Gonzaga

Gonzaga's here (Tucson) next Saturday. They might be taking tonight's game lightly.

Let's see .... sure .... they "could" be overlooking a storied Big East program in the Finals of the PreSeason NIT at Madison Square Garden because they are thinking about 3 games down the road (8 days from now).

But I doubt it.

That being said, I AM looking forward to the visit to McKeon ... then the visit to Pauley Pavilion the following Saturday. Also looking forward to hosting Arizona and UCLA in the Kennel next season.

Keys to the game:
We need to take care of the ball.
We need to execute on offense.
We need to get out on their shooters.
And we need to limit their offensive rebounds.

Unfortunately the last 3 have not been our strong suit in recent years

Not to jump the gun, but would we crack the top 25 with a win? I've seen a bunch of ranked teams go down lately, so I'd think we'd pass a bunch, including Minnesota who got votes.

It would be great PR but unless it impresses some recruits the ranking does not change our uncertain future since the team will be gutted of talent. As I and others have stated, it is not about making the Dance this year but evaluating management for the basketball organization's future. This is a business and the staff will be evaluated on both past performance and future potential. If it appears that they were a failure last year as a team when we had the most talent in years and are being out worked on the recruiting front, whatever this team does this year will be moot.

Seriously, are some people totally incapable of having any enjoyment in life? This response has nothing to do with my original post about potentially being ranked. If you're this miserable about the team and can't even be happy about a win, then youre probably better off not even bothering with the team.

We will be in the top 25 if we win bc we will have a win over a top 40 Minnesota team and a top 10 gonzaga team....which would be great for the program....but I also share concern for the future the cupboard is very bare when we are talking 2015 incoming class ...so let's enjoy this now it can be years before we see this again

Guys, I've said this previously and I may be wrong but I don't think that Obepka and Sheed are going anywhere after this year. Obepka still needs to develop a consistent shot from 10ft to 12ft away to play effectively in the NBA and Sheed also needs to be much more consistent with his outside shooting to go pro. Both will benefit immensely from one more year in college. The only reason why Jakarr is in the NBA is because the Sixers are the worst team in NBA history and he doesn't even play. he's inactive every night. Kentucky can beat the Sixers.

Looking forward to next year, if CO and Sheed stay, a backcourt of Sheed, Doughty, Balamou and Sampson or Carter or a guy like LoVett is not bad to go along with CO, ADR, Jones and a Freeman and Nicola Akele. This thing can be pieced together nicely if they stay.

I'm not sure I agree. The NBA has consistently reminded us that it will draft on potential as well. I think that Obekpa has demonstrated this season that his his shooting form has improved enough such that he is a project that can develop into a solid shooter. His athletic talent, plus just showing that he can improve might be enough to make an NBA team.

Jordan I think has more work to do. His shooting form is fine, he just has to get more consistent and stop with the turnover and dribbling into big guys in the paint. He probably needs more work and another level because it's so hard to make it as a PG in the NBA.

Unfortunately for us and fortunately for them their potential alone will get them drafted. Maybe not where they think they belong but the money looks good anyway.

Its always interesting to see the opinion of an opposing teams fan base. The Zag's are not taking us lightly at all.

"If you watched St. Johns / Minnesota, we are in for a ride. These guys play like it's a fight and they are quick as cats. Their big man gets it in the hole. They look rough and play rough. We better be careful with the ball, they have extremely fast hands and cause a lot of turnovers and draw fouls like crazy. They charge into a defender that is moving and draw the foul. This will be a tough game. They are just nasty. "

Why are we worrying about 2015 now? I'm still worrying about this year. And when next year comes around, who knows, Lavin could surprise us. And why not.

I think you are right, and we would certainly deserve to crack the top 25. These polls are subjective, and great programs get a lot more love in the polls than a downtrodden one. In any case, polls are meaningless right now. I'm just hoping for a strong performance. My biggest fear is that we are too thin up front to withstand foul trouble by Obekpa and Pointer.

Right on Beast, which brings up my point again. Zone or man? Can Pointer possibly guard their big man, Ronkonski while Obepka concentrates on Witjier(sp). I'm guessing we start with a zone to prevent fouls.

I love that quote. They are just nasty. I hope we play up to that reputation of a team, that even if we don't win, you are going to be exhausted in the process of beating us. I don't want another season full of "good losses" - that would make me a bit  but I would love it if this team made every game seem like it was a tournament game.

Well with the exception of teams we should crush...then I don't want a tournament game. I want to see a 40 point spread - which we are capable of.

Anyway, opening night of HS ball here so off to work I go. Looking forward to watching the DVR'd win when i get home.

Keys to the game Part 2:
We need to be able get the ball inside.
We need to get out in transition.
We need to defend the post.
And we need to limit dribble penetration.

I say we play man, since we are always late to the ball in zone, causing us to give away too many easy baskets and commit too many fouls. Let's hope that Dlo and Sheed go to the hoop strong but intelligently, not forcing it in, but using their quickness and court vision to get us easy looks.

no flagrant or intentional called. Looks totally intentional to me. Knee to the face.

I'm coming sitting in section 110 I believe. Anyone heading somewhere beforehand?

Even if unintentional, it is flagrant, and so reckless it's deserving of ejection.

Gonzaga has never had a Scout.com Top 25 recruiting class. The kid that was injured (broken jaw/concussion) is a true freshman and Gonzaga's highest rated recruit ... ever (#24 at espn.com). Josh was averaging 23 mpg and is a huge part of Gonzaga's future (and present). His loss hurts the Zags.

That there was no "flagrant" called is a travesty.

it wasn't simply continuation of motion. He popped his knee into is face at the last moment. That was intentional.

I agree it was a terrible non flagrant call. Bob knight thought it was terrible as well.

Nice win vs Minnesota the other night for sure. Thats the type of early season win this team didn't get last year.

It would be a tremendous win to beat the Zags. I walked away impressed having watching them vs Georgia the other night. Their ball movement was exceptional. We will have to play our best game of the last two seasons to win.

I'm really enjoying being able to see our key guys play major minutes this year. In the past when we had more depth, guys were coming in and out constantly, and some of them were getting too much rest and not enough minutes. I'm noticing improvement in play by Jordan and Obekpa this year which is why I think this year's team is better than last year's. Sampson and Sanchez did not have major impacts on the floor last year, I don't care where they are playing now. Sanchez tried to be a perimeter guy. My only regret is that Thomas is ineligible. We would of really been able to hang our hats on defense and rebounding if we had him.
