Gonzaga

My gut instinct is to complain about FT shooting, but we shot better than the Zags. Same with 3 point shooting. Bottom line, we got killed in the paint.

I hate blaming the refs, but this group sucked tonight. Your #1 job as a ref is to not decide the game with the whistle. They put Dom and Obekpa in awful foul situations early for chippies (CO's 2nd should have gone to Jones anyway). Seriously, you need to do research as a ref and you know the seere disadvantage you put SJU at by making a close call like that. They also called back-to-back travels on us in the first half. Who does that? There is a travel every possession.

Harrison's drive was an offensive foul...barely, but it was. But you don't make that call when a team is down three with the ball 40 feet from the basket! The kid flopped his ass off. You just don't make that call. These guys were garbage. How that guy missed the out of bounds with Greene...I have no idea. They were over our backs all night with one whistle.

Great effort by the team. This squad is much, much better than last season. Gonzaga would have beaten the 13-14 group by 20.

Is Jones in Lav's dog house? Before Chris got his fifth, could he have spotted him a few minutes?

Way back in the first half Jones had position over Konowski yet he didn't even leave his feet or put his ass into Konkowski. He deserved to stay on the bench. Remember our biggest complaint against Jones was hitting the boards.

Fair point, but I just thought we needed to let Chris sit a minute or so with the four fouls. You may be right though. He does not evidence much savy or aggressive play.

Great game, Johnnie's should be proud. Tenacious defense down the stretch with Harrison defending Sabonis and Green hitting clutch threes. Pointer hanging in the game and making great plays. He started it with the steal on the post feed and the coast to coast drive. Wonderful to see hesitation on the Zags when it got close. Wesley killed us. Can't ask for more than the 2 possessions to tie,
Lavin coaching his ass off and really engaged down the stretch.

No moral victories, but as a fan I really enjoyed watching the game. It had a tournament feel (post season, that is), there was some juice in the Garden, and they showed a lot of heart. Team should learn from this game - play to your strengths - defense first, and it was there all NIghT. Drive the lane (if we all only had $.05 each time we read that tonight). Only take the 3 when in rhythm after moving the ball (ball movement was excellent all night). We proved we can hang with just about anybody. As D'Angelo said, "We want to be taken seriously" - in that capacity, mission accomplished, IMHO.

Nice to get some love from Dakich.

Hey we held Gonzaga to 73 points , not bad since they were averaging 93 points, I believe. Didn't give up.

Clearly this season isn't going to lack any heart and hustle, and that is the only reason we were in this game. They were clearly the better team tonight. But like I have stated before, heart and hustle will win this team games and I can't ask for much more than that.

We were outsized by about 6 inches at multiple positions and we came back, gotta be proud of that. Imagine we had Keith Thomas this season? This would've been a much different game.

As do I (and I bet everyone else) - they were pretty dicey Wednesday night as well.

Another late comeback that falls short. It will be refreshing if we can go up on Syracuse early.

The real question is can we improve our zone offense. Enjoyed the game & salute the effort, but we just don't shoot well enough to beat the big boys, let alone on the road. Cuse will be a tough one. Before I die can we get a couple of shooters? :)

Better team won, but SJU competed. Not a bad tourney. Proud of effort.

Game was ours for the taking. Without restating the obvious, we gave them the game on the line. Also obvious is our lack of a pure point guard to direct the offense. The last two possessions by Jordan and Harrison were straight out of the school yard. Needed to just rotate the ball for an open three instead of foolish drives. As the season progresses we shall see if the Amar and ADR scholarships were a wasted effort. Stewart is a scholarship player and should have been in at the end for his 3 point abilities.

I appreciate the effort our guys gave tonight. They played with a lot of heart and energy. Simply stated, they want it.

The bottom line is.....shame on Steve Lavin for letting these four year guys go into their senior year with no depth in the front court.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Harrison's hard play. He guarded a 6'11 possible lottery pick for several minutes to close the game and gave up NOTHING. Jordan picked him up as well on some switches. Dee is a monster. He gave up over a half-foot to Sabonis, but fronted him textbook. There was always great support behind on help which was also textbook.

Jones offers us nothing if he is going to play like he's wearing a tampon. I'll go with Dee three to four inches shorter, knowing you will get max effort, solid boxouts, and better offense.

Pointer played extremely well....starting to become a theme. I love his game this season. This is the role he should have been playing last year and that is why it killed me to watch him do what he did. He is a weapon.

I am disappointed with the way they handled the zone for the first five minutes Obekpa fouled out. C'mon! You have four guards and a SF. How can a zone do that to you?

And we did learn against the zone, Pointer stationed on the foul line, was able to drive to the basket, resulting in their big men's fouls. Dakich kept on making this point. Not a bad idea even against a man defense in the future.

Dlo is a good leader. Imagine if we had an organized offense and an eligible 6foot eight with fair ability

This team played there asses off. We got killed inside all night with Karnowski, Wijlyter and Sabomis. To have a chance to tie at the after being down 15 was all you can ask for. This can be an NCAA Tournament team.

We have to make foul shots, not settle for so many three's and be more disciplined moving the ball instead of throwing it around the way we do sometimes.

Obepka, though improved, really still has little offensive game. Jordan is too undisciplined.

Our zone offense obviously has & will plague us all year.

You are like a broken record. This is a game thread. You've made your recruiting points very clear in every other thread you post in.

Guess what? We didn't lose this game due to size, okay? Harrison and Pointer played exceptionally well defensively to close the game. We lost this game because we couldn't attack the zone effectively for five minutes and fell too far behind. They only out-rebounded us by four. We got out-rebounded by much worse routinely last season with 6'9 Sampson 6'9 Sanchez 6'10 Obekpa, and 6'8 GG.

This 14-15 team is better. No ifs, ands, or buts.

How about these reminders (since the game came down to one possession with under 35 seconds remaining):

Myles Stewart missed an open three and then stared at it while Sabonis ran right past him and finished with an uncontested dunk (five point swing).

Jordan's moronic offensive goal tend on a ball that was already 75% down.

Ouch. That will be the last time either of those guys make that mistake (one would hope).

I like Stewart Marillac, he should play over Balamou. He looks like he can shoot.
