Gonzaga

Oh my god who the hell cares. We won a big game last night and today is thanksgiving, can the pessimism go away for one day please. There's a good chance we lose to Gonzaga so you guys can have your fill tomorrow night. Have a good day everyone

It's not pessimism, Jack. It's being balanced. Just like last week when you were proclaiming the program dead because we didn't land Briscoe. I just have a problem with bipolar fans. It was a nice win, and if we win our winnable games we will have a good season. It's nothing to be ecstatic about and nothing to complain about either. Just be realistic.

Lol, you are putting words into my mouth. all I said after the Briscoe thing was that I think Lavin needs to be gone after this season unless we make it to the sweet 16. I still feel that way. "Proclaiming the program dead"??? Just stop man. People are being realistic. They are being excited for our team cause we won a big game? Damn, somebody shoot them, god forbid we get excited.

Everyone is aware of our weaknesses. Maybe they don't want to discuss them right after our first big win in awhile. And on thanksgiving too.

It wasn't putting words in your mouth, it was paraphrasing your general reaction of doom. You did it last season when our team played poorly. Even if you are "Lol'ing" or "OMG'ing", sometimes people on here overreact after a nice win, and go off the deep end when we lose. Even if you say I am putting words in your mouth, your own reaction was so negative as to proclaim Lavin gone after this season, with losing Briscoe the catalyst for that reaction. Sweet 16???? Do you honestly believe this season would be a failure unless we make the sweet sixteen?? Meaning we would make the tourney for the second time in what, 14 seasons, and winning two games wouldn't be good enough for you? How many sweet sixteens have we made since 1986?

It's a long season. I won't go in the tank if they lose badly tonight, nor will I proclaim them a tourney team if they blow out the Zags. One thing for certain is tonight will be a very good test of how ready we are at this moment to play top flight competition.

Not to jump the gun, but would we crack the top 25 with a win? I've seen a bunch of ranked teams go down lately, so I'd think we'd pass a bunch, including Minnesota who got votes.

It would be great PR but unless it impresses some recruits the ranking does not change our uncertain future since the team will be gutted of talent. As I and others have stated, it is not about making the Dance this year but evaluating management for the basketball organization's future. This is a business and the staff will be evaluated on both past performance and future potential. If it appears that they were a failure last year as a team when we had the most talent in years and are being out worked on the recruiting front, whatever this team does this year will be moot.

Seriously, are some people totally incapable of having any enjoyment in life? This response has nothing to do with my original post about potentially being ranked. If you're this miserable about the team and can't even be happy about a win, then youre probably better off not even bothering with the team.

We will be in the top 25 if we win bc we will have a win over a top 40 Minnesota team and a top 10 gonzaga team....which would be great for the program....but I also share concern for the future the cupboard is very bare when we are talking 2015 incoming class ...so let's enjoy this now it can be years before we see this again

I think you are right, and we would certainly deserve to crack the top 25. These polls are subjective, and great programs get a lot more love in the polls than a downtrodden one. In any case, polls are meaningless right now. I'm just hoping for a strong performance. My biggest fear is that we are too thin up front to withstand foul trouble by Obekpa and Pointer.

Pangos for doubters has 29 assists and one turnover to date. He's probably not NBA guy, but give me heady college PG who orchestrates success anytime. Tough, tough game, but play a smart, avoid TOs, make FTs & a few threes, hope they are off & who knows.

Simply put, this will be a tall task for us, literally and figuratively. On a side note, two or our last three NCAA appearances were ended by Gonzaga (2000 & 2011). I'd really like to beat these guys. For those not fully familiar with their personnel, there are links below.

If I recall in 2000 we played them out west and we got into foul trouble as the refs were not letting us play big East style and called fouls on touches. Barkley got into problems and it hurt us big time even though the game went down to the wire. I often wonder if we had Colin charles, who was thrown off the team by jarvis, if it would have made a difference as we needed another guard in that game

Guys, I've said this previously and I may be wrong but I don't think that Obepka and Sheed are going anywhere after this year. Obepka still needs to develop a consistent shot from 10ft to 12ft away to play effectively in the NBA and Sheed also needs to be much more consistent with his outside shooting to go pro. Both will benefit immensely from one more year in college. The only reason why Jakarr is in the NBA is because the Sixers are the worst team in NBA history and he doesn't even play. he's inactive every night. Kentucky can beat the Sixers.

Looking forward to next year, if CO and Sheed stay, a backcourt of Sheed, Doughty, Balamou and Sampson or Carter or a guy like LoVett is not bad to go along with CO, ADR, Jones and a Freeman and Nicola Akele. This thing can be pieced together nicely if they stay.

Hope you are right, but doubt it. If either/both have a solid year, I think playing for dough is in the cards. Agree on NBA prognostication, but these kids are not logical & often get bad advice. Secondly, they may be willing to earn some money, especially Jordan, overseas for a year or so. I will assume the worst, enjoy them now & if they stay enjoy a big surprise.

Lastly, if Lavin departs, I doubt either would stay, just my gut feeling. We'll see. Beat the Zags!

It seems every thread on here devolves into something not related to the subject. I get it, as the lack of success has turned many of us pessimistic. That being said, I am excited about tonight's game. It will be a great barometer around how mature we are as a team. Playing an excellent, efficient team like Gonzaga would be tough for Kentucky. I think our frenetic defense will give us a shot. We need to shoot better from the outside and nail our free throws. If we lose, we were supposed to. if we win, we are pumped. if we lose a close one, we know we can hang.

I actually share both of your concerns about the future. However, I still don't see how that has anything to do with my original point, which was being ranked with this year's team. Can we not just enjoy that?

Sorry if this has been mentioned earlier, but I am going to the game with a few friends and we do not have tickets yet. The box office will be selling tickets I assume during the first game? If not, or if anyone knows a better way for tickets let me know.

Thanks

Yep you can buy tickets during the first game or on ticketmaster now using the code lastchance for 25 bucks each.

Keys to the game:
We need to take care of the ball.
We need to execute on offense.
We need to get out on their shooters.
And we need to limit their offensive rebounds.

But mostly we need to score at least one more point than they do.

I totally agree with your third point about getting out on their shooters. I we allow Gonzaga to many open looks they will bury them and in turn bury us. Agree with your other points also.

I think we also must shoot better from the 3pt line ourselves, or else, every three they hit we'll have to score twice to beat them. if they shoot 33% from 3pt land we have to shoot 50% to beat them. We also must hit our foul shots. I think we need to take the ball right at their big men and draw fouls to get them out of the game but, in turn, we have to hit out free throws.
