Greg St. Jean

Doesn't say much for St. Jean's chances, when his thread has devolved into reminiscing about defunct chain stores.
I was thinking about Duggans bakery.

I think GSJ would have to throw a hail mary and blow a number of people away. Long odds against it, but he does deserve that shot.
I agree beast. He would have to blow a number of people to get the job.
There are some really good guys. Cluess is one. GSJ is another. I root for both to do as well as they can (and get this job if they are the best candidate all things considered) but also know there may be better candidates. It would be really bush league if GSJ isn't given a serious chance to convince people he's the man. Long, long odds, but he deserves that.

SS&G, sounds like we're contemporaries except you have by far the superior memory to come up with some of those - hadn't heard or thought of Bohacks, Korvette's or Bonomo's Turkish taffy in many a moon; definitely brought a smile to my face amidst all he current uncertainty. Thanks for that!
NC
Just noticed your post
We should get some of our contemporaries together at a convenient location one day

Also
Memories, sharing, lighthearted stuff = such a nice break from the serious or contentious posts that sometimes surface here

Can we just enjoy the excitement and opportunity we have to move away from the CM years which so many seemed to have detested

All the best
Thanks for your post
Go Storm!

(PS remember the whistle rings?)

St Jean seems like a nice kid who clearly works hard and has a bright future ahead of him.

But putting aside the fact that (a) he is grossly under-qualified to be the head coach of a high-major D1 team and (b) his appointment to HC would be followed by a mass exodus of SJU season ticket holders----putting all that aside, do you really think that Cragg is going to appoint as HC the hand-picked assistant (and personal family friend) of the guy he just fired, resulting in what is now an apparently toxic relationship with the administration?

If so, I want what you're smoking.

Is it possible that St. Jean can be retained as an interim HC for next year? Perhaps we can keep the core here and revisit the HC situation next year? Players seem to have his back.

? If you are speaking to me, all I was advocating is that he get a shot at interviewing if he wants. It's the correct and classy thing to do. The better we treat him now, our long term relationship with him may reap big dividends.

Courtesy interview seems wise under circumstances. The guy has really been under the gun recently and as noted players respect him.

A 1 year lame duck or trial. I would say this, as crazy as that is. I have a feeling that LJ would stay, and Simon may reverse himself, and I wouldn't totally rule out Cam Mack (although much lower possibility)

If you are saying he deserves an opportunity to sit down with Cragg and discuss what his next career move should be, then yes, of course. But he does not deserve a shot at the HC job here. That's just crazy talk. No offense intended.

Do we really want to have to go through all this again a year from now? Also, if St. Jean knows he is getting canned next year anyways, how much work and effort is he really going to put into the program? It's best to just start over and take our lumps now.

Wouldn’t he work hard to try and keep the job?

Today's interview should ONLY be for courtesy purposes. That's it! Personally, I think it's a waste of time that could be used interviewing someone else.

The more this goes on, the more I'm wondering whether Cragg has a true plan going forward or coaches are afraid of the job. If I was a betting man, then I'd lean towards the former than the latter (as, I sense some coaches who I think would AND could work here hasn't been contacted).

It should be Cragg informing Greg that Cluess is coming aboard, and that we value his knowledge and experience with the program and would like to keep him on as an AC.

Nope! He hardly every recruited.

Not an acceptable outcome, even as Plan Z, if the Mullin ouster was contemplated prior to the end of the season and orchestrated by SJU administration. Would be a complete and utter failure.

If there was a surprise? Frankly as a Plan K maybe there are worse ideas than considering waiting a year and doing the search you'd expect Cragg to be capable of doing, which would begin the instant GSJ signed on as interim HC.

Theory being don't make a bad situation worse by doubling down just because you got a curveball and now time and/or supply aren't on your side. If you don't like the candidates available currently, take the time to go find one you like. Get it right as opposed to getting it fast.

As a season ticket holder I don't like the idea of interim anything, especially when the interim is a guy who in reality is at best a third assistant for a non-elite program right now.

But he's uniquely positioned with the players such that while we search for a coach next year could actually be better than what it might be if we hire a sub-optimal coach for a full rebuild.

Hopefully we aren't in fact limited by time or supply and can still get quality plan B or C. But if for some reason can't, would rather wait another year to exhaust options than settle now. What's adding one more after the better part of the last 18? Time to get one right.

This thread actually hurts my head hurts more than the Cluess thread.
This is not the NBA.
You don't do interim head coaches in college.
It's a recruiting death knell.
You can't recruit the current senior class, transfers or Jucos let alone kids two, three, four, five years away from college where the real recruiting is.

Some of y'all don't even have to actually say anything definitive, but some of y'all messages are conveying "mediocrity," IMO.

I've already gone on record by saying once I start to accept things for what they've been for the past 20 years AND be fine with it, along with the school continuing to be clueless, then I'll stop following (and watching) St. John's men's basketball and will just watch college hoops as a fan.

In no way should we bring in St. Jean as a part of our immediate future. Maybe, in the distant future, then fine. But not immediate future. Nope!

Well than maybe we should hire Crazy Eddie! His prices are INSANE!
I just wonder what the average age of this site is when most of our fans would get that.
My brother is 40 and absolutely knows who Crazy Eddie is, so there's a good chance someone in their late 30s would know. That doesn't sound like too old of an average fan base to me.B)
For a guy 40 that is just pop culture. They declared bankruptcy in 1989 and was liquidated. By then they were on fumes. They went the way of E.J. Korvettes, Two Guys, and Wetson Burgers (who should have dominated the McDonalds and Burger King market)
