So many businesses and cultural establishments have gone and/or been forgotten - just as with coaches :)

John’s Bargain Store
Bohack Supermarkets
The Daily Mirror and the Herald Tribune (from whose sports pages and boxscores I learned to read as a boy in the 1950s)
Bonomo’s Turkish Taffy
The Brooklyn Dodgers and the trolleys that folks would try to dodge
Marbles and yo yos
Keds sneakers
WMCA Good Guys
Trans World and Pan Am Airlines

Helmet less hockey players
Pink slabs of gum in baseball card packs
Rheingold Beer brewery
Haberdasher (hat) stores
Ball players leaving their gloves on the playing field in between innings
And so forth

And oh yes, hopefully gone and forgotten are mediocre seasons at Alumni Hall

Today's interview should ONLY be for courtesy purposes. That's it! Personally, I think it's a waste of time that could be used interviewing someone else.

The more this goes on, the more I'm wondering whether Cragg has a true plan going forward or coaches are afraid of the job. If I was a betting man, then I'd lean towards the former than the latter (as, I sense some coaches who I think would AND could work here hasn't been contacted).
Totally off base post. St. Jean wasn't let go, Mullin was. Unlike the last several coaches (and university President), St. Jean lives a couple of blocks from campus so he can be close to campus whenever. He breathed this job 24/7, and absolutely loves it here. He has gone so far as to say that St. John's feels like his own school, since there wasn't as much going on at the school he went to. Right now EVERYONE has vacated - Chris, Mitch, Matt, and GSJ as a loyal employee is sticking around and speaking to players and their parents. HE could easily be home in California working the phones for his next job.

As a loyal employee, if he asked a shot at the HC job, and if his employer denied it, then that employer would suck and deserve to get fired. The guy has a plan and deserves a shot to present it. You guys really kill me. For all you know, having gone to school in CT, his plan as Jim Calhoun coming as one assistant or some other creative knock your socks off signed off on plan that would make even the worst cynics clap like seals. Regardless if it is that, or nothing as spectacular, a loyal employee of the university deserves that opportunity. Good for him that he wants to be here. God knows, a ton of coaches and assistants don't want to come near this place, and don't think that doesn't factor into making Cragg's job immeasurably harder.

You are correct in that he deserves an interview as a current assistant. But in what universe would he get the job? If you say "well he actually did the heavy coaching duties angway" then Mullin was basically stealing money from the university. There will be a new coach. Likely a lesser candidate because our image in the college basketball world is next to rock bottom. That new coach needs to sell a vision of his system, his recruiting skills, his relationship with former players and most importantly have a track record that is not obfuscated by inferior competition. That GSJ has a thread here is proof we have had a low bar here for years. Finally, in all honesty, GSJ was part of the problem and not the solution. His recruiting was peripheral to all the work Matt was doing. Our mediocre defense is partly his doing. He is part of a failed experiment. Let's get serious and move on.

You are conflating 2 different concepts here. The first is whether he deserves a sit-down with Cragg. The second is whether he deserves the head coaching job. Of course he deserves to sit down with Cragg and he wants to "shoot for the stars" and make his case for head coach, hey- why not? He just doesn't deserve the job. IMO, of course.

I have never doubted his enthusiasm, I doubt few people on this board do. By the way, staying on and remaining on good terms with Cragg is probably the smartest thing he could do right now, given that Cragg is well positioned to help him find his next job. Why go home and "work the phones" when you've got a guy down the hallway who has 30 years of Duke connections he can draw on to help you out.

If you listened in the huddles when Mullin was mic'd up, did you ever hear anything he said that any CYO coach wouldn't have. I worked at the Whitestone store for a while. Always one of the top stores in the chain in terms of revenue.

Worked there while I was at St. John's part time and then when I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, took a full time job with Genovese first as Assistant Store Manager at the Steinway Street store in Astoria and then Store Manager at the 21st store in Long Island City. But the brutal hours of retail eventually got to me and I took a job at New York Life. Nice to be talking about this instead of all the noise about our new coach, whoever he may be.

Agree, Beast. It's rare where a great player becomes a great coach, in any sport. Many times their abilities and skills are innate and it's difficult to teach someone else what has always come naturally to you. That's true not just in sports, but also in business. Great salespeople do not automatically make great sales managers. I applaud Chris's desire to want to help the program and turn it around. He just wasn't cut out to be a coach.

I'm sure this has been said a lot, but Greg has shown a lot of character and love for the program by sticking around. I don't know if he has a future at St. John's (I hope he does), but people will notice what he is doing now when others would have cut and run.

GSJ will always have a special place in my STJ memory, like Kyle Cuff. Guys who stuck it out through the darker time lines.

I'm not conflating anything. I'm not asserting that he should be given the head coaching job. That is a far far reach, but if he is getting an interview, it should be treated as a serious interview and he given the chance to present himself. He almost certainly would be rejected at this point in his career, and no one doubts that. Why work the phones for your next job? Are you serious? Do you really think Cragg would be spending his time finding GSJ a job, and if he does offer to help he should not look on his own? MAybe you should suggeest he goes to our career assistance office for help.

My point was that it is hard to definitively assert that he was part of the problem here. It's generally accepted that 1) Our bench was thin 2)we had no front line presence to speak of 3) We played well enough at points during the season to get excited about this team, beating VIllanova and Marquette twice and being ranked briefly and 4) We played horribly down the stretch. If you blame him for the team playing poorly, then you have to credit him for beating the 3 other tourney teams in conference. That's all I'm saying.

He will likely not get the job, and for the reason of inexperience as HC at this level. It's a good reason not to hire him. However if Mullin was as bad as so many of our posters insist, it's possible that both Matt and GSJ were bright lights in an otherwise disappointing season.

But he does not deserve a shot at the HC job here. That's just crazy talk. No offense intended.

I am saying why would he go home and work the phones? He can presumably work the phones on his own connections from Queens while simultaneously retaining goodwill with his current, well-connected employer. And there is no reason to think that once Cragg has found a new coach, which should be shortly, he can't make a couple of calls on GSJ's behalf. Why would GSJ want to cut that avenue off?

I admire GSJ's dedication and loyalty to St. John's and thank him for it.
No need to throw out the baby with the bathwater.
Perhaps he gets a spot on the new staff and learns from an experienced HC.
But, it seems to me that he would also have to become more involved in the recruiting aspects of college hoops as well.

I'm OK with that as long as, you say, he is more involved with recruiting. Much more involved.

Whatever the outcome of our coaching search, I have a lot of respect for GSJ. Pretty sure this guy is going to be successful in the future.

There's one candidate out there who could afford to keep a super young non-recruiter on staff, mostly because he's one of the greatest coaches of all time. I'd be OK with St. Jean sticking around and absorbing things like a sponge if you holdouts would be OK with the school hiring one of literally only two guys available who would have us back in no time.

That candidate can bring Ms. Sypher with him and demand that an on-campus Olive Garden be written into his contract.
I remember my mom taking me to a place in Manhattan she called an Automat (I think) back in the late 80s. I thought it was such a cool place. She's told me when she was younger there were a lot more of them. That's all I can recollect about it cuz I was still fairly young. Just for some reason that place has always just remained in my head as if she took me yesterday.
