Gonzaga

Oh my god who the hell cares. We won a big game last night and today is thanksgiving, can the pessimism go away for one day please. There's a good chance we lose to Gonzaga so you guys can have your fill tomorrow night. Have a good day everyone

It's not pessimism, Jack. It's being balanced. Just like last week when you were proclaiming the program dead because we didn't land Briscoe. I just have a problem with bipolar fans. It was a nice win, and if we win our winnable games we will have a good season. It's nothing to be ecstatic about and nothing to complain about either. Just be realistic.

Sensible post Beast

Not to jump the gun, but would we crack the top 25 with a win? I've seen a bunch of ranked teams go down lately, so I'd think we'd pass a bunch, including Minnesota who got votes.

It would be great PR but unless it impresses some recruits the ranking does not change our uncertain future since the team will be gutted of talent. As I and others have stated, it is not about making the Dance this year but evaluating management for the basketball organization's future. This is a business and the staff will be evaluated on both past performance and future potential. If it appears that they were a failure last year as a team when we had the most talent in years and are being out worked on the recruiting front, whatever this team does this year will be moot.

Wow, this post is the definition of pessimism. We just won a huge game and showed many great things that we never thought would happen, and all you can say is how it doesn't matter because we are losing players next year?
Be fair. This was an impressive comeback game against a decent team, not a great one. A "huge" win would be beating Gonzaga. I was just pleased to avoid becoming more irrelevant. A strong showing v Gonzaga would be a "huge" boost. It is quite ok for 72 to put things in perspective re: where the program is. Although I share his concerns, all I can do is pull for these guys & hopefully enjoy some success this season. Next year seems easily defined, unless miracles occur on recruiting end. However, let's leave that for another day. Go Johnnies!

Fair enough. I think it is a huge win because it is something we haven't been able to do in a while, which is win an OOC game against a top 50 opponent. And to be honest, we did it pretty handily. That is a great sign for this team and I hope it continues. While I agree that the program has question marks going forward, just try to enjoy the present.

Lol, you are putting words into my mouth. all I said after the Briscoe thing was that I think Lavin needs to be gone after this season unless we make it to the sweet 16. I still feel that way. "Proclaiming the program dead"??? Just stop man. People are being realistic. They are being excited for our team cause we won a big game? Damn, somebody shoot them, god forbid we get excited.

Everyone is aware of our weaknesses. Maybe they don't want to discuss them right after our first big win in awhile. And on thanksgiving too.

From the sbnation piece:(thanks NYCRedmen):

"...Gonzaga has three great outside shooters...."

Perhaps our biggest concern.

Once saw Jerry Houston, former LaSalle great, lead the Johnnies to an upset of #1 Michigan with Cazzie Russell at MSG. After that, anything can happen. Go Johnnies!

Singling out Jerry, because I like him :)

ST. JOHN'S DEFEATS #1 MICHIGAN - JANUARY 2, 1965
Most people thought St. John's didn't have a chance when it faced top-ranked Michigan and Cazzie Russell in the championship game of the annual Holiday Festival. Their thinking looked to be on the money when the Wolverines took a 68-52 lead with 9:35 remaining. No deficit is erased quickly but the Redmen kept chipping away and Kenny McIntyre hit four straight jumpers, the last of which tied the game at 70 with 2:25 to play. St. John's took the lead for good at 74-72 when Jerry Houston drove the baseline with 1:37 left. He added a free throw with 28 seconds remaining that offset a late tip-in by Michigan, the Wolverines' only field goal over the final 10 minutes.

Good thing you are not in charge. This team is more talented than last year's squad. We are rebounding much better with smaller guys, says allot about the forwards last season. We beat Gonzaga we will be ranked no doubt about it! If you have one foot in yesterday, and one in tomorrow you are pissing all over today!! Enjoy the moment! God bless all, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Who did we add to be more talented after losing two starters? You can say we are a year older and expect better things, but you can't say this team is more talented.

We are. A much more talented team this year, it's simple addition by subtraction! Jakar Sampson was a horrible stiff, and Sanchez was as well. They were nice kids and wish them well, and they would once in a blue make a nice play. They were both horrible at spacing, and never moved without the ball. So yes this team is much more talented

you can say the chemistry may be better this season, we will see. You cannot lose a guy who is on an NBA roster and another in the D-League without replacing them with more talent and say we are more talented. Geez.

Mods delete.

I think it's a huge win only because a loss would have been pretty devastating for the season.

All I can say is WTF !!!! U must really hate Lavin. We get a nice win against a good veteran team and u try to put a negative spin on things. Please crawl back into your hole !!!!!

Great Game I was there in person Brought back many good memories

If we shoot 50% from the floor, make our free throws, and play defense like we did in the second half of the Minny game, WE WILL BEAT GONZAGA !

Sampson is not on any nba roster, he was shipped to the D league, where he will never be heard from again. We are more talented. Last year Briscoe was not the top pg in the country, and not talented enough for kentucky, kid got a year older and better. Kentucky offered based on him being the number 1 pg talent wise. Now he did have another year of experience, but his talent level was raised.

Memories. I was at that game. Garden was alive and kicking.

I just want to see all of them go at it for a full game again. Avoid foul trouble, hit free throws and do it on the defensive end.

Was there too (as a freshman) -- the game I have the fondest memories of. Remember seeing #1-ranked Michigan players (Cazzie, Bill Buntin, Oliver Darden, et al.) walk onto the floor prior to the game -- they looked like beasts, more like football players than basketball players, especially along side the likes of Sonny Dove, Bobby Duerr, and Jerry Houston, and I remember thinking, Oh boy, are we in trouble. But our guys -- led by the incomparable Joe Lapchick -- took it to them, showed them what the Redmen were made of, and what St. John's basketball stood for in NYC, and I remember walking out of the old Garden on Cloud 9. No, make that Cloud 10 or 11.

Seriously, are some people totally incapable of having any enjoyment in life? This response has nothing to do with my original post about potentially being ranked. If you're this miserable about the team and can't even be happy about a win, then youre probably better off not even bothering with the team.

I did not say it was not a good win ....it was. BTW, we are also a veteran team playing on our home court. The point you missed re. my comment regarding a possible ranking is that our wins and ranking are rendered meaningful if it lands recruits. If we get ranked and get to dance yet miss all our targets the wizard will have a tough sell to keep his "vision" realistic and his job. You just cannot come up empty in two straight recruiting cycles and expect the status quo on the staff. Someone will be pushed out and barring a shake up in assistants, my guess would be a house cleaning. My view may change with some verbals and whether ADR gets cleared. Now I will go back into my hole.
