in the BE . It wasn’t . The collective flaws in the line up showed early on , this group would struggle in a very physical BE Conference . It did . Frankly , the Seton Hall fiasco aside , Mullins team should have been a 3 Red place finisher at 9-9 . St Jean’s game plan , if you will, helped beat Marquette twice and Villanova once . And , should have had 2 wins over SH . And , despite 2 losses to DePaul in the season , Chris and Greg figured out how to contain Strus in the BE opener that we should have never been in , if Mike Stephens hadn’t blown his wrong whistle . So , feel good that you Critics contributed to the Program’s greatest player being dismissed or resigned by all the negativity spewed on here . Yes, there were legitimate criticisms of Mullin’s tenure . His Recruiting wasn’t good and we lacked the size required in the BE and didn’t have the consistent outside 3 point shooter that is necessary to be competitive in College BB today . Mullin’s absences ? How much time was he away for his Brother’s illness ? Or , other family issues that are personal and should not be delved into ? Maybe he should have taken a Year off, like Lavin did when he had Cancer ? Do any of us really know ? There are more fans of the BB program than are posting on this Board . Many stay away because of guys like Zaun and his supporters . So , Beast and Brian W and others that are Alums and fans , don’t accept all the crap posted here . It’s not worth it . Frankly , I think the Mods have given way too much leeway to a few naysayers . They should act now and jettison the most egregious .Otherwise this Board will self destruct like BEB did when Fun and others like him , ran amok . It’s gotten nearly that bad . I think the Mods have leaned over backwards to create a forum for fans . But , how can you be a fan when all you do is hijack this Board and promote negativity on almost every situation . Whether it be Cragg , St Jean, Mullin , Richmond , Cluess who is totally innocent at this point . It nuts !

Freedom of speech within reason is more appealing.
